Great video Ken! I remember getting my first iPad right around launch day. I was prepared to buy the 16 GB version... but Best Buy was all sold out. I ended up purchasing the 32 GB version and I'm glad I did. Today it doesn't get much use, but actually that extra storage space comes in handy to play around with old apps, games, and multimedia files.
I remember Microsoft (at least I think it was them) showing off a prototype of an add-on camera for the iPad... but I don't think it was ever released, as the iPad 2 included a built-in camera. Although I still would have loved an add-on camera for the original iPad.
It's really interesting to watch the recent documentaries "General Magic" and "Love Notes to Newton" and see where the ideas from the iPad came from.

Bro you deserve more views, your videos are really well made.
I remember my cousin had the first gen ipad, and it was the most exciting thing when he came over to my house, because we get to play together on his ipad. He was pretty cruel to his ipad, there were a lot of dents on the frame, and scratches everywhere. We played a lot of games on it, and once he even forgot his password and we spent a whole day guessing it. Later on, he got the ipad mini 1, the old ipad still worked, but barely, sometimes it couldn't charge. And after few years, when the mini went a little obsolete, he got the ipad pro right after apple first introduced pro models for ipad. I remember it was so powerful, like there was nothing that could take full advantage of its performance. But now thinking back, it's just a A9x chip, and it's probably pretty slow by today’s standard. My family and I moved to another country few years ago, and i haven’t seen him for since then. Guess he's probably got the new ipad pro (his family is pretty wealthy), wonder how he is doing. Miss those days

I love that kind of design they were going for at the time, but Jony Ive really didn't, I love his hardware design, but it was a huge mistake to let him decide what iOS and macOS should look like. Maybe today it would be way less skeuomorphic (we have to agree that it was too much skeuomorphic in some apps), but at the same time, less flat and boring as it is today. I really wish Apple went back and brought a bit more depth into the UI of iOS and macOS.

My iPad story is kinda sad. The last time I saw my grandfather.."living" was when I took him to the Apple store in Castleton, IN because his iPad 2 was having problems. I got to drive his Mercedes which was cool and we stopped in the Tesla store because we both have shared a lifelong love of cars. I sat with him for probably an hour and a half because they were so busy and it was nice to get to spend time with him. About a month later, he caught pneumonia, and--upon visiting him in the hospital, he was unable to speak and barely awake. That was back in 2018, and now when I think about the iPad, I usually think of him.

My parents got an iPad around launch in 2010. The iPad totally shaped my childhood and who I would become.
When they got it, I didn’t really know what it was or how to use one, since i was 3 and I only had experience with the iPod Touch. I was so happy when they got it, because it could play movies that i would want to watch from iTunes, it could play some of the tv shows I loved to watch as a baby, and, most importantly, it was powerful enough to play Angry Birds!! (I was obsessed with it at the time). Over time, they eventually got newer iPads, like the 2, 3, 4, Mini, and so on. 2015 was when I got my own iPad. It was the Gold Air 2 with cellular. I loved it so much. It was a really great introduction to the modern Apple. In 2016, I got the iPad Pro, and was amazed at how huge and powerful it was. I was rocking that beast until 2019, when I got the latest iPad Pro. So far, it is amazing, with the quick Face ID, Lightning fast LTE speeds, etc.
But in essence, an enormous part of my childhood was Apple and the iPad. The iPad helped me develop my love and knowledge of Apple. Happy 10th Birthday iPad!! 🎂🥳
(I actually still have my 1st gen iPad with me right now. It is in great condition!)

I’ll probably upgrade my iPad this year as it’s rumoured to not be supported in iOS 14, I’m leaning towards the iPad Pro. I enjoy using my iPad for RUclipsr, Netflix, Disney plus, the internet, games and productivity. It’s nice having a smaller device then a laptop or TV that is portable and yet still bigger then a smart phone.

Only gripe is the 4GB memory when I have to use Affinity Photo for work; having only that amount of memory causes the app to crash from time to time when dealing with heavier projects. Otherwise, it works well. Multitasking is also lacking. Maybe I’ll go back to a Macbook when the time comes I need to upgrade. But I remember that we were in the mall on her birthday, and I was pointing out the stores, and I remember pointing out the Koodo store and her saying " Oh! We need to go in there " and I don't remember anything from inside of the store, but I do know she came out with a Black 8GB iPhone 4. Then after that we went to Visions Electronics and bought a Black 32GB iPad Mini and a Griffin folio case with like fake leather on the cover. And I think my mom also got a Black Otter Box for her iPhone 4. We used that iPad Mini until the motherboard died ( I now think that they were lying and that it could've been just a fully depleted battery ) but they gave us the complete opposite to our original, because they switched the motherboard to a White 16GB model, thinking we wouldn't notice, but we did. After that we used it until 2017, when we were traveling, and I saw an Apple Store, since I had never been to one, I just needed it see it. But after that my mum got a 32GB iPad 5th Generation, and we still use it now.

There could have also been inspiration from the movie 2001: Space Odyssey. It shows tablets as we know them (thin portable screens)....only thing was back then, it was of course envisioned as an IBM tablet.

That's likely, too! I believe 2001 also inspired some of the iPod elements, plus Apple has parodied HAL9000 in marketing material, so that wouldn't surprise me!

I remember struggling to get used to the school iPad that I was given from 7th to 8th grade. The app store was locked down, so only a handful of approved apps that appeared in the Self Service app could be used. Really, I just wanted to get send it back. Why use one if I can't customize the software experience a little? That was about 3-4 years ago.

Hm, I started out with a Newton... and eventually ended up with an iPad. It's too bad some of the features of the Newton didn't make it into the iPad and I still have my Newtons from OMP through the MP2100 and eMate300... too bad when the Newton was developed they did not have the miniaturization of silicon and electronics to make it thinner. The Assistant from Newton definitely was an awesome feature that eventually ended up in my opinion as Siri, but in many ways Siri does not do such a great job as the Newton Assistant feature.

I was not impressed with the original iPad, thow now I own one for compatibility with my very old apps and games. But when the iPad 2 was announced, I wanted one so bad, but could not afford it yet, until a year later, when I finally bought the 3rd gen iPad and used until 2016 (my God it became so so slow with the updates of iOS). Nowdays I can finally do some proper work in Lightroom on my iPad Pro 10.5inch.

I'm not sure how related this is but the iPad's form size is not coincidental is it? The Mini versions followed the A size metric paper while the main iPads seem to follow the B size metric paper layout
To be specific the non Pro iPads are in the B5 paper range while the minis are in the A5 range... yes they are literally metric notebooks while the Pro are Sketchbook B (B3-B4?) sized notebooks

The tablet computer was also described in the Arthur C. Clarke novel version of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” The fictional product name in the book was the “Newspad.” That’s where Apple got the name for their own new platform!

I think the criticism in the early days was warranted. I had an iPad 2 for a while after it came out and sold it cuz it was pretty damn useless. Far too locked down, no file browser, no downloading files, a lot of web content that you wanted to view back then was still Flash so couldn't do it, that kinda thing. To get much of anything on it you had to sync with iTunes, for a Mac user that's probably fine but I'm not so... euch. They didn't even bother porting the clock app from the iPhone until iOS 6 iirc, they clearly weren't giving this thing their all to start with, focused mainly on the iPhone. Fair enough if you ask me. However over the past 3 years or so they seemed to have put a tonne more resources into the iPad software, adding a file manager and such and the nets shift towards touchscreen-friendly and non-Flash based content has made it a significantly more useful device, so uh good job I guess Apple you made it to 2011 Android :P
