I'm also an English teacher in Japan who also came up with the idea of using cartoons to make studying natural English more engaging! My technique is a little different however, and I've got two that I use. The first one is just for a scene, similar to this. Beforehand, I give the students a list of English words that I've selected (usually ones that are used in Japanese too, with the idea of being able to hear the correct English pronunciation) and if one of those words appears in the scene, I swap it out with a letter of the alphabet, colored red for easy visibility. For example, if the word is 'dog" I might replace it with "E" whenever it appears in the subtitles. The idea is for the kids to be able to pick out and understand just these keywords in a sea of unfamiliar words. I often also include the Japanese subtitle too, just so the kids can understand the scene a bit better and to "prime" them for the appearance of the keyword if they know what it means in Japanese. The second one is for whole episodes. Once more, there's a list of keywords, however this time, I also include some fakes that DON'T appear in the episode! The goal is to watch the episode and circle the words that did appear in the episode and cross out the ones that didn't. I also tell them how many circles and crosses there will be so they know they're on the right track. This one only need the Japanese subtitles.
