My thought exactly, in the beginning. He should have realized immediately after it started that there wasn't high enough oil pressure. He even grabs at the rocker arms and doesn't notice. But, that oil at the end looks mighty full of metal fragments, so it's possible (not probable), that the video quality is to blame for not seeing the oil flowing. Edit: After viewing the video a second time at about 2:11 you can see oil flow down the valve spring. Edit 2: I can't be certain (the video quality is rather crappy) but the part of the piston rod coming out of the oil pan appears to be the crankshaft end, not whristpin end. It possible he didn't torque the rod correctly, and it came loose, then the crankshaft shoved the rod through the oil pan.
@@justplanefred it didn't drop nearly enough oil. What spilled out was a cup, if that. The pump could have easily sucked all of that up and have it in the oil passages, but leaving the pan dry. There wasn't even any oil getting to the top of the heads, so even if there was enough oil to the cam, it wasn't enough to go up the pushrods. And I also doubt there was enough oil going to the cam, because if there was enough oil it wouldn't have thrown a rod as fast as it did. It was running dry
Besides no oil spraying all over the headers.......duh ...you crank up the idle because its getting tight from the bottom end going south you guys are hilarious!!!
seriously. 30 years ago I rebuilt my 350 chev and I studied IT. First thought i had watching the rockers is "where's the oil" because when I made my adjustments it was a frigging mess. Well done boys.
That's kind of irrelevant to the fact A the valve covers are off, B no oil is squirting from the top end everywhere, as it should if it had oil pressure and C the cooling system was the least of that engine's problem after throwing a rod. Wonder why (other than the description saying it wasn't torqued correctly) it threw a rod?
And getting cocky, racing it several times. From my perspective, even if oil had been circulating through the machine, technically the engine is brand new, which requires a break-in period where you don't throttle it like you're at the drag strip doing qualifying runs.

I’m thinking there’s an oil pressure issue, or oil starvation I’d just imagine with no valve cover oil should be sloshing all over the place, but it looked bone dry the whole time
I would use oil control clips to control the flow of oil downwards. I’m kind of assuming that’s what this individual did because I don’t see one drop of oil spraying anywhere so he’s either using oil control clips or there’s no engine in the oil and that’s not the case because if there was no oil in the engine but if that was the case you would hear the engine, knocking really loud.
Yes as a mechanic I work with a lot of guys with all their certification have fun maybe two-thirds of them were the worst mechanics ever work with they had all their medals and credentials but you wouldn't want them to work on your car.
In my extensive experience, you don't ever "goose" a fresh build for at least half an hour to break in the camshaft. Those of you who noticed no oil from the valves also have a good eye. If it hasn't started oiling within the first 15 seconds, shut her down!!!
That's why you prime the oil pump before installing the distributor. To ensure oil is coming from the rocker arms. Oil should have been flying from the rocker arms. Smoke would have been coming from the headers because of oil splatter.
Why would run it without priming the engine in the first place? First rule of a first start, #1 make sure your engine is well lubricated before you start the engine.
I remember one I had pretty much together and then I started questioning whether I had tightened the cam bolt. Pulled the water pump & timing cover (oil pump in cover; '74 Buick), checked torque and, yes, I HAD tightened it. Damn sure not going to forget a MAIN cap; hell, they're called MAIN for a reason : ) ALTERNATE CONVERSATION: #1 Did you put oil in it? #2 Yep... I think. #1 What? You're not sure? #2 Well, you're making me question myself. Tell, you what. Sling a rod, and see if anything leaks out. #1 NOW yer' thinkin'. STAND BACK!
Paradise Road I don't think this was due to oil starvation, the engine was barely hot and they were only giving it a few revs, something must have been loose in the bottom end.
This is what happens when you're more focused on the headers you'll use once you have it on the stand than you are in actually rebuilding the engine...
@@Bryan-Hensley I have built 100s of small block chevys over the years and I still do it every single time just to verify the pump is working and I’m going to get oil to the top end before spinning the motor over. But i dont know any true builder who dont prime the motor first.
"Hey Fred, did you torque the rod caps?" "I couldn't find the damn torque wrench, so I did it by feel." "I mean, What's the worst that could happen?" " That's Cool, fire her up"
Is that a con rod poking out the side of the block? I'm thinking not assembled properly -> no oil pressure because it's all leaking out of misassembled big end or something, and the misassembly also caused the failure. the same mental level required for vertical filming was the same level when a rod bolt wasn't torqued down and caused a new engine to go south
Paint Correction Officer well said
William Taylor don't even look like it had the cap booted at all.
I hate vertical photos
I love how he whips the screwdriver out of the other dude's hand like "Give me that! You don't know what you're doing. You've got to twist thingy here..." BOOM!

