A classic Intercity Train! NSW Trainlink V set review

- NOTE: This review was filmed across several journeys between late January and June 2021. Please follow the current health advice, and don't try out this train unless its an essential journey right now.
After a busy month or so, I decided it was time to finish editing a review I've been planning to put out for ages, taking a look at the V set, the longest serving type at NSW Trainlink. With the first versions entering service over 50 years ago, the intercity train design is very well known across Greater Sydney and these trains have served well, but their replacements are nearing.
So, with the Maryiung trains (AKA the D set), undergoing final testing, I thought it was time to check out the V sets in a little more detail and do a review (also, I had footage lying around for them). Come and join me for the journey!

Gotta love the V sets! They are the epitome of public transport luxury here in NSW lol.
It's a testament to how modern these trains were at their introduction. They certainly don't look new now, but they don't look outdated. I'll quote my brother in law when he came to visit from Canada a couple of years ago. On the way down from Gosford to Sydney, we caught a V-set. On the way back, we got an Oscar. He said to me "Oh, how come we don't get that luxury train like the way down?". He certainly didn't see the V-set as old and crusty and it was interesting to get an outsider's perspective (Given I'm absolutely biased myself). It was music to my ears!
They are certainly a good bit of kit, and have done a fine job keeping the intercity network moving. Various refreshes have certainly helped them feel younger than their years, but there are now many safety features, and accessibility infrastructure needs that are difficult (or cost-prohibitive) to retrofit into a vehicle of this age. I certainly enjoy catching the V sets, but I am excited to give the next generation rollingstock (the Mariyung) a go when it's ready for us to catch!
The v sets have served NSW exceptionally well. They were comfortable and advanced for their time.
Absolutely, at launch, they were a class above anything else on the network!
The V sets have held up very well, but 50 years is a long time. Today's trains are quieter, more efficient and have features that make journeys easier and safer like destination signs, CCTV, automatic doors, internal information displays, and importantly, improved wheelchair access. They are still a great train, but I am keen to try out the new generation of rollingstock when it enters service.
Thanks for the memories I drove those v set for years good train
Definitely a good bit of kit, they have lasted well but fall short when it comes to accessiblity and safety gear that customers nees and expect.
Caught countless V sets from Woy Woy to the city .... whats kinda forgotten when they talk about the new D set... is when you're daily commute is over an hour in a train... then comfort i.e think padded seats were you face the direction the train is heading...
V sets are simply the most comfortable commute train I have ever traveled in .. they may not have the bells and whistle's of the newer trains but by heavens they are by light years the most comfortable...
I definitely agree that directional seating makes a big difference, but I've always found the bar in between the seats on the V sets can get annoying after a while. It's not too bad on a short journey, but after an hour or so, it becomes noticeable
@@TalkingPlanning I'm ok with the bar between the seats, and if someone is sitting next to me, it's most welcome. What I probably dislike about the V-sets the most is they are now very noisy - or at least some of the motor cars are. I don't know if it's the motor for the air-con or the engine of the train itself, but I now avoid motor cars for this reason. They didn't used to be like this. I have memories traveling to and from the Blue Mountains in the early 90s, and the carriages were ultra quiet, to the point where you could hear that familiar V-set moan.
First! I love the V set, best NSW train ever. I knew that this was coming as well. Great video mate!
Cheers! Initially I was hoping to look at the D set and V set around similar times, but thanks to the last few months, i thought let's focus less on order and more on just putting out good videos.
3:05 And the old doors closing annoucement lives on!!!
Yes! It's a classic sound right?
@@TalkingPlanning yea I still remember the days when M sets and H sets had them, and since these sets have external speakers (no longer utilised now for some reason) it made the announcement so angry haha
@@TalkingPlanning ruclips.net/video/zRH_OQ3n68s/видео.html here's an example I found, both the announcement and the doors closing speed were much more aggressive!
Yes I know that
i filmed an rare sighting of a NSW Trainlink V set on the T3 Bankstown line a few months ago
Nice score! It's always interesting to see Trains, trams, buses and ferries in unexpected locations.
V sets are my 2nd favourite train, but my favourite is the Tangara ex.G sets, because of the nice motor sound and flippable seats with headrests
The Ex-G sets are definitely comfy, and the V sets aren't too bad either, but a few modern features would be nice to see.
I used to catch G sets twice a day more than a decade ago. Their aircon was way over the top, especially in the downstairs. My colleagues would often wonder why I had a jacket with me in the middle of summer. It's because of those damn trains!
Some of the carriages used on The Overland are from 1952, slightly older than the Harris/H carriages.
Interesting, although I would argue it's quite a different use case compared to suburban or intercity commuter travel - so a little less wear and tear, and more flexibility with maintenance schedules.
