It's a better story if Kino doesn't make it out. Kino even said he was already dead. If you think about, he knew the only way they could escape involved swimming. He wasn't trying to escape, he was trying to get everyone else out. Those men were his responsibility. That's why he's smiling as they all are jumping out, when he says "I can't swim" the second time. The later reaction is him fully realizing he's not going to make it. Kino's "one way out" was death.
So heartbreaking. The ultimate heroic sacrifice. Like Rogue One I guess. Cassian's words of "not giving them what they want" strike even harder that way.
You know what I noticed? Cassian isn’t a good leader. But he’s great at supporting a leader, nudge them in the right direction. Like a grey cardinal. Perfect spy honestly)
One of the things I noticed early on is how Cassian and Syril are foils of each other in many ways. One of the things here is that Cassian knows himself. He knows he's not the leader, but he knows he can do that supporting role 110%. Meanwhile Syril has no idea of who he is.
I think he was acting like a good leader by inspiring the person he knew more people would listen to in this situation. Kino wouldn't have gotten to where he was without Cassian's encouragement

Seriously tho this show is hitting all the checkboxes for me. A dark, gritty drama in the SW universe with not just superb but masterful acting, characters that make me feel, writing that rivals the top shows in the world, and that good old SW cinematography. I would love if S2 picks up a few years later or just some time passing. It would be amazing to see Cassian doing rebel work only for someone to mention a familiar name, Kino Loy who is now leading a division of the rebellion. Cut the episode to black.
my entire body was shaking throughout this episode. probably one of the best pieces of cinema i've ever witnessed. i don't think any other movie or show has made me feel so tense as this one episode did. and stellan skarsgård's monologue at the end... just wow... i don't understand how every single episode can build and build and build the pressure and tension like this, it's remarkable.
There’s so many things to love about this show, but the thing I love that they’re showing is how many people had to sacrifice their own future so that hope could survive. First Nemik, now Kino and eventually Andor. I love that they’re demonstrating that no one makes anything alone without the help and selflessness of others before them.
God this show is amazing. The look on his face when he says “I can’t swim” gave me chills. The dialogue and writing in this show is superb. It’s so Star Wars, but also isn’t. Their focus on the Empire and how ruthless they were, and the brutal, bloody way the rebellion began is something I didn’t realize I needed. I wasn’t excited for this show at all but now I can’t get enough of it! It really says a lot about a show like this and let’s say Better Call Saul where you KNOW what happens in the end but the storytelling leading up to it is so compelling!
it adds another layer to his indecision before. To Cassian, the idea of escape is a real one, Kino could never have made it, so (on top of everything else) thats why it took him so long to come to terms with the plan, he knew he was dead from the previous night when he told them all they werent getting out
Sacrificing a few to save a security secret that can help more people was what the Allies had to deal with once they cracked the ENIGMA code in WW2. They couldn't just hunt down all the U-Boats and save the Allied cargo crew ships. They had to let most U-Boats alone to keep the German High Command from getting suspicious. It was a brutal choice.
I was going to make the same basic comment. They portrayed this very well in "The Imitation Game". The intelligence business is brutal - having to sacrifice human lives in order to protect the secrecy of vital sources that can save even more lives in the end.
"If we could fight...half as hard as we've been working" with that crack in his voice, gives me chills every time. Reminds me of the feeling of being crushed as a worker in a capitalist society.
I love that for Kino the question of his character 's fate isn't just "what happened to him?", "was he caught?" or "was he killed?". The question is "did someone help him?" They made a basic character cliffhanger a philosophical/morality question. They gave it nuance. The writing has been so good giving the actors the chance to showcase their quality. Even the slow burn episodes are great because they build the pressure and the stakes. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
I don't think the opening gets faster, BUT there are more instruments in each opening. It's like the orchestra is getting filled out as the story unfolds. I'm really enjoying this show
You don't know how good it makes me feel to see you guys enjoying this show as much as I am...I've never seen such Writing in StarWars as this show puts forward...The acting and just everything out in front of us in this series....I feel bad for fans that gave up on this show !!!