He didn’t have any lubrication but at least he had enough cranking amps in that battery to start 14 of these engines simultaneously: 😂
Lmao
Ya i noticed that there should of been oil just pumping out of the top of the head
I think it was lucky he didn't try to start more than this engine ...
Jesus, I know. Looks like it would start an 'Aircraft Carrier'...👌
Man, that went downhill quickly. Thanks for posting this.
These guys must be members of the "Stop Oil" movement.
😂 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅lmao
Should used Lucas oil.😂😂 oh damn the container was right there.
As soon as he started it with the valve covers off and saw no oil I knew this would end good.
As soon as I read the title of the video, I knew this would not end good
Video should be titled: I didn’t rebuild my 350 right and this happened
And or don’t know what I’m doing
It was built fine, they forgot the oil
@@ryantexada9269 the oil pickup maybe seemed to be plenty running out the window they created in the oil pan
No this is what could happen without foreplay!
The silence before the swear words, priceless!
a prime example of what happens when you have no idea what you're doing.
Agreed
Everyone learns from mistakes 👍

Done it heaps of times not a problem
That’s the only way I’ve ever done it……..Old school way! Works well!
Thats the only way on those old girls done it hundreds of times only true way to adjust the valves on em too
I wouldnt be caught dead doing it any other way
Right...I was like 😬😬😬 what's he doin
seriously. 30 years ago I rebuilt my 350 chev and I studied IT. First thought i had watching the rockers is "where's the oil" because when I made my adjustments it was a frigging mess. Well done boys.
At least it blew before they installed it.
The only comment that makes sense
Always best to look on the bright side...lol

Well said
Sweet, now I know who to send my engine to for a great rebuild!
I’m glad to see he had the radiator hooked up. Something real bad could have happened if the engine wasn’t being cooled
But we there any water in it?
That's kind of irrelevant to the fact A the valve covers are off, B no oil is squirting from the top end everywhere, as it should if it had oil pressure and C the cooling system was the least of that engine's problem after throwing a rod. Wonder why (other than the description saying it wasn't torqued correctly) it threw a rod?
did you notice the hose collapsing in on itself?
@@AstrosElectronicsLab all correct but...it was a joke comment
How about no oil. You can run for a bit with no water but there was no oil in the heads
Honestly I'm very surprised it lasted that long with it not oiling at all.
And getting cocky, racing it several times. From my perspective, even if oil had been circulating through the machine, technically the engine is brand new, which requires a break-in period where you don't throttle it like you're at the drag strip doing qualifying runs.
@@lorenzoparedes2306it’s not brand new, it’s a rebuild. Some new parts but far from brand new.
My silly brother who knows nothing about cars was driving his Ford Au xr6 around with no oil for a week, I said it sounds laboured and I checked the oil the stick was bone dry I said your oils leaked out, it come out of a loose fitting tightened it back up put more oil and Morey's in it it pours like a kitten till this day, quite good sounding engines in that model
it was getting oil to the rods but nothing else so something was loose causing the oil to not get where it was needed
When you don’t add oil uncle Rodney is sure to come a knocking

