Before the rise of Genghis Khan-before the battles with samurai and the siege of Baghdad-the Mongols were merely one of many nomadic peoples enduring life on the periphery of powerful Chinese states. But the Mongol mode of living, beliefs about the world, and acquaintance with war turned them into relentless, elite warriors. This is the beautiful, cruel, and hardcore world that created the Mongols, and planted the seeds of an empire. Thank you to @TheJackmeisterMongolHistory for guidance on sources and script feedback

Most of the videos on world war history deal with the world conquest of Genghis Khan, the world conqueror of the world's most powerful empire, the Great Mongol Empire, but the history of the wars of conquest by the ancient Central Asian Mongol nomadic cavalry before Genghis Khan's world conquest is also incredibly powerful.
The timing couldn't be better, leaving for a trip to Mongolia tomorrow to experience the Nomadic life :)

Mongolian history is soo fascinating for me and people definitely don't talk about them enough. Genghis was a kid collecting wild berries and then all of a sudden he has an army of hundreds of thousands fearless and brutal men pilling up mountains of dead bodies.
Not true he was very conniving as a kid but to be far he had be.
When was Gengish Khan a woman collecting wild berries. I saw in his life story, that he killed his brother, when he was ten years old, because his brother was selfish. He had very tough childhood being a slave after his father died around the same time, but he fought for his freedom and became very good military general even after losing to his friend Jamukha in a battle, that sent him as a slave to India.

I found myself constantly gripping my drinks cup as the video progressed, releasing and subconsciously gripping it again. You and your brother have a remarkable talent. I hope you take the step to even longer videos, even if they can't always have all the art from your brother. I want to hear you on ancient southeast Asia, and ancient central America and even ancient Australia and the South Pacific for an hour or more. You are talented. Can't wait to hear more.
You made my day. Thanks so much. More videos coming soon!
I couldn't agree more. I could watch this for hours. I'm always left needing more
This is actually something I’ve barely learned about.
Thanks! This period is often not discussed at all when covering the Mongol Empire, but a growing scholarship, archeology, and critical reading of the early sources reveals quite a bit about the pre-Temujin Mongols. These dynamics (such as the Jin executing Ambaghai) also explain the early Mongol expansion. I thought this would give some necessary context to the rest of our Mongol videos, where it felt like we were watching the Mongol armies but didn't quite "know" the Mongols themselves.

When Temüjin was a boy, the center of the steppe world was the Orkhon Valley, the old imperial site of the Türks. The valley was dominated by the Kereit. To the west, on the upper Irtysh River, lay Naiman territory. The Kereit and Naiman, not the Mongols, were masters of the steppe. The Kereit and Naiman elites spoke Turkic and had partially converted to Christianity under the influence of the Nestorian Church. In an effort to out do each other, To'oril of the Kereit and Tayang Qan of the Naiman accumulated men, weapons, alliances, and prestige. Yesügei Ba'atur sided with the Kereit. Later Chinggis Khan would subdue the Kereit and the Naiman in the course of a protracted effort to defeat all challengers among the steppe peoples.
I wouldn't go as far as saying "master's of the steppe" bc they all operated separate from one another until they were unifiied. they at the time were larger & more powerful. but the tatar's themselves too were also a dominant tribes on the steppes & grasslands, hence why other sedentary civilizations categorized all nomads as "tatars", the tatars had wealth the mongols never seen.
Let's not assume anything, brother. Beside Naimans, tribes like Keraites, and Merkits were pretty much thought as mongolic. You have no proof of their elite speaking turkic or whatever.
However, Rashid Al-Din Hamadani recorded in his Jami Al Tawarikh that Keraite was similar in language with Mongols.
Kereit and the Naiman are all Mongolians in Mongolia. The Mongolian provinces of the steppe used to talk to each other and understand each other. The Turks were Kipchaks and Seljuk Turks. In 1206, all the tribes united to form the Great Mongolia were Mongols. They spoke and wrote Mongolian and followed Mongolian law. When the Mongol Empire was established, all Mongols became kings and baron. Maybe later some Mongols became Turks.
Everyone in here making assumptions.... the truth is, it's difficult to determine when turkic language ended & when mongolic began.
Bc many turks under temujin eventually did become mongol.
The uyghurs willingly went to temujin, & sought the Mongols protection, in turn, genghis khan knew the importance of the written language & required his sons, generals etc learn uyghur script, which was later called chagatai turk, which is essentially their old language, which is today's karluk turk. Even the capital name karakorum is essentially both turko-mongol, essentially black fort in turk