Another awesome reaction, guys! Speaking for myself, this has become my favourite Star Wars project, movie or TV series. Yes, there are no Jedi or the Force or light sabers, and I love those things as well and love seeing those elements when they show up, but the sheer level of intrigue, world building and understanding we get as to how the Empire works, why they're so evil, and why there needs to be a rebellion is second to none here in all of SW movies and shows. And that's the stuff that just sucks me in. The writers, directors and actors of Andor really know how to ratchet up the tension.
Just think, between this series and Rogue One, of the sheer number of people -that we know about- who sacrificed everything to get Luke to that trench in the Death Star, where he could make that one shot into the exhaust tube. It's unbelievable.
Wholeheartedly agree! this show is very well written! Kinos speeches, Luthens speech, "power doesn't panic", the scene with Mon Mothma... this episode had some amazing moments! I cannot wait to see more! this is so good!
So, I know this is a bit late, but the music in the intro hasn't been speeding up. But they HAVE changed it every episode each arc a little different, each time adding more complexity and depth to it, incorporating instruments unique to that arc, and by the end is this rich and full song. It's in parallel with the building of tension happening in the story itself. It's awesome.
Andy Serkis needs a damn award. I SAID WHAT I SAID! This show started out slow for reason. This is a show that believes in story telling and quality. This makes it brilliant. The best of Star Wars.
“This show kicks hard” hell yeah, I did not expect the most to exciting depiction of a prison/ labor-camp uprising to come from Star Wars. Fuckin’ love it!
Andy Serkis, Stellan Skarsgaard, Diego Luna, and Genieve O Reiley are amazing actors, and the script theyre working with- as a writer myself- is extremely masterful.
*"I can't swim" -- find a goddammed flotation device then -- anything that floats!* *How does a building entirely surrounded by water not have a single boat on it?* *Gotta be something in that building that can float. Make a raft out of dead guards if you have to.* *I'd really like to see Andy Serkis' character show up sometime down the road, showing us that he survived*
So funny that they always sing over the intro theme song and didn't notice that each episode has it's own variation of it until last time, and are now surprised about them "suddenly" changing it
@@bryce____1114 House of the Dragon was like a cheap British soap opera that relied on shock and awe, violence and scandal to get viewership. The cinematography was better? Are you actually smoking crack?
I knew you guys were going to have the best reaction of them all to this episode, and I was not disappointed. The writing on this series is next level. Both Kino and Luthen had amazing monologues here and the final scene with the prison, with the swimmers swimming away in the thousands had me in tears. We never saw Kino's actual fate so there is always hope that we will see him again!
UPDATE: The director of this episode has said that Kino "is surely still living" so who knows? If he is in season two, and has a reuniting scene with Andor, that would be awesome. Can't wait!
@@tytrationThat would be a very powerful scene indeed. If they manage to do it, I hope they can keep it a secret until it airs (like Luke Skywalker on The Mandalorian, which they shot and then were able to keep a secret for a whole year!)
Kino knew, this whole time, that he wasn't going to make it to shore. He knew when he was in the control room, he knew when he shouted "Nobody is getting out!".
YOU MADE US WAIT ALL DAY! LOL, Listen, guys, every Thursday I sew cosplays, I count on you and this to keep me entertained whilst doing so. Thank you! I will reply to myself like a weirdo with my reaction to your reaction.
I can't swim = my husband had to pause the show because I was sobbing and crying so hard, it just tore me apart. He rallied everyone, I love Kino. This show is the best Star Wars. I just love it. I had the same reaction as you all to the marriage proposal. I was horrified.
