I was 15 years old at the time. I loved the song then and still do. I don’t call those types of songs as granny music. I always took it happy music. That’s what I always liked about the Beatles. The different styles of songs.
When I first heard it as a kid, I thought it was hilarious - I didn't understand the more onerous overtones. I think the animosity came from them from having to do it a zillion times, and it didn't really need to be done so many times.
Useless video, nothing new. Granted Ringo and the others were nerved from too many repetitions, but objectively the song is good and catchy, not the best, not the worst ... no reason for hate, so what?
"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is a great pop art song. It is melodic, quirky, tongue in cheek, cartoonish music. Not based upon rock and roll. The 60's art movement included Pop Art artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns. It was an art movement, just like Expressionism, Minimalism, Cubism, etc. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" fits very well in the category of Pop Art music, like it or not. The TV show "Batman" from the 1960s may also fit in the Pop Art genre.
It's a great song. Typical of Paul's eclectic nature. You couldn't box him into rock n' roll only. He was also starting to fly as a producer and not just a songwriter and performer. I can understand why Ringo and George found it hard to get through. It's intricate and demanded quite a bit. Also, the music hall vibe of it didn't appeal to them very much. But it's very well produced, including the killer bassline on the Ric.
Its why they had a wide appeal. The cartoonishness attracted kids. The tv cartoon, movie cartoon, etc... I was 11.. All together now took the edge off of Do it in the road and Skelter.. Might not have been as popular without us youngsters buying into the walrus outfits.
Scottish lady if you're sick of the negative comments around Maxwell's silver hammer that's your problem Not the negative comments themselves People don't like the People don't like the song You don't like the people don't like the song that your problem Why don't you move along Cause that's where the problem really is You Move along Scottish lady
Everyone is allowed to dislike a song or two, even if it's from their favourite artist, hell, how many songs that have been disliked by artists or their managers/labels have gone on to be hits !!! You don't know if you don't try 😊
It's a fun song they just had bad memories about recording it Paul was not the most popular band mate at the end so they ragged on him the worst sings are on the White Album and most were Johns at least Maxwell's Silver Hammer was a song unlike Revolution 9 pretentious rubbish that everyone skips and only liars say they repeat play
Maxwell's Silver Hammer has a brilliant theme, hello Dexter, but boy, does the song suck. Goes for a lot they recorded in 1969. Everybody is always so in awe of the album Abbey Road, but it has a lot of weak spots imho, namely Maxwell, Octopus's Garden and the whole of side 2 from Sun King on. Lennon was right, the potpourri idea was very bad. And before that was the album Yellow Submarine and after that Let It Be, a mixture of their best and their worst songs. Not a great period for The Beatles. Give me the White Album, Sgt. Peppers and Revolver (UK version) any time (at all). But hey, the worst of The Beatles is still better than the output of 99% of other musicians.
You never actually get to listen to this song all hype typical American crap surprised she didn't manage to get a couple of adverts in for things that people cannot afford and do not need
These AI narrations are so dreadful.

I am sick of the negative comments on "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." Almost 50 years ago. Move along.

... and I confess, I still enjoy it!

@luvmyrecords I guess we should move along from the good stuff as well.

It always reminded me of Octopuses' Garden. Same exact pop feel.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer would have been one of the best songs on The White Album
Everyone is allowed to dislike a song or two, even if it's from their favourite artist, hell, how many songs that have been disliked by artists or their managers/labels have gone on to be hits !!!
You don't know if you don't try 😊
The only two songs I immediately skip are Revolution 9 and Wild Honey Pie. Blech

Maxwell was a real banger LMAO!!

That song is considered worst when dreck like "Honey Pie" and "Why Don't We Do it in the Road" exist?
In the road is good, although short with silly lyrics.
Stupid - AI trying to create dissent out of thin air - click bait!
Don’t Pass Me By almost ruins TWA for me. What a piece of shit.
I have every album they made but think the white album is shit.
it was garbage, just like yellow submarine and octopuses garden there were others too...every song cant be a gem
Include Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da with those, please!
The best garbage I ever heard.
Yes, isn't it funny how "Yellow Submarine" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" both reached no. 1 on the charts..
