I was willed my Grammy's cast iron pan from the early 1900's. I was not a great cook, but the moment that pan came into my life and I used it for the first time, I swear, it was like all the spirits of my ancestors came out and gifted me their cooking talents because my cooking blossomed so much!
I want to first say that I love my wife. She is smart, funny, beautiful, and driven. She's an amazing mother to our 4 year old son. She is also the destroyer of all things cast iron. I can't tell you how many times I caught her with a scouring pad and trying to get the "black stuff" off. I'll forward this link to her, hopefully she won't see my comment. (In case she does, I love you, Sweetie!)
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love how you gave your wife the compliments first! 😁😂
@@brooklynhomesteader3721 Hi Justin, you know what to do in future, you clean the skillet yourself !!!🥴
@@jimflynn466 A simple and elegant solution for sure! 🙂
Best comment to a video so far!!!! Lol!!! Thank you for that laugh. Oh, and, if she IS reading this...you've got a keeper!!!!
The fact that most of your cast iron pots were gifted makes it all that much special. Meaningful gifts like these really do make the biggest difference in life
I'm a simple man. Simple Living Alaska uploads a video, I click it. No thinking involved. Excited to see what today's adventure is.
William Fleming thank you 😊
Just wanted to say that you can use some soap on the cast iron to clean it. back in the day soap contained lye, which is not common anymore, and that was the main chemical the stripped away the seasoning. interestingly lye and electrodes are used to clean and restore very old cast iron. so if youre using dawn or something like that its totally fine to use it and a lot less harmful on the seasoning than scrubbing too hard with a metal brush
That is completly true what you say. Ariel mentioned that they make soap themselves so i don't know if any lye is involved into that. Personally I prefer to not use soap when not needed but i do sometimes. Just some people take it that 'you can use soap' means you can just deal with it as normal dishes or even stick it in the dishwasher
I inherited my maternal Grandma’s cast iron skillet. It’s a 8” I believe. Mine is almost 100 years old, it is a thicker one more like the one he called the Birmingham. My Grandma was born in 1878 and she died when I was about 11 years old. She was my best friend, I spent a lot of time when I was a little girl because my Mama had 2 miscarriages and a stillbirth between Me and my Brother who was born when I was 10. Back then you spent time in the hospital, so I’d stay with Grandma. Her house burned down when I was about 7, we were picking thru the ashes and I found the cast iron skillet. It makes the absolute best southern cornbread. You get a nice outer crunchy crust.
Great video! I have a very old, small cast iron skillet that belonged to my mom- very sentimental. Everyone in my family has cooked with this particular skillet. My partner thought he would clean it up one day... Oh man I thought he ruined it! I was devastated and cried to my sisters (we all wanted this skillet when mom passed). It was rusty and stripped! Still extremely upset, I came home the next day to a smoked out house, smoke detector sitting unplugged. I have to admit I wasn't nice about the situation at all. On the third day, he brought me this shiny, like-new cast iron skillet and apologized saying he wanted to surprise me with it but it took longer than he thought. He endured my hysterics for a couple of days, still finished it and presented it to me like the shiny, loving gift it was! It humbled me and taught me a huge life lesson: A little patience, maintenance and care can reinvigorate, giving new life to such a sentimentally valuable item- whether it's an old skillet or an old relationship. Love you two!
This was inspiring, thank you. Exactly what I needed.
Someone threw 3 cast iron pans away at my apartment because they were rusty. Took me all of half a day to get them back to useable. I hope someone does that again.
Woo hoo. Someone's trash is another's treasure!! They were meant for you!!
I have a castiron cornbread pan that I got the same way. It's the one that looks like corn.
Not quite the same thing but this reminds me of finding a crockpot at a flea market for all of $1 in New York City. Someone was too lazy to clean it after cooking in it. It made me very happy indeed! 😊
@@denagarcia6628 Me too! It was my grandmother's. Tough to clean.
I've found two dutch ovens thrown out ... My win! ❤️✌️
My Lodge 10" frypan is my "If you can only have one pan to cook with forever" choice.
The only thing I do different is I turn mine upside down in the oven to reduce the oil pooling in the bottom. I have to say that the more I watch y'alls videos, the more impressed I am by your knowledge and abilities. Keep the videos coming!
We have a cast iron pan that we call “Granny’s Pan”! We got the pan when my husband’s Granny passed away & I think of her every time we use it. The pan is actually Granny’s mother’s pan so it is older than me & my husband but it is the best pan we have & the easiest to clean.
After getting Granny’s Pan, we expanded our cast iron collection & had to build a special cabinet to hold them all.
Thank you for your videos! I enjoy watching them. ☺️
"Found a 8 inch Griswold skillett..." Awesome find!!!
