    Thank you so much for all this content Slade. I am getting ready to do a bunch of brake work on my 67 and 71 Super. Drum brakes are drum brakes and I've done a few on other vehicles, but your videos are great to prepare me for any little VW quirks I haven't seen before. Thank you!

    I enjoyed your video 👍
    One idea that works when installing new races is ever so slightly linishing down or even grinding down the outside of the OLD races to use instead of a socket to push in the new races. 👍

    Another great video Slades. I haven’t ever seen a set up like that where you have that 6mm hex to tighten that is some German engineering right there lol. I was told it was a 36mm that was for the axle nuts.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, they have that strange set up, with a 6 mm Allen head to lock it in place. There’s a 36 mm nut on the back for the rear drums. I wanted to make sure I show people that the driver side goes on the opposite direction.

    thanks for this vid i replace drums on my buggy wich is a 70 front beam same drums as yours , they came from Brazil ! i am an experienced tech at age 70 ,,,for some reason the wheel and bearing worked up a slack to dangerously make the wheel wobble ? caught it on time though thank god for that , seems like on these bugs front beam we almost have to kind of through away the book in a sense and tighten that spindle nut just a little tighter then i was thought in class years ago ,,,,,these vw seem to have a mind of their own LOL , just saying or maybe the hubs are not exactly to spec ? just saying maybe ? oh i forgot to say ,,,,before adjusting my wheel i did check the nut and it was tight ,so it did not loosen itself but the bearings did get loose ? headache LOL ,,,,,thanks god bless

    Slade, I am attempting to install the EMPI DISK brake conversion. I was able to get the races out of the old drum but they dont seem to go in well in the DISK rotor. Do you think its possible the races would be different sizes for that?

    My buggy has the original ball bearings , with the race pressed on the spindle . Can I get a newer style bearing like you have ?

  • @andrewhenrywhite6783
    @andrewhenrywhite6783 3 года назад +2

    Handy stuff! Don't be afraid to talk about the basics. Some people like me need to know what direction those races go in!
    Need a little help with bearings: I had to use a three-arm puller to get the remnants of a blown bearing off the spindle. Tried just sliding a new one on (A1 bearing) to feel how it would fit, and it's so tight it won't slide on. My instincts are against just hammering it on. Any recommendations?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 года назад +1

      I'm so sorry. I wasn't notified on this message. I just saw it while scrolling!
      Okay, I imagine you probably fixed this already. But if the spindle is that bad, I would put a new one on. Sounds like the shaft is shot. The re very cheap for these cars thankfully! I did a more recent video on drop spindle install. But the same process for a factory spindle.

    • @andrewhenrywhite6783
      @andrewhenrywhite6783 2 года назад

      @@SladesVWBeetle No worries brother - we're all in this together, and keeping these old girls on the road takes time.
      Finding the proper spindle for an early '68 seems impossible - everyone's selling drop spindles, or other years.

  • @nickel1008

    Is there a way to reuse my "old" races? They're not old, maybe a few months but I'm switching rotor to a different pattern and forgot to order new races with it. They are the same size and everything I just don't know how to remove the old races

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 года назад

      You’ll notice in the video I show how to remove the races. They’re not hard to get out. Technically you’re never supposed to use the races with a different bearing. If you’re staying with the same bearings you’re OK. And it depends how many miles you have put on them.

    • @nickel1008
      @nickel1008 3 года назад +1

      @@SladesVWBeetle yeah I'd keep the same bearings making sure not to mix them up, they've only had maybe 10k miles put on them

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 года назад +1

      Oh, I think I misunderstood you that was my fault. If you’re keeping same bearings you’re OK.
      But do make sure as you stated, to keep the bearings with a races, don’t mix them up.
      You’ll see in the video it was very easy to get the races out. You’ll see a little notch inside where you can put the screwdriver, or a punch and knock them right out. I show it pretty close up in the video.