Most underrated comment on this video😂😂😂😂👍🏽
Haven't mechaniced for lotta years but I do recall taking my valve cover cap off once (and forgetting) started it aaaaand....didn't take me long to shut it down once I got about mid fender from the drivers door. The beginning of the video had me wondering "what changed from those days?" Apparently, very little.
Why does this “fresh” rebuild look like it has oil drained from the engines of the titanic after decades under water….?
I agree, Oil looks worse than a melted mars bar.
Because there was no oil pressure so you’re looking at all the metal shavings/glitter mixed in
Rod probably busted into water passageways and oil mixed with water
Yup looks like milkshake. Most likely mixed with water/coolant
I was just thinking that.
"You put oil in it, right?"
"I thought you were gonna put oil in it."
Classic 😂
I did put oil it, but the engine was getting heavy, so i added one qt only.
I like how he checked the rockers as they appeared loose as his cam lobes were being wiped.
Hah,I I was thinking , similar ,but hah your right, hah ,is why he was checking the charter... Bin there ..,t , could of done that..but didn't with crude experience.
Lol.yep
It had oil at least. Just no oil pressure. What do we think? Pickup fell off?
Yeah, first thing I noticed, running it without valve covers and nobody was getting an oil shower....
I dont know alot about cars but......
That was odd to me! 🤔

After my first rebuild I started the car with the valve covers off. Oil all over the garage walls! High volume oil pump really worked well.

The best engine I ever built was a 350 four bolt main bored 40 over. I installed roller rockers, anti pump ups, ran 'double humper' heads (good luck with those anymore), Hooker headers, double 650 Holley carbs with 750 deep throw primary pumps (all the tricks), Offenhauser semi high rise. etc, etc, and installed the whole thing into a 1923 T bucket roadster. 550 hp in just under 1500 lbs with me in it.
It was fun. Aw, the days gone by.
You should have seen the look on the CHPs face who called me out to race one day going down highway 99 here in California. He couldn't believe it. 'I wanna drive that'. Uh, no ya don't. It'll make you shit yourself.... The days of yore.
Oh, and that was backed by a Muncie Rock Crusher 4 speed tranny (that I built) with a straight throw Hurse. shift.

There's no oil pressure.
Does it even have oil in it ?

There’s one really really important part, oil pickup tube and it’s over there on the bench.
Dammit I knew that went to something
Or the oil pump drive shaft Lmfaoo
So is this how long assembly lube lasts?
Probably didnt use any
@@leobardofilipe2367 I wonder what I was doing 2 years ago when I commented.
@@superduty4556 nevertheless good observation
@@leobardofilipe2367 I don’t think the oil pump was doing anything. The first time I saw any oil was on the floor, there should have been oil everywhere even at idle so if it wasn’t getting up top I doubt that the connecting rods or main bearing were getting anything. Someone forget to put in the pickup tube?
If the oil pump is driven off of the distributor that shaft could be missing or misaligned.
Boy these two are pretty sharp on engines aren't they lmao. No oil out of the push tubes to the top end should've been a red flag
Justin Lienhoop you know I was thinking the same thing. As they reved it and no oil bouncing off the lifters and I'm no engine expert.
Justin Lienhoop I noticed that too. Why didn't they see that. Can't really run an engine very long without valve covers.
No oil pressure, that should have been pissing oil out the rockers! red flag event!
Interesting how was making no mess from the rocker arms. Chevy tends to me messy with valve covers off. Sounded faintly like a rod knock in there under the exhaust noise.
The title of this video is why 90% of the guys I went to high school with didn't show up to the mud bog.

