That hailstorm is proof of why Shoestring preferred grainers and boxcars. He didn't want his noggin drummed on!
The problem with riding grainers is that they usually terminate and get humped in North Platte. So, basically, you have to get off and find a new ride in the world's largest train yard. So, I do ride grainers sometimes, but the IMs are significantly faster, smoother. and I find them to be a more comfortable ride most of the time. So, it just depends on what's available and where I'm headed and how much time I have.
Casey Hobo Pizza. George, you forgot to mention the 12 pack of the tallest, cheapest beer as well (with 1/2 of them gone before getting back to the train)! 🤣🤣 Got-ta still love Stobe! 👍👍
Haha, yes, Steel Reserve was it?
@@JumpingoffthecliffThat is nasty stuff! I'll never drink that again!
I've got to be honest. After stobe and shoestring. Train riding is just not the same. I so appreciate what you do. It's just sad.
Yes, they were so unique. I enjoyed both of them too.
Omg I know it's sad also kind of weird but maybe not we all die it's just stobe died very very young and shoestring is basically my age still somewhat young if that's not young then I'm in tfouble..lol yeah it's sad and they both made very good detailed videos I started watching them back in 2013
Let's hope youtube keeps thier channel up to keep their spirit alive you know!
@@Jumpingoffthecliffyour channel is awesome glad your out and around let's hope we all can stick around as long as possible
@@AlisaPowerDashaSunBirdsHillsBr I'm like Steven Wright, "I plan to live forever, so far so good", lol.
I hope months don't go bye before another video is posted. Your just so chilled and relaxed, I really enjoy and look forward to watching them.
Another episode coming shortly!

As always right on.
Thanks Jim!
Your train ventures always have something interesting in them. Hail was the first.
North Platte seems to be my go to destination for storms!
Reast in peace shoestring. Was also awesome in riding . Sad lose 😩
Very entertaining Mr. Cliff 👍 definitely a G rating which is always a plus . 🚂
The weather is all part of it. Better to be prepared.
Great ride George, Stay safe n dry.
Thanks for sharing George, safe travels and stay dry pal.🏴
I continue to love your videos…..stay safe!
Thanks for the video George and looking forward to the next one on your adventures west. I saw my first Casey's on my recent roadtrip, in Eufaula OK, and thought of Stobe. I know many others say the same. Travel well and safe. Stay dry!😉
When you went through Cedar Rapids, you were about 3 miles from my home.
Great to see another video!
I'm from Waterloo. But moved to Coffeeville, Alabama after I retired. Money goes way farther down here
I like Iowa City, cozy town!
nice video, i always love when you upload.
Friends Live near a rendering plant out in the Country outside of St. Louis and the year-round smell 🤔 is unmistakable. Thank GOD the wind changes directions.
No way! I'm pretty sure there was a snake in the a long grass/weedy spot your were laying in. lol That was pretty interesting seeing that barge, thanks for sharing. It looked like that train was moving pretty fast down those tracks. When the rain and hail started I was glad to see you had something to cover up with.
That mirror image caution sticker on the container really tries to mess with my ocd. lol Thanks for the video!
Nice clip, huge plant where you got on. Like the shorter clip 20 minutes.
Ride safe sir, lots of love from India 🇮🇳
Thanx for the ride George, green eyes and safe journeys a head!!1!
Another great chapter in storytelling.
Nice air mattress, brother.
Great video
Another good one.
That really sucks getting stuck in hard rain and hail and most likely it got cold after the hail. Great video however looking forward to the next one stay safe
Hello and good morning Mr George..
As always, another great video. Keep it up and safe travels!!!
Thanks, I'll do my best!
Ride ON!
Thank you, George.
You're certainly welcome Mark!
Nice Video.
Thanks George! Here in LSE, a lot of flooding on the campground! Most campsites closed! May shoot a video on it! I saw old Milwaukee Road hoppers at the Portage yard. btw, I observed solar panels on top of hoppers at the end of them, does anyone know what they're used for? Later!
Hey John. I’ve seen solar panels on some of the Herzog ballast hoppers. Not sure if they provide power for controlling the dumping or not.
Wow, it’s crazy how much ran they’ve had west of here. Here’s hoping you’ve got a dry spot to camp.
@@Jumpingoffthecliff Thanks George! Maybe that's what they're used for! I am staying dry, real windy last night!
9:40 'silos are disappearing' - maybe was that way, but one of the farmers I am watching just installed three huge silos and I agree with his plan. It does away with the tractor compacting at harvest, most of the spoilage during storage, and tractors to gather the feed each meal. They just finished the third silo and I am not sure how many tractors he can do without, but it looks more efficient than bunker storage.
Wow, interesting. I just see a lot of the bag systems in use. I wouldn't mind seeing them make a comeback.
I'm 67 from Iowa. I built Harvastore bins on my younger days.
My understanding is they are building an entirely automated feeding system for their dairy farm. The robots will be loading feed from the silos and delivering it to the barns
Thanks for sharing the adventures. I just revisited your book, GREAT Read.
