the fact that luongo never won a Vezina is a shame
thanks brodeur
thanks thomas
thanks lundqvist
thanks rask
but i agree, sucks a lot
IMO Luongo should of won it in 2007. Bordeur was the winner, but he was playing on a much better team and only had slightly better stats than Luongo. The 2007 Canucks was literally carried by Luongo.
Deserved it in 2003-04 and 2006-07
And the same goes with Jonathan Quick
It’s the most egregious indictment on the current method of selecting the winners.
His first playoffs game was awesome, 72 Saves in a 4OT marathon.
107K Shannon killing it... congratz... The Real MVP of Hockey he is... I love your channel, cheers from Finland...
One of the greatest of all time. Should have played 1 more season and got his 500 wins. LUUUUU!!
Hall of Famer for sure.
Lu was a great goalie. He may not have the individual hardware, but his Twitter account should more than make up for that.
@Jim Rinkenberger 🤣 that's so cute, twitter account'll get lu inta the HHOF 🤣
The original orca jerseys are criminally underrated
Johnny Canuck agreed. However the Messier association will always hurt. 😄
Willy Scottsman True, but I think of the West Coast Express mostly when it comes to the OG orca.
I like the blue and green ones better since blue and red is way too common of a color combination
Lu is my all time favourite goalie, so much respect for him
Top 5 goalie all time dont @ me
It's crazy how long he played in the nhl
It’s refreshing to see someone who actually has hockey knowledge and knows the game analyze players like this. Im tired of the people who say the same “he never won a cup!!!!!” Being a Pittsburgher, anytime I try to talk about Matt Murray not playing up to standards and all I get battered with is “HE WON TWO STANLEY CUPS HES ELITE”
I agree, best goalie Vancouver ever had
That first season in Vancouver was incredible, but your totally right about unrealistic expectations. People expected him to carry the team on his back for years after that & it was ridiculous.
Speaking of Cap/Buyout Penalties, I just learned about the Ilya Bryzgalov buyout. 14 years!?!?!?
Joe Clark yeppppp. It’s only game. Y u heff to be mad?
Who doesn't remember Swissgalov
I’m now permanently calling Cory Schneider “New Girlfriend”
everybody new that walks in the room is getting that name as well
He's Binghamton's New Girlfriend now.
@@TheCandoRailfan Kind of like how Cody Carlson was Warren Moon's, "New Girlfriend." He treated him like dirt. He does that a lot. The fact that he never reached, much less won, a Super Bowl, is thus somewhat karmic.
Luongo had some absolute stinker performances in the playoffs between 2009-2011. As well as some nervous moments in the Olympics. He was an amazing goalie who got into his own head a lot.
Yeah, he put more pressure on himself than even the Vancouver fanbase did, which is saying a lot. They shouldn't have made him captain as that exacerbated things, they should've used Schneider more to help him reset his mental like THG said
Luongo looked best in a team Canada uniform. - World Juniors, Olympics......shit, dude.
Great saaaaave Luongooooooo
I watched the vast majority of Luongo's games in Vancouver, and while he had bad nights as all goalies do, he's the ONLY reason the Canucks were competitive and in 2011, the meltdown was not his fault. He was the only guy who showed up in a blue jersey to play that night and it showed. He basically had to give up fewer than 2 goals (1 on most nights) or the team didn't have a chance. Sure, he was paid a lot, but he was never the problem on the ice. Sure, maybe he should have been smarter about resting himself and nursing injuries, but he wanted so desperately for Vancouver to have a Cup that he played through everything. He was a warrior. Kesler had his one "beast mode" playoff series, but Luongo was ALWAYS in beast mode.
I just remember him crying after a loss to Chicago, he was a very passionate player who just wanted to win and support his team
GOODBYE LABERTO LALONGO - Don Cherry, probably
I remeber when he called oliver ekman larsson "Oliver Lawsum Tossum"

I do love the career videos, especially for players whose career’s I missed. Love the storytelling especially
As a Vegas Fan I can say I didn’t get to appreciate this Mans full career but doing some research I can see why this Guy was held in such High Regard have a great retirement & see you in the Hall, this Guy was Great!
Lu has always been my favourite player. It’s very bittersweet that he’s officially gone. It’s hard to think of the things that could have been, got so close to a Stanley cup and should have won a vezina. If Florida wasn’t such a disaster then luongos career would have looked very different and he definitely could have challenged brodeurs records.