Literally the easiest engine to build
I was freshening up these motors at 16 and 17 for mud trucks. Break it down hone it, new rings bearings, maybe an oil pump. Run the absolute shit out of it if it blows I'll get another one for 150$ it's easy to do dumb shit when you don't care bc your not really invested into it! I wouldn't even fire the motor unless i primed the shit out of it and knew it was getting good oil. Amateur mistake these guys made...
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
ah lets see no valve covers & no oil spitting out ? mabee a good time to see if the oil pump is still sitting on the work bench !
Lol!
phdfxwg Fischercat well it spit out oil in the end. Well, when I say oil, I really mean mud. the oil looks like it may have had water in it.

phdfxwg Fischercat Yep!
How long will it run with half ass oil pressure?? Ooo. We found out. I wonder if the block was race prepped or if they had a good oil pump on her!
Can't believe they didn't notice the heads had no oil
Meth?
I’m thinking there’s an oil pressure issue, or oil starvation
I’d just imagine with no valve cover oil should be sloshing all over the place, but it looked bone dry the whole time
That's what I was thinking
Anytime I ran an engine with covers off you had smoke everywhere from it hitting the headers.
Im thinking they are a pair of cousins that kissed one night and built them this here motor baby 👶
My first thought exactly
Yep exactly, oil should be spitting out everywhere from roller rockers
Cletus; "That thingy you fixed is hanging out the side of the engine again Earl"
It's eye opening when you see how long it takes a power drill to pump the oil to the top of the engine after a fresh build.

Fuckin send it "dude"
I would use oil control clips to control the flow of oil downwards. I’m kind of assuming that’s what this individual did because I don’t see one drop of oil spraying anywhere so he’s either using oil control clips or there’s no engine in the oil and that’s not the case because if there was no oil in the engine but if that was the case you would hear the engine, knocking really loud.

ASE = ask somebody else.
Raymund Brown I have only a little experience, and I know you don't do that! Some people shouldn't be allowed around cars.
roller rockers don't oil like stock rockers... 😐
Sean Gangstad I saw that.
You usually need to "prime" the oil pump so it gives oil without turning on the engine
That's why you prime the oil pump before installing the distributor. To ensure oil is coming from the rocker arms. Oil should have been flying from the rocker arms. Smoke would have been coming from the headers because of oil splatter.
Why would run it without priming the engine in the first place? First rule of a first start, #1 make sure your engine is well lubricated before you start the engine.
...did you put oil in it?...
...yeah...
...how about the oil pump?...
...oil pump?...
I remember one I had pretty much together and then I started questioning whether I had tightened the cam bolt. Pulled the water pump & timing cover (oil pump in cover; '74 Buick), checked torque and, yes, I HAD tightened it. Damn sure not going to forget a MAIN cap; hell, they're called MAIN for a reason : )
ALTERNATE CONVERSATION:
#1 Did you put oil in it?
#2 Yep... I think.
#1 What? You're not sure?
#2 Well, you're making me question myself. Tell, you what. Sling a rod, and see if anything leaks out.
#1 NOW yer' thinkin'. STAND BACK!
Paradise Road I don't think this was due to oil starvation, the engine was barely hot and they were only giving it a few revs, something must have been loose in the bottom end.
...yeah...I think you're right...it wasn't a seizure...it fell apart...
Camp Matthew He added that later
as the guy wrote in the disciption one of the rodcaps wasnt torqued to spec a bolt went loose and she threw a rod.
This is what happens when you're more focused on the headers you'll use once you have it on the stand than you are in actually rebuilding the engine...
Growing up with a mechanic dad, I seem to recall he would pull distributor wire so the engine wouldn’t start until he verified oil flow...
That's the correct way to do t. The tool cost 5 or 6 dollars and it takes about a minute to pressurize the oil system.
Prime the oil pump with an old distributor shaft and drill. Would've saved a bunch of money
@@michaelmcneely1034 not necessary if it's lubed during assembly..

@@Bryan-Hensley I have built 100s of small block chevys over the years and I still do it every single time just to verify the pump is working and I’m going to get oil to the top end before spinning the motor over. Is that a con rod poking out the side of the block?
I'm thinking not assembled properly -> no oil pressure because it's all leaking out of misassembled big end or something, and the misassembly also caused the failure.
So I'm thinking failure like that not directly caused by no oil pressure, though of course that would have caused other damage.
