Back in the day they used gun powder and mix it with the alcohol and ignite it to proof that the alcohol content was high enough and that it wasn’t water down.
But usually you take the proof amount and cut it in half to get your abv or alcohol by volume.
If something is 10% abv then that mean only 10% out of the whole container is alcohol and the rest is water and other stuff.
Usually vodka is only 40% abv the highest % of abv I know of is everclear with 90% of it being alcohol.

+Desire VIPER that's why I make it myself. All I do is go catch a trout at my local river and each fillet can give me 10-20 pieces of sushi. Rice, seaweed, avocado, mayo and Siracha are all dirt cheap. Well maybe not the Siracha, but you get the point.

Not in the UK, we have a ton of smaller sushi shops like YOSHINO or Japan Centre that sell a pack of 6 pieces for about $5 each. And yes, it's is sooo delicious. Yeah restaurants are pretty expensive but tbh I haven't found a better place than yoshino's sushi yet. Restaurant prices are around $12-~$25 a plate, and they're meh... nothing special. Might as well go for korean bbq instead.

Actually, the word Sushi has nothing to do with any cooked or raw fish at all. The word Sushi in Japanese means "Sour Rice" or "Seasoned Rice", because Sushi rice is seasoned with a Japanese rice vinegar. It has nothing to do with raw or cooked fish.

I guess I could understand why some people have issues mentally with raw fish. The US has a crazy amount of fear when it comes to eating any kind of meat raw or even undercooked since it's linked to salmonella and disease. Japan doesn't have the same issues as we do when it comes to eating raw meats, they're used to it for the most part and don't have the mental block.
