Young Lady, you are super. Not many people will try that without experience as you said. Wonderful job. You seem to be a very ,thougfull person and that is needed to be able to work with wood. Congrats.
I agree with Miguel’s comment and really enjoy your videos. My wife is impressed with your determination and ability to figure out how to get the job done. Thank you for sharing your projects and keep them coming. Mike Tovani
I am 72 years old. Just bought my small one man cave home for my retirement. You inspired me to build my own patio the way you did. Thank you for the great ideas.
Cody is a lucky man, you are a dream boat and a very accomplished woodworker. Kudos to you for picking up the trade and making it your dream. Loving your channel so far.
You impress the hell out of me; not because you’re a woman, but because of your initiative, perseverance, determination and work ethic! Also, your spoken narrative is better than most I’ve heard! I’m looking forward to the videos of finishing your shop! Awesome work!
Yes April, I enjoyed part 1 and part 2. Having little clue of how to begin such a large project, and all many steps involved gives many many viewers a good sense of what is required to build such an awesome structure. Very nicely done. Glad as well things are working out well for you on RUclips ....
Great job April ... I loved your Instagram Post where you signed your work "Built by a girl". I'm showing this to my granddaughters with the hope of inspiring them. Way to go!!
From one old school carpenter to you, April...!!! Someone schooled you well, after watching just a few of your videos, I am convinced that you've learned the most important tricks of our trade. Work smart, the rest comes easy. Are you also fascinated with the finer details of our craft, like spiral staircases & Bannister's, kitchen cabinets and intricate crown moldings and trim...!!!!! ..lol...you've a good eye April, kudo's...!!!
First time viewer, and I'm shocked at just how confidant and capable you are! I'm not talking about man vs women, I'm saying for your age you are very talented and very clear and concise, well done!!! I'm 50 year of age and I wouldn't tackle what you did, maybe its youthful confidence or talent, but you get the job done and bloody well too... Congrats Aussie Sean
Wow. I'm extremely impressed. Please tell us your background in carpentry because you certainly are not a beginner. You do things with no fear and you know exactly what you want. You execute everything beautifully. I've been a carpenter for 25 years and I'm sure I could learn something from you. Great work!
I am so happy I found your video! I now can show my better half that i will be fully capable adding on a front porch to our new house. He has seen me do a lot of different things but not build a porch yet thank you. For making it look so easy!
Bravo April, we have contractors adding a deck with roof riright now with a wheelchair ramp for me. I must admit watching them work makes me miss it. keep it up. you r Awesome!
Job looks good as usual. I would suggest installing some soffit venting of some kind. You may end up with condensation in the roof space without adequate air movement.
It's great to see a woman tackle this project because I want to build a porch roof and it gives me confidence seeing her be able to do it! Marvelous!!!!
For doing the ceiling single-handedly, one possibility might be to install the rear trim board (or a temporary place-holder) and slip the back end of the panel into place, letting the trim board hold it up while you secure the other end.
Wow April, what an inspiration, I am buying my first ever house, the house has a pretty nice 3 season porch. When my son saw the ceiling this is exactly what he mention to me to replace the stain ceiling panels. So the project will complete two tasks.. one, tear ceiling down, check for mold, then clear any mold if found, ( strong suspicions) and redo the ceiling like this. I have hope now. As well, we will build a second story deck across the back of the house. ( river frontage) ... the posts I watched you install will be a great reference video. Another Well Done Video April.
Looks good mate.Maybe round off the trim on the pole bases, I can see shin/ankle pain. Lucky you're not in Oz. 6--12 weeks wait for council approval with a $500 fee. big fine for unfenced pool and large fine and possible disconnection for illegal electrical work. But then again I won't be telling my council about the new shed and I will do my own electrical. What they don't know can't hurt me. Look forward to the next project. Cheers
Her entire back yard is fenced, so the pool may not be an issue. Also, codes and ordinances vary by state and even by county. In some places, this would be cool, as it wouldn't be a major load-bearing structure, but an attachment.
Australia is a bit of a nanny country in many ways. Health and safety issues get ridiculous sometimes. While in Greece you can basically do whatever you want, inspections are done after building and errors fixed afterwards. Makes me wonder why we have international standards
Completely agree with you about nanny states etc., and living in the UK I see it first hand all the time (increasingly for the last 43yrs - but HEY we're leaving the EU now). Having said that, nobody wants to go to an idyllic holiday apartment in Greece where someone with absolutely no electrical experience or regard for human life (just money), has done the electrical work, or gas work for that matter. It's not unheard of for holiday makers to be carbon monoxide poisoned by incompetent/unscrupulous landlords installing dodgy boilers/heaters. OK. I'll get off my soapbox now, but regards from Mark in the UK
Wow you are super talented. Love the way you and your husband work together. Love Love Love your work. Your video's and explanations are very clear, precise, and not with to much talk. I really like how you stay humble and do not brag about your abilities. God bless you and yours!
Hmmm, the front of my house gets too much sunlight in the summer, it's a dreary walk from the driveway to the front door in the rain, and the whole edge+gutter has to be redone anyways... Extending the roof with a patio like this would solve everything, I think I might give it a go after the winter! greetings from Belgium, Isabelle
The drywall lift is most likely the best idea, April. Years ago i built one myself out of 2x6s and made a pulley system so that you could just wheel it into place and crank the drywall up to the height you wanted. I think the whole thing cost the price of a few screw since I had the materials lying around the house. You're a smart lady. You could definitely make one yourself if you wanted to.