I know this video was going to be North of 20 minutes. I loved it! He had a long and interesting time in the NHL. The two seasons I'll remember him for is 10-11 and 14-15.
Found your channel a few days ago and I just wanted to say keep up the great work! You're very informative and well organized in your thoughts and opinions.
Him playing for the Panthers for so long speaks volumes of his loyalty to his team.
Lmao
Luongo is 100% a hall of famer. Another great french goaltender !
he's Italian and Irish.
@@imnotyourfriendbuddy1883 Raised up in Quebec in the French hockey program and he speaks French.. that is close enough for me.
@@Cryptogab94
fair enough
Who else here after his cup win with the Panthers in 2024?
Good video. Love Luongo
Hall of famer hands down, no questions asked.
Luongo is the greatest goalie to never win a Cup or a Venzina in my opinion. The way they ran him out of Vancouver was criminal. Without him the Canucks would’ve been a joke all those seasons.
Congratulations on a great career and I hope he has an amazing retirement. I wish things had worked out differently in Vancouver, but the return we got for him looks like it’s finally becoming good. Both of the Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks should retire his jersey and I believe he will Be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was a great goalie but an even better person so I don’t know how anyone can thumbs down this video and he’s funny
Waiting on this video since yesterday ! Haha.
Also about Lu: there was the irony of him being sensitive enough that for years he was seen as overly intense, mercurial, and humourless. When the writing was on the wall that his time in Vancouver was coming to a close...Hence came the Twitter, his relaxed nature, and his fun and funny personality came out.
Bobby Lu. To me he's right there with Johnny V as my all time favorite goalies. Add Tom Barrasso, Tuukka Rask and maybe Hasek and you have top 5. Great guy and sad to see his career end. Thanks for very insightful video, especially the Canucks part. I remember grinning many times for his awkward situation in Vancouver.
Interesting choices.
Great video!
wow! crazy consistency with Save %
His first season as a Canuck was his best
2008 shutout streak was pretty sweet too
1 of my favorite goalies of all time. He was worth his contract. Doesn't mean you can do it all on your own. Your D still needs to live up to their part.
That 15-16 playoffs still haunts me...
At least the Islanders got out of that first round. Took them 23 years to advance.
@@dannythomas417 Yeah and being a Panthers fan... we haven't made it out of a round 1 in ages.
Roberto Luongo retired after 19 NHL seasons.
Third-winningest goalie in NHL history played for Panthers, Canucks, Islanders.

Yup! Win/Loss ratio for goalies in hockey is similar to pitchers in baseball. The guy with the most wins isn't often the best goalie or pitcher. Save percentage = ERA.
Great job.
The moment I remember Luongo for was his 60 shots against/ 57 save TIE vs the Juggernaut Red Wings team in 2002.
Shannon, there’s no debate! The man is 3rd on the win list, he’s a shoe in.
AaronTheAngler could’ve been higher up if the Panthers didn’t suck so bad
He retired on my birthday... was always big on Luongo, but he never reached the heights I had set for him. I always thought he was going to follow the line through Roy to Brouder to Luongo.
Watching the whole luongo/vancouver and luongo/Schneider stuff play out was like watching a hockey version of gone girl
Him, McLean and Demko are the best goalies the Nucks ever brought in.
I agree with playing Schneider in game 6 in Boston. That first goal by Marchand, just a weak wrister coming down the right side over his shoulder...ugh I just felt my heart drop.
However, he had just won the Canucks game 5 in a 1-0 win, an extremely rare score nowadays. How can you justify not playing him? 🤷🏽♂️
Hindsight is 20:20
That's the same reason Glen Sather left in Grant Fuhr in 1989. Up 3-1, against Wayne Gretzky, and, the Kings, he proceeded to leave him in despite losing the last three games by a combined score of 22-5. His loyalty to his goaltender was greater than his loyalty to his other players. Bill Ranford SHOULD have been put in at some point because that's why he was there. In 1990, he won the Cup, and, the Conn Smythe Trophy. This was the series where Grant Fuhr finally got exposed for the fraud that he was. He watched the next season largely from the sidelines due to injury, bounced around the league, and, developed a cocaine habit. His jewelry collection put him in the Hall of Fame. Glen Sather promoted himself to GM after the incident, although, he probably should have been fired as this was his fault.
