I met Ms. Bacall at a book signing when her autobiography came out. I had my camera with me, +security tried to take it. She looked at security and said "Oh for go## sake let that child take 2 photos" She then looked at me and asked" How would you like me to pose?" What a classy lady! Thank you Ms. Bacall for a great moment! And some great movies!

I also think Bacall had a truly unique look and was a gorgeous woman. Gorgeous figure. Her hair was incredible. And she did her own hair in her first movie which was with Humphrey Bogart! I didn’t realize she loved Bette Davis so much. It’s hard not to. Today there is no one of this era for the upcoming actors to look up to that will be popular or even alive anymore. Sad state of what Hollywood has turned out to be now. Gone are the class acts. Just a few left like Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange, but we don’t see them much in anything anymore.

Davis was perfection in All About Eve. It's hard to imagine anyone else doing it. Bacall is great, but she has a hardness about her. I don't imagine she could be as vulnerable in that role as Davis, and a subtle vulnerability is crucial to that part. It would have been fascinating to see Bacall attempt it though.

Bacall won the Tony, made magazine covers & was toast of Broadway for Applause, reads like you've never seen her Oscar nominated performance as Streisand's Mom, she softened that "hardness". Which, when she was young, her director called insolence & how she could go toe to toe with Bogart. Bacall was young widow with young children, survived decades of Hollywood & Broadway stardom, you don't do that by being a softie, also reads like you don't know much about Bette Davis' career, either. Bacall was NYC girl, Davis New Englander, they don't breed softies in either of those places.

I don’t think Bacall was anything like her heroine Davis but she had elements in common - particularly a unique timbre of voice, explicit diction and a totally memorable sound. Because films are so visual, we often forget how extraordinarily unique some of the iconic stars sound - Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, so many of them have voices that are memorable, not just in diction and delivery but in tone.

I knew she liked Bette but I didn’t think it was really in a true fan girl way 😍 the way she talked about the roles she played, Bette’s beauty, (for real she’s really gorgeous, hot) how she had a crush on her, she even mentioned some titles of her movies, and how she put an ad for job in the newspaper. She’s a true fan and not just trying to be polite. 🥰

My daughter Madeline was born on Bette Davis' birthday....( April 5th )
And I gotta say from what I know about Bette Davis , they are so much alike ! ( my daughter appears confident , she has the ability to make a person cry with just words...
When she loves you she really loves you, and when she judges you... you're done )
I adore every film she's ever made , and I loved the way she could tear you apart ,or make you fall apart in tears, I've never had that , but my daughter does, and she's 22 , determined , and a pain in the ass...love it!

It is sad to hear industry insiders describe Bacall as mean to everyone. I doubt these performers start out that way. "When I know I'm right, I don't back down" turns into "I'm always right" as they age. There is an interesting clip of Dick Cavett artfully asking her about her bad reputation and her very vague response.

Had a week catering to Ms.Bacall's whims at the Watergate Hotel in the 70s. She was rude and demanding and treated my staff like they were dirt under her feet. She was perfectly charming with her peers, tho'. Guess that means that she was a good actress. However, a less than admirable human being.

All About Eve: A great film, incomparable, magnificent, yet very sexist too. Like another of Bette's films, June Bride, it reduces the female. She cannot be completed without a man and her career is a minor consideration, an amusement for her earliest years only, something she should abandon once she reaches maturity. That ideology was of its time and the films are great enough to be worth all the plaudits they receive to this day, but when we watch them, we should never lose sight of the post World War II (1948 & 1950) propaganda in them. They are part of the design to shove women back into the kitchens and laundries. For my part, I think Margot would have been better off letting Eve have Bill Sampson and Linda should have pitched her boyfriend down the stairs instead of carrying the suitcases for him. Please note that it is worth pointing out that I am certainly not a man-hating feminist. I am a man myself and a lot of feminists do not like me.

Daniel Hammond - Funny Daniel, as I read your post, I rather liked what you had to say. I'm a feminist; however, I take pride in labelling myself as more of a humanist. I usually take exception to the man bashing, or any gender bashing, that my fellow feminists indulge in. Why indulge in a hate mongering sport that only promotes hate and misunderstanding? Anyway, I liked your comments. It's nice to see a man admire strong women like Bacall and Davis.

And it continues till this day and age. Just think of the finale of Friends, where Rachel, having finally achieved career success, chucks it all to settle for a three time divorcee because isn't that what all women should do? Hollywood is the most misogynistic backward place on earth. What do you expect when it's run by the Harvey Weinsteins of the world.