Well this is the second time when a character portrayed by Andy Serkis gets sent to a prison, forced to live in single-aisle quarters with guards who like to zap the inmates who appear similar to one another, giving them slop to sustain themselves. Kino/Caesar then becomes aggravated after a fellow inmate dies, and when he realizes that everyone in there is stuck forever. Kin-er then becomes the leader of the breakout, using a genius plan that involves surprising the guards after acting normal, water, scaring, trapping and zap-killing the guards, rallying the breakout behind a cry like 'No' or 'One way out', leading to them climbing to the top of the prison and jump over the edge. Smeagol: Why that's how we escaped Barad-Dur, precious!
Hey guys, you’re always goofing through the opening, otherwise you would know the opening theme is the same, but the intonations reflect the vibe and theme of each episode. It’s brilliant and I love it. Everything about Andor is perfection. 😁❤️
Me at the time when Jay says "this shows kicks hard" knowing that Luthen's speech is coming - Man you are about to receive roundhouse kick to the guts from this show.
So after I watch this yesterday, I've been counting down the minutes to see your guys's reactions. And I want to say it's exactly how I thought it would be. I knew both of you guys would find the final breakout. Just superbly done and the writing for the characters again. Just magnificent. Two things pop in my mind. Won the gangster talking to the senator because you know he wants a way in to be more legitimate and that's why he wants to introduce his son to her daughter. But the other thing is if you think about rogue One and how they talk about, they were falling behind in the building of the Death Star. This could be one of the reasons why? Because if these prisons are what they're using to build components to it. If this happened then it does put a damper in their timeline.
After the ABOMINATION of Kenobi this is a MASTERPIECE. Whoever is writing and directing this show should be over EVERY piece of Disney Star Wars from here on in. ITS THAT GOOD.
This show is the best thing I've seen since the original trilogy. Don't get me wrong, I love Mando... but the writing on this is just killer and doesn't play down to ppl (like Fett and Kenobi).
Totally got you. Mandalorian is an instant classic because of all the epic adventures and cameos from extended universe. But this show, this is CINEMA.
Serkis and Skarsgård's monologues are AMAZING, but Skarsgård's gave me chills. Luthen knows what it takes to make a Rebellion survive. While I'm a major Empire fan, seeing Kino on that platform saying he can't swim brought a tear to my eye and had me yelling at my TV , "you better fucking make it". The Mon Mothma scenes were good and I wonder if Mon will give up her her daughter for this rebellion.
Awesome reaction guys. Pet theory is that Skarsgards character came up with this plan 15yrs ago, a year after the Empire took over, a year after Padme died... I think he could be her Father. Also i think the blonde ISB woman is the daughter of the main ISB man, based on a few earlier comments. Andor and his mum, stellan and Mon's cousin, Its like a mini theme of parental figures navigating their way thru rebellion while supporting/moulding the younger generation. Passing on the hope while infusing with the hardness required for the times. Themes of regret and determination and the hope that theres a part of their soul left, if they ever succeed.
My Theory: Luthen is a formerJedi (as much as I love a SW show without Jedi) and he is "Using the tools of his enemy to defeat his enemy" means acting like a Sith to defeat the Sith. Playing both sides, multiple angles of attack but lying to them all and willing to sacrifice them all for his goal.
Literally been waiting for this. I really wish Cassian wasn't dead bc this is one of the best star wars characters & shows. Atp if disney wants to tell me that he survived a planetary explosion & the vacuum of space im down with that💀
Imagine the strength of character it takes to damn yourself for others. To believe in a cause so much that you are willing to do anything to advance that cause. Letting innocents die, putting their loved ones in dangerous situations. Luthen is willing to do that so that no one else has to make that sacrifice. He understands that others will see that sacrifice and say that he was cruel and an extremist. He does it so others won't have to make that choice. The future leaders of their cause will be able to keep their hands clean. Others will hate him for it, but...I can't doubt his courage.