Hot tip from my southern Grandmother... when your eggs or anything you're cooking sticks to the pan, remove the pan from the heat and let it sit a minute. Works every time to allow the food to release itself from the bottom.
Cast iron is seriously the way to do... the original non stick and almost indestructible. I’ve got a griddle/grill, a large 12” pan, and a DO... I use them for almost everything. It cooks better than anything else. I love my CI!!
Edit to add: I wash my CI with soap all the time... like almost every time I use them... just don’t soak them and it’s fine... a quick wash with hot water and soap, rinse well... dry very well and oil before putting it away. I’ve used CI all my life and haven’t had any issues with it.
Your Griswold pan is a treasure, and really sought after by collectors. PS the Number 6 Griswold is the perfect size pan for Cornbread for two.
My signature dish is jalapeno cornbread for the potlucks. I have to do 2 pans! It is always a good feeling when the is no leftovers.
I would love a griswold!
I inherited my mother's. I ate a lot of cornbread and other goodies cooked in that pan while growing up. Yes, I still use the frying pan
Came across a Griswold 8 skillet for free. I restored it and love it
@@truneilson no it is not recommended. Fire, or wire wheels or sandblasting are considered destructive methods in most reputable cast iron collector groups/forums, and are definitely not recommended. (And will get you booted out of said groups if you even recommend those methods to anyone) Not only that, but what could be a collectible and valuable piece just had its value severely diminished.
Soaking them in a lye bath, or using yellow-capped oven cleaner IS a recommended and safe method to strip old seasoning.
The English muffins straight up blew my mind, I didn’t realize thats how there were made...all looks so good👏🏽
You can make all breads homemade. I made bagels the other day- it’s so fun to learn how to do these things from scratch! ❤️❤️
I clean my cast iron with a little water and kosher salt when food needs removed. I've never used soap. I also coat it with a little oil....wipe any excess after cools. I call my Griswold cast iron skillet "black beauty". Don't use it much anymore...but wouldn't part with it...Cindy
I have an assortment of cast iron - seasoned and enamels - some over 100 years old, others only months old. All are great to cook on and will last a dozen lifetimes if well cared for. You don't have to pay a fortune for quality cast iron cooking.
I know it’s been said before but you need to create a cookbook!
I only cook with cast iron pans. Like you, I have my 2 go to pans. One point if I may....never run a hot cast iron pan under cold water, it will crack it. Also Griswold pans are treasured....nice find, Wagner pans are another collector piece.
Exactly! I was taught that you never put water into cast iron ever, as you are removing the seasoning which builds up with use and this what makes it cook as it does, Love the things you and your wife do, but never, ever put water on cast iron, ever! !You clean them by simply wiping them out after use and wipe the inside of them with your seasoning oil of choice!
In our home step one to cooking a steak in the cast iron pan is removing the smoke defector from ceiling 😄 Thank you for the tips, many noted!
Yes. I do the same when seasoning a new or old re-seasoning of cast iron or carbon steel pans. I don't remove the smoke alarm, instead I open doors and windows and turn on
every fan in the house.
I was waiting for something like this before I ruin my new cast iron pans, thank you so much! 👍
Cant beat this for an instructional video
Very well explained Eric but today we missed Ariel very much.God bless you both.
Why wait when the internet is full of this info?
Don't ever throw cast iron away cause you think you ruined it. It's extremely hard to ruin cast iron to the point of no return. There really easy to restore.
If you need to clean the crud off an old pan, I found that running it through a cycle in a self cleaning oven works great. Anything stuck on the pan turns to a fine powder and the pan ends up a bare metal gray.
We gave all of our cast iron to our daughter because we are getting older and they are too heavy. I miss them. :-)
I've never felt confident cleaning a cast iron skillet. This video helps a lot, Thank you!
Me too. I tried seasoning an old cast iron pan I was gifted this summer, but didn't repeat the process enough, I guess. Rust or iron or something made me sick after eating the food I made. Maybe I'll do it your way and try again. I think I used soap.
I feel the same way. I started to call my mother and ask her how to season them but couldn't....I buried her 5 months ago today. I did bring her cast iron home with me but I need to be reminded how to season and clean them. Thank you for sharing this video.
@@melissamason8 sorry for your loss. I lost my Mam last April, it's tough. I have so many questions that I need her to answer like she always did, but i have to stop and think and realise, she's not there anymore at least not in person, but always in spirit. God bless you Melissa, she is with you.
Cast iron people do not recommend removing seasoning in a fire as you don't control how hot it gets and you can warp the cooking surface, just heat in your owen (with windows open).
My husband worked at the University of Fairbanks for 2 years. We traveled all over Alaska, which is the most beautiful and stunning state in the USA! Loved every second of it.