Good stuff George 😂🤣👍🇺🇸
Been waiting for part 2. Worth the wait 🔥🎯🚂
Enjoy every moment .
I saw my old drop yard in Cedar Rapids.
You get to see so much different scenery and industries riding the rails and passing other freights, looks like a thrill out on the high iron, people don't realize how important the freight Railroads are, enjoyed the ride, nice EMD SD70ACE HU on UP,just recently watched the Yard Buzzards ride through Klamath Falls, big hell stones!🛤🚂🍻
Great video George ! Hope to see the next one soon.❤
Thanks John, I’ll have it this week.
love your content sir u have it all dude the comments u make about the places going by just hearing u talk with the sounds make it so vivid and real ,discovered u during covid buddy u and shoestring were my go to .keep doing what u r doing. RIP shoestring, peace
Ever consider closed-cell foam pad? No inflating or deflating, no chance of leaks, quicker to deploy and pack for the outdoor sleeper who never knows when she or he might have to be on the move.
I’ve used other pads, including self inflating, etc. I used a blue foam pad that was light weight, but didn’t roll up that tight. The accordion pads are handy and provide insulation from the cold steel of the rail cars and a little padding. I occasionally use an air mattress in addition to the accordion pad if I’m going a long ways. The folding pads stow so easily I think most of us end up using them.
Super videa díky a zdravím z České republiky :)
👍
George, I love these videos my friend.
If you ever end up in Southern Ontario, in the Hamilton/Burlington area give me a shout, and I will get you sorted out.
Nice video. Safe travels
Thanks for your support Brad!
Hi George, Great second part to your trip west. Thanks
It certainly wasn’t the most comfortable of rides, lol.
@@Jumpingoffthecliff The weather certainly wasn't very helpful to you. Didn't look like there was much space in the well of that intermodal car.
@@TCRailRoad it was a pretty typical well. I prefer the wider versions if I can find them quickly.
Another awesome video. The closest I got to hoboing this year was climbing on a junk train that stopped on a siding in Holdrege, NE. Hung over the side to capture a head-on pic of a BNSF locomotive as the hotshot passed me. Loads of fun Trainspotting. Probably could have been arrested but fortunately wasn't. Keep those vids coming!
I've always wanted to hop off for a day in Holdrege but have yet to do it!
You probably went thru Marshaltown rail yard.
I don’t remember seeing you ride “dirt face” before. I’m sure you got pretty wet during the rain! Safe travels.
I'm one of the few riders who prefer dirty face. I like seeing what's coming;)
Can't say I would've cared for that ride. ( easy comment to make as I lay in bed).
🥳🙌
Thanks for another train hopping video. The composition, editing, music flow nice considering you cannot always have the camera recording. The addiitional details of what you see along your travels is great. I didn't see any hazmat placards on those barges like you normally see on trains and trucks. As for west bound coal, the Reading Northern RR here in NE Pennsylvania ships a lot of local Anthracite coal west. It's high carbon content makes it useful as a filter. Covered and open hoppers are used, depending on the customer. watch for the RN RR name on the cars, it's probably anthracite inside. Stay safe.
Yes, I do expect west bound coal east of Chicago. I always see the CSX coke express headed for steel mills in Gary!
Crazy insane! How do you NOT get seen / caught???
I stay down in the busiest areas.
💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Any tips for a newbie wanting to get into train hopping all the advice helps thank you!
Make sure you have plenty of water and gear to keep you dry/warm/cool etc. Avoid catching out or bailing on the fly.
@@Jumpingoffthecliff thank you🙏
Do you have much of a sense of how far a particular train or even a specific car will actually be going before a hop? Or is entirely guesswork? Do freight lines have schedules of any kind?
There are trains that run every day between the same destinations and the timing can be somewhat consistent, within a few hours. Intermodal trains run between intermodal facilities and tend to be long distance trains running from the ports on or near the coasts to places like Chicago, etc. I try to avoid local trains, which are generally shorter, because they do drop cars off in the middle of nowhere.
Do you wear hearing protection while riding?
I have ear buds in much of the time. The IMs aren't as noisy as the manifests are.
Yes Iowa is just a little flat. Growing up and living in Oklahoma I've got to admit hills make me a bit uneasy. lol What bivy do you use? Thanks for this video and stay cool and safe.
I think the brand is outdoor research. It has a shock corded pole that works to provide a hoop for the head end which is pretty nice.
You need some good leather gloves.
Loaded coal train going the wrong way-Bindenomics at work?
Uncle Pete making money;)
your a moran
Is UP fast than BN?
They're both at the top of the game on speed and quickness out west. Neither one wast time on crew changes on the Z trains.
Los Angeles to Chicago BNSF floors it.

What year your born on.
I'm very old;)
Does your wife mind you spending quality time with big Agnes?🤔
Haha, shhhh!
Referring to your comment about the UP’ s policy concerning employees working outside during a thunderstorm, my first day working for the Chessie System in 1980, the Chief Clerk took me outside, pointed to the sky and said, “It doesn’t rain or snow on the railroad,”🫤
Lol no it doesn't