The livery that is on the V sets now is called Hamburger Livery
My favourite trains by far.
They are pretty cool, but accessibility and modern amenities I'm sure would be welcomed by many passengers.
You forgot the blue goose livery and that grey and yellow livery
golden goose
I didn't forget them, I just couldn't get photos which weren't subject to copyright!
@@TalkingPlanning oh ok fair enough that sucks but great video
@@Class_38 that’s it, it was the worst livery in my opinion so plain so boring
@@belchy94 The Golden goose?
Bush Plum. The best train colour scheme ever.
It does look nice. Imagine if in an alternative universe, the bush plum made its way onto the K sets and the Tangaras - would have been an interesting sight!
its funny how V sets used to have economy and first class until 1974!
I'd guess the economy class seats would be on the bottom floor and first on the top
I didn't blink when the silver suburbans were withdrawn, but my heart will hurt when the interurbans are taken away
Incredible video! Just one thing to keep in mind is that the Comeng train in Melbourne is pronounced with a J at the end, not a hard G. So it's pronounced like "Comenj". Also, the non-reversible seat thing is confirmed, it is no longer just a rumor. I've never been on a V Set before, but I hope I do before they are retired and replaced by the Mariyung D Sets.
Cheers! I'll stick to my tradition of pronouncing things wrong in Victoria 😂... for better or for worse.
I haven't had the chance to see the D set Trains in the flesh, but hopefully I do soon. Hope you get to try out the V sets, they are a nice train but 50 years of technology improvements make a big difference.
NSW is the only place with reversible seating. It will now conform to a way of travel everyone else is used to.
Not quite the only place, but agreed it is rare - I remember that Queensland's ICE sets had a pedal under the seat that allowed them to be turned around, but I think they may have fixed them in place?
I prefer the reliable V sets over the new trains. I wonder if the new trains imported from overseas will last as long as our Aussie made ones, I bet they won't.
Don't get me wrong, I love the V sets but technology, safety, accessibility and design has come a long way in the past 50 years. The V sets have served us very well, but excited to see the new generation of intercity rollingstock.
@@TalkingPlanning I will never like the new trains. If they were made here in Australia it would be a different story. The age of the older rolling stock shows how good we are at building quality trains.
I miss riding on the old U sets.
The first U set carriage I saw was at an Easter Show exhibit in the mid-50's. Striking then and did a good job in service. The V sets were more than worthy successors to them, in many ways the best multiple unit trains in NSW.
i heard a long time ago some v sets were converted to suburban v sets that had desto boards
I've seen the photos before but can't recall where. Definitely an interesting sight to see.
@@TalkingPlanning it was thanks to the internet and roblox's mini sydney trains 2 that i found out about them
They weren't converted to suburban use most DCM cars and a few DIMs had destos fitted but quickly removed there's a pic of a two car V set with a desto which is probably why people call them suburban V sets
Best train on the network today
They are cool old trains, but the safety upgrades modern designs can offer, and improved accessibility of more modern designs is important too.
@@TalkingPlanning differently I agree with you
Hey Talking, What V set was this filmed on?
This was on a variety of different V sets, can't remember all of them off the top of my head, but I know i caught V11 and V46 on one of the trips.
@@TalkingPlanning Oh Thanks!
Why was there a $20 bill over the alarm?
Because it said "Penalty for misuse $20". Of course that figure is outdated and likely more nowadays, probably wouldn't want to find out exactly how much!
Got to it first! I just had a good laugh at it- I think some of the Endeavours have the same alarm fascia plate. I'm sure it's gone up a lot more since then
I love the V set. Such an iconic train. The seats are also like premium economy, compared to the OSCARs. I am looking forward to the D set entry into service, however, I am not looking forward to the fixed seating, especially the half-facing-frontwards and half-facing-backwards layout. They could have at least done the each-row-facing-each-other (if that makes sense) layout, like what you did at 11:17.
Yeah, I must say the fixed seating will be a bit of a fly in the ointment, but looking forward to trying them out to see what difference it makes in practice.
Why am I having the feeling of being on them
You need to check to see what Sydney trains you have already reviewed and which one you haven’t reviewed
Looks like you might need to rewatch the end of the video!
Interesting you did not review the disgusting toilets on these trains. Urine on seats, no handrails and closet sized. Not good for a train that takes 2 and a half hours to get you to your destination. Every woman I know who travels this journey only uses the toilet if they are beyond desperate, rather we don''t drink anything from one hour before boarding or during the journey.
I can almost smell the breaks just from watching this ahhhhh it's such a nice smell I'll miss the Vs when they go they've always been there and it'll be weird when they're gone
I think my lungs might pass up on that... But I think the V set have a special place in the hearts of many enthusiasts. I'm excited to see the next generation of rollingstock enter service though, even if I will miss the V sets!