Thank you, Eric! That was a really great lesson on cleaning and seasoning cast iron. You and Ariel really know the "why" behind everything you do, and you explain it so clearly and well. You were both really meant live in Alaska and become our teachers. I'm so happy you have each other!
I had a hugh collection of cast iron and when we downsized our 5 children were thrilled. They got to choose the ones they wanted. I kept my 10", 8", 6qt Dutch oven. Don't let anyone tell you not to cook acidic foods in them, you just have to clean good and oil heat and ready for next time. Only thing I use to season with is lard. I get the good lard from our butcher shop now but used to do my own.
Hey now, feel free to share that homemade English muffin recipe, yeah.
I can remember my daddy putting pans in the wood stove when I was really young, now i know why!
IMPRESSIVE - Love how you clean them. This is much needed video and you did an excellent job.
Great vlog! You guys really put out great material and enjoy them all, especially the latest cabin and your building projects!
Good job on the cast iron expose! I would add that it's important not to hit hot cast iron with cold water. I did it for years with no incident and everybody said "you shouldn't do that it can crack them" and I scoffed. Until it finally happened, and I busted a pan lol. My mom has cast iron that is probably almost a hundred years old, and it still sits on the stove and is used daily. My mom would bring our cast iron with us when we went camping about 1x yearly and not only did we cook in them while camping but she also put them into the fire to burn off the carbon that accumulated throughout the year. Hers and mine still always have bumpy coat around the outside.
Love, love this video ! Super informative, much needed too. Blessings!!! 👍🏼💜
That's some good info right there! Thanks for posting it. I'm sure it's going to help a lot of people out there!
That was a great tutorial. I always love watching you guy’s cook because it always looks so good. Thanks for the video. Sending love from VA and stay safe.❤️❤️
300 +K. Awesome for you!!! You know we all love you and are thankful for you sharing your lives with us. Hugs to the dogs and gorgeous Kitty!
I love cooking in my cast iron. It's perfect. Love the video!

I've always wanted to know how cast iron pans work, so thank you. I'm always so happy when I see a new video from you guys.
First time I’ve felt like I could tackle this process with my old cast iron pan. Thank you.
Great information! I made a 1/2 recipe of a cake in my 10" last week! I just love that non-stick element!
I could watch you cook all day. Good info on the cast iron. I need to reseason some of mine.😁👍
This is such a great video!! I really appreciate that you took the time to make it. I have some very old cast iron pots and this was so helpful!!
Another great video! We love our cast-iron pans. I clean them and season them the same way as you and they truely are the best pans for any meal. Also, your meals looked delicious!
Great instruction! Gives me more confidence to use my cast iron much more often. Thanks.
That was a really good tutorial on cast iron. I have started collecting and using on a daily basis. Has taken some getting use to but I really like the stuff. THANKS
That was one of the best videos I have seen on cast iron thank you
Congratulations on 305k! A big milestone, you two deserve it, stay safe out there!
This is the best video on cast iron i have seen. Tanks you.
Yay one of the first to see your upload! I love you guys and my simple living spirit lives vicariously through you... ☮️ Peace and love 💜 from Kimberly in South Dakota 💙❤️
Great timing! I was just lookin king to relax my pots. Thanks so much
Well done video, y'all. Quite informative without a ton of extra stuff a lot of folks like to add in. Plus, I did not know to do the oil thing over and over when first seasoning so thank so much for that!
I used to subscribe to the "never wash with soapy water" theory for years, but I now wash them in soap and never have an issue. It's a long battled debate amongst cast iron cookers lol.
It was something about what soap used to be made out of. It would strip off the seasoning, but soap doesn't contain the chemical anymore... or something like that anyway.
I don't use soap, even though I know it probably fine.
@@DevinAK49 I believe the compound you are describing is sodium hydroxide, or lye. You are correct, most dish detergents do not contain lye. I clean my cast iron with dish detergent and never worry about it stripping away the polymerized oils. I think every user of cast iron somehow falls into his or her own routine and cleans and seasons cast iron a different way.
It's a modern fallacy based off of a past fact!
@@bornraisedpnw6477 yes, thank you. I was too lazy to Google at the time. Haha
Very interesting. That is one reason why I shied away from using cast iron. I will use mild soap to clean it.
Great collection of pans! Thanks for the cleaning tips!
Oh! You are brilliant!! In the wood stove they go!
Love it!
Between you guys and Kent & Shan Rollins I feel well seasoned. Thanks for sharing.
A great teaching video. Reading directions is good but having the real time visuals to see what really happens and how to do it is wonderful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Excellent demo and food looked SO good! ♥️❣️♥️
I have always struggled with how cast iron skillets worked! That you for breaking it down for me! I think I am ready to give it another try!