so back in my drywall days, I would use a dead man for one person ceiling drywall installs. Its basically just a 2x4 about the length from floor to ceiling with a tee at the top. You could then use it to prop up one end while screwing up the other. It was a REAL PAIN IN THE A__ :)
I'm 5'7" and used to get 8ft sheetrock on the ceiling by myself, no dead man, no breakage, no lie. Never fear, I had a buddy who was 7ft and would do 12ft sheets...by him self!
First of all I want to say “you inspire me to do so many projects” your amazing . I have a question though ! Can you make a video of how to install electrical and get power to it please Thank you
Wow Just Wow. I have always been impressed by your projects but this time you have out done yourself. You did something an entire professional industries is designed around by yourself...SKILLS! Lol I hope you feel the pride when you look at it cause you have earned it!
Great job, I love the end result! I'm also very impressed you managed the vast majority of the project on your own -- very well done! While the posts themselves are raised off the ground because of the metal brackets they're seated in, I'm wondering if it would have been advisable to have left a gap at the bottom of the post trim so that any rain water can run away? I'm thinking that with the trim in contact with the concrete, rain water will likely collect and rot it over time.
Hello April, Nice build. In the UK we use a "dead man" for supporting sheet material when working alone, a suitable length of 2x1 with a tee top to jam and support the other half of the sheet. Another handy tool is a water level, Handy for setting out post heights etc., this eliminates compounded errors that can happen when using spirit levels. Regards James.
Wow! Great job! I've been wanting a patio cover for our back deck, and have been telling my husband that I'll build it myself if I have to. You are an inspiration! Thank you for sharing.
I stumbled onto your video, to say I'm impressed is an under statement. I am a retired contractor and very critical of work I use to do. You are as good as most and better than some of my workers. You also communicate well. Keep it up!
I would guess that depends on how the wood is treated. I have seen a similar design go bad. The wood on the outside of the corner expanded more than on the inside of the corner. There is now a gap on the inside of about a 10 degree angle.
Nice job. Your thoughtful planning and careful attention to working the process carefully has impressed me. Thank you for taking the time to post it all. It's a service to us all.
Great video. I used to try to lift wallboard and paneling over my head, then my friend told me to rent a drywall lift. Wow that made 1 person lifting overhead easy. 8^) Did you pull permits?
New to your channel, you just gained a sub! You're inspiring to women who don't feel they could take on these kind of projects because it's the "man's job". Loved this, good job!
Hey April, quando eu pensei que você tinha terminado com a cobertura, você volta com outro video e dá um belo acabamento. É gostoso ver você fazendo essas coisas. Good job April.
Looks great and really works well with the rest of the property. Once it is stained and had a bit of weathering it will look like it has been there forever.
Another very nice job, April! That roofing material is interesting stuff, and not bad looking at all. You are so fortunate to have access to a great variety of cedar lumber. We have next to nothing where we live, and it's aggravating at times. I would sure love to get my hands on some of those 6x6 posts! Two things I noticed that may help you out downstream, and I'll bet you already know about them. When you leveled the front facia boards that you connected your rafters to, you used a standard 4' level, which works well enough. I learned when I built my deck about using some clear 3/4" hose filled with water, then you just even up the meniscus on both ends and voila, you've found your level. This is great when accuracy is a must across long distances that need to be level or when for some reason you can't use a regular level. Also, you mentioned you didn't think you'd be able to put up the ceiling boards by yourself, and you're right, that is a very tough job, but it helps to build a "T" from 2x4's with 45's to support the top of the "T". These can be made from scrap pieces of 2x4, then cut to length and used to support one end of your 4x8 sheet while you and your hubby can hold up the other end and fasten it. It's a LOT easier on your back that way! Another great job!
Hi, I am 69 yrs old. I have been doing this kind of work for over 30 yrs. It gets me upset when men cant believe I have done things like putting up dry wall, flooring, elec. Etc, etc. U keeping going on and make the rest of us women proud!👍👍👍
I think this young woman is outstanding, I especially like her independence, yet realization that there are times -- very few, in her case -- where help is good. Outstanding. April, is there ANYTHING you won't tackle?
Love the shingles, Also like the finished plywood used on interior. Small thing though, everything looks so nice, recommend adding baseboard to existing barn to trim it out. Good job!
again so impressed . on the ceiling wood I use a drywall jack makes it a one person job all day . and your arms don't get tired. lol have a great time on your next project.
April, you are so awesome! Such incredible ambition and fearlessness. I am intimidated and inspired. I wanted to build an overhang on a previous house I owned but never had the courage to take it on. Looking back it was way over my skill level but I sure would have learned a ton by doing it. Good for you!
April, you are an inspiration to young girls who need to understand they can do anything they put their minds too and that includes building anything. Great Job!
i can see you building a house in future , i am always impressed how you work out the best way to complete a job mostly by yourself, Brain over braun.Well done
Young Lady, you are super. Not many people will try that without experience as you said. Wonderful job. You seem to be a very ,thougfull person and that is needed to be able to work with wood. Congrats.
: ) Thank you
I agree with Miguel’s comment and really enjoy your videos.
My wife is impressed with your determination and ability to figure out how to get the job done.