What will remain to me through history is that Luongo was fine playing for bad teams. He was so comfortable in Florida that he was willing to play out his career - knowing full well he would never win a cup.
Matthew Blom The Panthers wasted so many years of Luongo. Any other team would have found a way to win with him in that 1st stint in Sunrise.
Milbury made Florida's gm seem like a genius
This guy knows his shit about hockey subbed
The guy's workload in both Florida and Vancouver was fucking insane and not talked about enough. The guy was starting 65-75 games a bloody season.
His days in Florida doesn't get the acknowledgement it deserves. Luongo is super loyal.
He was my fave ever even before he was a Canuck
That's a nice jersey.
Roberto Luongo is a hall of famer as his numbers stack up with the greatest in his position. His career journey is similar to Marcel Dionne where his best days we're on bad teams. Big reason why he didn't win as much hardware.
I'll never forget his save on sharp in game 7 ot. I thought a 3-0 series lead was completely blown.
14:04, That's funny, I also believe that Vancouver should have played Schneider at least once in Boston. What makes it all worse is hes the one who started the game in Boston in the 11-12 season and Vancouver won it.
Luongo in Panthers gear always looks good.
I would argue that Luongo rivals Hasek (with an honorable mention to Ryan Miller) for greatest goaltending talent to grace the NHL.
Why? Well consider the 2 consensus GOATs, Roy and Brodeur. These guys are both obviously amazing, but when you look at the teams in front of them, it is night and day to the teams Luongo, Miller and Hasek had in front of them.
Hockey's a team sport, and while great goaltenders absolutely steal games, how a goaltender is remembered is largely in part to the team in front of them.
Imagine Luongo with the 90's devils in front of him like Brodeur had, or the same era Avalanche or 80's/90's Habs Roy had. It would be insane.
He is the 🐐 of all goaltenders in NHL history in my opinion
Bang on!
So mistreated in Vancouver by the management, media, and fans.
Well done. I agree with almost all of your points and we remember his career the same way. I only disagree that Schneider should have started Game 6. Luongo was coming off a 1-0 shut out - it wasn’t going to happen. It may have thrown the Bruins off, but Schneider didn’t play particularly well given his chance in Game 6 of the CHI series that year.
All in all great vid and an persuasive tweet to @hockeyhalloffame
there is no doubt in my mind if bobby lou is a hall of famer, im just asking when they are gonna announce him there.
Lu was the goalie I watched growing up. Don't think I respect anyone more than him in the NHL. Hope he's enjoying retirement
Your "New Girlfriend" analogy is hilarious, but accurate! :)
We got Bo Horvat out of it, saving yet another draft year, 2013, from being an absolute complete write-off and waste of time, so I’m not complaining.
Johnny Canuck I took a look at the Canucks draft history prior to Bo. It’s pretty bleak
Cody Hodgson was well on his way to becoming an impact player. But then he got greedy lol.
GoryPug Canucks went like 6 or 7 years without getting ANYBODY through the draft. Yikes.
@@gocanuckurself1 We've had crappy drafts since 1970
We did draft Rick Vaive and Cam Neely....... then traded them
I recently went onto my NHL 12 GM mode as the Islanders GM and traded for Roberto Luongo. Being that Rick DiPietro was the only good goalie in the Roster, it was a move that was worth it in my opinion. Now that I have Luongo in net and Rock DiPietro as the backup, the Goaltending has improved much better. But I also did it in light of his retirement.
Funny how the best Luongo trade was the one with Toronto that was blocked because of the contract
Prob should rename this to "The Hall of Fame career of Roberto Luongo" :D
They broke the mold after they made him.
I have a hard time being a Vancouver fan after the organization and so many of the fans tried to run him out of town. Its really a shame how people treated him. They blamed losing the Final to Boston on him when he set record for having 2 shutouts in 1-0 games. The offense did nothing to help him and defense at times did nothing either yet it all fell on him. There was a few lopsided games where his team had no business being on the ice. Raffi Torres had the same amount of goals as each Sedin in the Final. Luongo is Hall of Fame for twitter too. I hope he enjoys the retirement.
Number fourth Bobby Orr
Good job examining Roberto’s Career, But I have to disagree with your point of Game 6 Stanley cup finals vs Boston. I would have played Corey on the road but I wouldn’t throw him in just for game 6.
Had he played on good teams he most likely would be the best goalie of all time
Vancouver was a good team back then.