Excellent tutorial...I just purchased my first cast iron pan and I love it! You gave some great information on how to maintain the pan. Cheers!
Thank you so much for this simple video. Really needed this.
I absolutely love my cast iron skillets too!! Mine were my dads and he gave them to me 😊. I love owning them!!
Happy that Griswald found a good home with you two
You just made me hungry 😋 😃😃😀 thanks for the video ! Stay safe and healthy
Love you two! I needed this information. I’ve been hanging on to my Grandmother’s old cast iron skillet for over 50 years now. Guess it’s time to get serious and clean it up and use it! Thanks. Hugs and kisses to the fur babies❤️
That was fantastic! I was just saying we needed to get new non-stick pans but I’m going to clean up my old hand me down cast iron!! It’s time! Thanks for the inspiration! (And I’m using your calendar to mark when to plant my seeds-just did peppers this am! Can’t wait to see more garden videos from you two!) much love from Indiana zone 5b
Thank you guys I love you and I enjoy watching your videos as always and you are always cooking delicious food .
I hope you are well , happy and have a wonderful weekend ,
God bless you all .
Thank you for making this video! Now you’ve convinced me I have to give cast iron a try.
I love my cast irons. I ditched my other cookware and use these exclusively.
Love these tips on seasoning and cleaning cast iron. I've used it for years, but never had it fully seasoned or known how to get rid of the burnt on seasoning. Thank you! Love your cooking videos, too and canning, fermenting, etc. Awesome!
I was just wondering about this very thing! Y’all read my mind, also I just love watching you guys! God bless and stay warm and safe! ❤️
Very well explained Eric, we missed Ariel today. God bless you both.Very hard working both of you 💐 💐
That was interesting, thank you. I enjoy your channel ☺️ Happy Holidays
This is one of my favorite videos you have made - makes cast iron simple!
AWESOME video! this explains why my cast iron skillet was sticking. I knew it had to be seasoned, but wasn't aware that it needed done multiple times before it was ready! I only seasoned mine one time, when I bought it new, & then tried to cook with it. Having watched this video, I'm going to dig it out of the cupboard, re-season it, & try using it again. THANKS for sharing this video with us!
The beef stroganoff looks delicious! My mouth was watering as you were serving it up. Nom nom!
Nice to see someone who knows how to use and care for cast iron, the old stuff is the best....
Griswold's are nice, and to me it's fun finding old one's and re-seasoning them!
Great video about the use and care of cast iron cookware by someone who really uses their cast iron everyday!
You found a true treasure in the Griswold cast iron pan. Highly sought after in the world of really good cast iron.
Awesome Video!! Those are old school cast iron skillets! Learned a lot! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you...I have been doing this wrong for years..so simple...you guys are awesome!
I have a Griswold no 8 that is over 150 years old and this inspired me to pull it out clean it and start to use it.
Everything you guys cook always looks so darn delicious..
You two always make me hungry ! The cast iron pans are the best.
This is the best, easiest, and most straight forward video showing cast iron care. This will be a great reference. Thanks.
What a great video.....you both are natural educators. I have a cast iron skillet that was my darling Grandmother's. It is a treasure.
Thank you, stay safe and well.
I have worked with cast iron for years and this hands down the best video and information I have ever found and it has filled some major holes in my reseason knowledge. Thanks so much!
We still have our Dutch Oven from my GG Grandfather Samuel and his wife Sarah. Tradition had it they purchased in Missouri shortly after their marriage in Missouri in 1849, traveled to California (as part of Clark-Skidmore Company. in 1852) , crossing the Senora Pass, settled in Senora County California. We still use it and it works wonderfully! about 170 years old. Show me a Teflon pan that would still be functional after 170 years.
Really helpful video thanks! Last time I seasoned my pan the seasoning blistered off soon after and it's been waiting for me to give it another go. Now I'm ready!
That stroganoff looks amazing. I'm going to have to try your recipe! Those homemade noodles 😍
Thanks for the instructive video, it was well laid out and presented - kudos. As an aside, we keep all the paper towels used to absorb any kitchen grease or oil for fire starter. Stay well folks.
I just started using cast iron and I have been cleaning and caring for my pan the exact same way. Glad to know that I’m doing it right.
Great video.I have been doing this all wrong and now thanks to you my pans will be amazing.
Thanks for the information......I will get to work on my cast iron pans and make sure they are all up to date!
Just found a great buy on an old Lodge skillet. It definitely needed to be reseasoned and I remembered your video on that process. So appreciative you did this for me to follow. My can't iron skillets that my mom had are so very well seasoned I love them. Thanks again.
Would have I loved to have sat down for that meal it looked delicious. Thanks for the cast iron seasoning tips.
