  • So many of our efforts as cannabis cultivators are intended to improve the interaction between the plant and soil. And yet, most of us know very little about how plants and microbes really communicate and exchange nutrition and other resources. On this episode of Shaping Fire, host Shango Los talks with plant biologist Sarah Lane about these extraordinary secretions of plants known as exudates, their essential roles in the rhizosphere, challenges with the 24 hour light cycle, exudates in soilless substrate, and the inadequacy of replacing exudates with molasses when feeding microbe life in the soil.

Thanks for another great show!! I am a believer in at least 4 hours of darkness. My reasoning is that during darkness is when the growth hormones are pushing into the tips of the plant throughout. This is why I have always taking clones first thing in morning. Does it matter... not sure, but I do think there is some difference transferring during the dark period. I have tried all ways of growing and cutting clones with different light durations, different color spectrums and distances and I found most success with downtime. Thanks, the fun is in the experimentation and the chase for puzzle pieces! Keep up the great work 👍

Just look at those Ice petals that form high in the cold mountains .they come from the rootzone .theyre a clue as to whats going on in the rootzone as far as respiration goes.

DO ROOT EXUDATES STILL HAPPEN IN HYDROPHONICS???

They happen but they get washed away due to the water current. It's like trying to yell across a field in a windy snowstorm. The message just doesn't get through.