@@invegapalpiredonevictim5279 Too bad it wasn't a lucky team.
Loberto Ruongo
LUONOGO IS MY IODOL
9:15 The alternate captains could also be the ones speaking to the refs. The Canucks had 3 alternate captains when Luongo was captain: Ohlund, Kesler, and Mitchell
12:35 I laughed at the girlfriend analogy haha
14:35 Luongo had a shutout the previous game, so the Canucks probably wanted to continue playing Luongo to maintain the momentum
Luongo is the biggest source of guilt for me as a Panthers fan, I wish we could be a more successful team
the 03-04 statline, i feel so bad for him
You know Shannon imma be honest I used to not get you love for Roberto lauongo. I always thought he was a good goaltender but not hall of famer. But after watching this I have to agree. He had quite a good resume. The only thing I don’t think is I think he’ll be a second bailed hall of famer. I do think he will definitely get in though

Luongo career was amazing but I also feel when he lost he lost and when he won he lost too. He’s gets blamed for everything and when’s thing are going good he doesn’t get enough credit. He’s a first ballet hall of famer and one best ever
He was not Florida's best goalie ever that was Vanbiesbrouk, but after he left Florida in the early-2000's only posted 1 losing season, imagine if Florida was better in his early career
Beezer over luongo??! Ur joking
@@calebowman9782 For overall importance to the Florida franchise, absolutely all the Beezer did was carry those early teams provide veteran leadership carried the franchise to the Stanley Cup Finals winning series vs Boston, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, and many think saving the franchise in South Florida, some rumblings about the franchise being relocated to Nashville not everything is about stats
@@richardlorith8256 Saving it to play in half-empty arenas, that is somewhat of a mixed legacy.
@@matthewdaley746 I lived in South Florida in the early years of the Panthers, up until about 1998 the Panthers were a very popular team in the market, they have just been mismanaged and bad trades have doomed them

May the fourth be with you
He always was the scape goat for everything it seemed like. Is he the best goalie who rarely played for good teams?
Number 4th overall I like it
Wow this video makes me realize what a love-hate relationship Canucks fans have had with many of their all-time greatest players. It’s why we can’t have nice things...
Exactly what I was thinking
Luongo's gonna make the real HHOF easily. One of the greatest.
the NYI trade is asteal with just Lu but ollie as well is just like why mike
No question that Luongo is a Hall-of-Famer. I just wouldn't put him in the first year of eligibility because he never won a Stanley Cup and he never won the Vezina. His career stats are definitely HOF level but the goal of every star player is to win championships. Being great in the regular season is fine but a goalie who can step up in the playoffs, maybe steal a few playoff wins over four rounds is what IMO makes an undisputed 1st ballot HOF'er.
Me either, second year.
As a tender I always hated goals against !!!! Percentage save is a better thing to grade a tendrer !!! but that is just me!!! i have played on some very ....Interesting teams!!! LOL
My saying in the 2011 Canucks playoff run was, win as a team..... loose as a team. When the Canucks lost Game 7 against the Bruins, a relative and fair weather Canuck fans posted on her FB. Win as a team, loose as a team . F that, Luongo lost the Cup. I was dealing with having watched my Canucks lose in the Finals, for the 3rd time on their history. Yes, everyone can voice this opinion on social media. but if you don't understand the game....
“Human eclipse
Rhinoceros hips
Who will laugh last
When I slash your calf
Bring me peace
Make it cease
Get your big ass
Out of my crease”
Luongo’s career may have ended, but @strombone1 is eternal.
If major penalties were challengeable that OT goal vs the Ducks wouldn't have counted
Only it wasn't, and it did.
All I want to say is: LUUUUUUUUU!!
With all the respect in the world for Lu, it is his pocketbook and not his body that drove him to retire. Even at his age he isn't going to play for 1.6 million. I think he should have. He could have gotten 11 more wins as a tandem with Bob and there would have been less of a recapture fine with only 2 years left on the contract. Cheers.
kosmicwizard, but why should he put his body through the rigors of another season?
@@csolivais1979 because he can? Because he could have had 500 wins? IDK...
It is amazing that he never got a Vezina.
We can attack Luongo for his seeming lack of play in some games in 2011, but are they even a playoff team without him?
Thanks Milbury.
I often think that a goalie is elite if they can "carry a team on their "back" when needed to.