That is awesome! Glad you found it useful. Enjoy the build and thanks for watching.
Really impressive work, April! That is a huge project and it turned out great. Totally seamless with the roof of the existing structure.
Cody is a lucky man, you are a dream boat and a very accomplished woodworker. Kudos to you for picking up the trade and making it your dream. Loving your channel so far.

im impressed with your PATIENCE/DEDICATION over the projects you are doing ALONE!..just a lady like you..more power to you!
All this great work, and I'm blown away by the maneuver for yanking sheets of paneling out of the truck. Like it was nothin.
Yes April, I enjoyed part 1 and part 2. Todd Reimer I agree
We use to use a piece of timber almost the length of the board on our head. Was awkward but worked, once you tacked it up all was good
.... or if you are in the UK some 4x2.
Matthew b.
The correct type of drywall would have been right. Regular drywall, no. You'd need some Purple Board to do outside work.
I don't usually leave any comments but I got so impressed that I had to appreciate it. Good luck.
The trim work can definitely be time consuming... looks like you handled it like a pro! Cool project!
Bravo April, we have contractors adding a deck with roof riright now with a wheelchair ramp for me. I must admit watching them work makes me miss it. keep it up. you r Awesome!
April, I'm stunned, but getting used to it too, lol !
You are simply amazing.

Always so positive too !
Have to say I'm totally in awe of how you confidently tackle all your projects. Wish I had your confidence and competence. Well done,

I just started doing diy projects and you are an huge insperation to me. You are so full of energy.

Imagine where we would be as a planet if we were all as productive as this lady
From a carpenter at home with 30 years of experience you did a great job. Older video but felt to need to comment. Well done.
That beadboard is such a pain to paint, I've learned that it's much easier to paint it before hanging it... but everything looks amazing! 🤓👍🏼

No, at least not in Australia - there is an assumption that kiddies live and play in that backyard.

You guys have a beautiful home. And your really increasing its value and your homes comfort..
You need a trim board at the bottom of the barn wall. Other than that, GREAT WORK!
Evolution Glitch i was looking at that too.
Evolution Glitch agreed
It turned out great. I love the lighting. Hard work made to look easy. Bravo. Inspiring.
youre awesome! I just did this for my house following your steps! thank you!

Later put a rain gutters on when you have time
does need them if it rains a lot in the area.
I stumbled onto your video, to say I'm impressed is an under statement. I am a retired contractor and very critical of work I use to do. You are as good as most and better than some of my workers. You also communicate well. Keep it up!
a good decision to cap off the post bases with mitered 1" boards.
I would guess that depends on how the wood is treated. I have seen a similar design go bad. The wood on the outside of the corner expanded more than on the inside of the corner. There is now a gap on the inside of about a 10 degree angle.

I was going to suggest the same thing about a renting drywall lift when you said you don't know how you would lift the paneling by yourself.
Or for a small job with light material like this one just make a T support out of some scrap
was going to mention that david here we call them dead men
Great job! I am jealous of your skills! Younger me would have tried it but probably wouldn't have done as good a job as you did! Impressive!!!
Next video: How to build a house from scratch - Part 1
Andy Krause You bet! She’s awesome and doesn’t even know it.

You didn’t shy away from a project that a carpenter would look at twice. Good through build! Keep them coming.
Fred Thomas SKOKIE IL.
What was the total cost?
New to your channel, you just gained a sub! You're inspiring to women who don't feel they could take on these kind of projects because it's the "man's job". Loved this, good job!
You should have put a ceiling fan in one of them so wouldn't be hot out there if you were sitting Under that little Eve
WOW, wonderApril, I'm watching your videos after two years, but I'm enchanted by your skill. Really good
Michele
seeing a girl that can do so much serious work....makes me feel I am useless in my life !
I'm super shocked and impressed! What a beautiful patio!
Hi April, I just can't NOT say something--so VERY IMPRESSIVE!!
Good job, April. I like your Go For It attitude.
i am fully impressed how much work you put on ...and the level of details is top notch
Wow....couldnt believe that the job was done by a woman . Amazing job.
U deserve a thumbs UP !!!!!
It's a LOT easier on your back that way!

Absolutely Amazing work! It turned out very nice!👍😀
Fantastic. Everything was explained clearly and I learned a few things too. I agree with the other commenters - a TV show should be next!
April, you are an inspiration to young girls who need to understand they can do anything they put their minds too and that includes building anything. Great Job!

Quite a task you undertook AW. I bet you feel real good, cuz from where I sit, it looks fabulous. Very Nivea indeed!
nice choice on the post boxes. I liked the first idea but you second choice looks great!