@@Zelein the story telling is A plus with not much animation to work with
1 biggest misconception everyone has about Mongols is that there were not a specific, different kind of people called Mongols. The term "Mongol" came to existence after the tribes were gathered into one. In this video the map refers to Genghis khan's tribe as Mongols but actually it was Borjigin. His tribe name was Borjigin just like Jamukha's tribe was Jadaran and Subutai's tribe was called Uriankhai and all of those tribes were Mongols!. What I'm trying to say is that the term Mongols is not 1 tribe but its a term used to call everyone who lived in the Mongolian Plateau.
That itself is actually a misconception, but the history is complicated so I can understand the confusion! The Mongols ("Mengwu" and "Menggu) are likely mentioned as far back as Tang texts (618-906), but the identity was nonetheless in flux despite a common language and traditions. At the setting of this video, the 12th century, the "Mongols" would have referred to the specific group shown on the map, generally under various khans and leaders but broadly united under people like Qabul and Ambaghai Khan. When we hear terms like the Borjigin, Taichud, Jurkhin, etc. these are sometimes nebulously called tribes, but are more like clans or ruling houses-royal lineages rather than an ethnic group. All of those ruling houses are distinct but Mongol, and often allied through Mongol confederations.
The role of Temujin in creating a new Mongol identity is that he will (largely) dissolve a lot of the distinctions between Mongol and non-Mongol eastern steppe peoples in his conquest of the steppe and establishment of the empire, such that neighboring steppe groups such as the Tatars, Kereyids, etc. come to be called Mongols by virtue of their allegiance and subject status to the Mongol Khan. See the bibliography for some academic reading on the subject! I’d recommend Christopher Atwood's short piece on early Chinese interactions with the Mongols. Hope this helps clear up the confusion.
With this backstory you understand why Temujin became Great Genghis.Fatherless at a young age,his mother siblings and their mother being abandoned by his clan and left to fend for themselves in the wilderness;his actions throughout his life were probably driven by a desire to prove themselves to his people and bring glory back to his fathers name
Always a good time when History dose drops a video
The demographics of Nepal changed due to Genjhis khan. Nepal was a way different country before 1300.
The name Mongol appeared first in the eighth-century Chinese records of the Tang dynasty, but only resurfaced in the eleventh century during the rule of the Khitan. At first, it was applied to some small and insignificant nomadic tribes in the area of the Onon River. In the thirteenth century, however, the name Mongol grew into an umbrella term for a large group of Mongolic and Turkic tribes united under the rule of Genghis Khan. It is not clear what the Mongols called themselves in their own languages. In fact, the specific origin of the Mongolic languages is unclear. Some linguists have proposed a link to languages like Tungusic and Turkic, which are often included alongside Mongolic in a hypothetical language group called “Altaic languages”.
Mongols called themselves "Mongol". What do you mean? Concept of "mongolian" and "mongolian language" was created by the time of Chingghis.
Xiaognu,gorturk,mughal timurid Mongolian empire
The Kitan people's language was mongolic as it had more mongolic words than chinese or turkic and even before them the xiongnu which in classic chinese means hunnu or the huns...
@@calvinsuu1949 all I understand from this though is that them Northern tribes have been given China problems even before Ghenghis Khan
@@ernyserok8278 not necessarily true man, its very difficult to know when "turkic" ended & "mongolian" began, bc during the time of chiingis, other nations whom the mongols fought & conquered didn't call the mongols "mongols" as we do today, they were called "tatars" by numerous nations for a very long time, up until the court of kublai when he reinforced "mongol" around 1250 or so

Something is oddly coincidental with these great influential men rising to power or renown. From humble or poor beginnings to changing the world forever. As if there was some divine calling that only they could answer to and there was no other choice
Probably some survivorship bias going on here. Most humans who ever lived had humble and poor beginnings. Those who we still talk about are necessarily those who made a big enough impact on history to be remembered

The 13th century inaugurates a new period. The leader of a Mongolian tribe, known as Chinggis Khan, united a number of nomadic tribes and launched a series of campaigns and conquests that created a large unified Eurasian empire, completed by his sons and grandsons in the 13th and 14th centuries. The empire finally extended across most of Eurasia: Siberia, Inner Asia, Central Asia, the Far East, China, Korea, Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Iran, the Middle East and the Near East. The defeated realms became subjects, vassals or tributaries. The Silk Routes, which connected the trade centers across Eurasia, came under the exclusive control of the empire. What kind of language empire was this? We would expect a predominance and breakthrough of Mongolic, but this was not the case. The overwhelming majority of the 'Mongol' armies spoke Turkic, largely as a result of language shift. The Mongol campaigns resulted in a massive wave of linguistic Turkicization. Their demographic consequences were immense. Huge numbers of Inner Asian nomads, Turkic and other tribes, entered Central Asia and the regions beyond it. Massive groups from the east were transplanted to new locations, joining local Turkic-speaking populations and laying the foundations for new Turkic-speaking areas. Old confederations were dispersed in favor of new units, the germs of the modern Turkic-speaking peoples. Turkic had its breakthrough and conquered a giant territory. A new brand of Kipchak Turkic was introduced by those tribes that arrived with the Mongol armies. It became the dominant form of Turkic in the area between the Volga and the Ural mountains. A new era in the cultural development of the Turking-speaking groups began. The 'Pax Mongolica' established a relatively peaceful area of unified administration and similar legislation, based on the Mongol code of law. It created stable cultural, social and economic conditions for communication and trade in the vast Eurasian territory of the Mongols.