I'm starting to hear more and more that this show is The Wire in the star wars universe. I've said this myself from day one. It is exactly that type of show. These are real people, reacting to real things in real ways, just set in a sci fi universe. It is tremendous. I could watch a million of these, as well done as this is. It's the best star wars ever. It also holds true the dystopian themes that GL set up from the beginning. It's simply a star wars story with epic realism rather than pandering to younger ages. It's so good.
Beau Willimon has written the last few episodes. He is an multi Emmy award winning writer, director, and show runner. But, damn why doesn't Andy Circus have a dang emmy or Oscar???
My favorite part about this series is how it’s painting the rebellion not as “the good guys” but the “bad guys who are almost as bad as the empire-almost. Just bad enough that the Empire is still just that hair worse”. It’s such a refreshingly dark take.
No, I don't see the rebellion as variants of bad guys. I think Luthen is just pointing out that "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." It makes the whole idea of the rebellion and its birth seem that much more realistic.
Even if I can kinda expect what is gonna happen, this show still surprises me every week with its amazing writing and stellar performances,it deserves to be watched by more people! btw. cool shirt Jay :)
I'd like to think somewhere the emperor used the force to hear that speech Kino made on the voice distorter and thought "I like that voice. I think I'll use that for my masterplan somehow."
"I burn my life to make a sunrise I know I'll never see." Amazing writing. Just brilliant.

my entire body was shaking throughout this episode. probably one of the best pieces of cinema i've ever witnessed. i don't think any other movie or show has made me feel so tense as this one episode did. and stellan skarsgård's monologue at the end... just wow... i don't understand how every single episode can build and build and build the pressure and tension like this, it's remarkable.
There’s so many things to love about this show, but the thing I love that they’re showing is how many people had to sacrifice their own future so that hope could survive. First Nemik, now Kino and eventually Andor. I love that they’re demonstrating that no one makes anything alone without the help and selflessness of others before them.
If this were a cartoon, Jay's heartbeat would be so intense it would look like Matthew Modine is nodding.
This show has been literally spoiling us between the immaculate acting and ridiculously creative writing. Never been so emotional over a tv show 🥹
I love that for Kino the question of his character 's fate isn't just "what happened to him?", "was he caught?" or "was he killed?".
This should be a good one. The episode was spectacular. Love Andy Serkis
One of the best eps of TV this year. This show is simply superb. It’s incredible.
I don't think the opening gets faster, BUT there are more instruments in each opening. It's like the orchestra is getting filled out as the story unfolds. I'm really enjoying this show
You don't know how good it makes me feel to see you guys enjoying this show as much as I am...I've never seen such Writing in StarWars as this show puts forward...The acting and just everything out in front of us in this series....I feel bad for fans that gave up on this show !!!
this show deserves ALL the awards
Another awesome reaction, guys! Speaking for myself, this has become my favourite Star Wars project, movie or TV series. Yes, there are no Jedi or the Force or light sabers, and I love those things as well and love seeing those elements when they show up, but the sheer level of intrigue, world building and understanding we get as to how the Empire works, why they're so evil, and why there needs to be a rebellion is second to none here in all of SW movies and shows. And that's the stuff that just sucks me in. The writers, directors and actors of Andor really know how to ratchet up the tension.
Agreed
Just think, between this series and Rogue One, of the sheer number of people -that we know about- who sacrificed everything to get Luke to that trench in the Death Star, where he could make that one shot into the exhaust tube. It's unbelievable.
Wholeheartedly agree! this show is very well written!
Kinos speeches, Luthens speech, "power doesn't panic", the scene with Mon Mothma... this episode had some amazing moments!
I cannot wait to see more! this is so good!
When Andy Serkis suddenly goes full on Caesar and leads the charge. God damn this is good.
13:09 I'm so glad my buddies and I weren't the only ones who went A P E during this scene. The entire Discord call was getting overwhelmed by roars.
Andor....the best show ON ALL OF TELEVISION...so good, it's beyond belief.
*"I can't swim" -- find a goddammed flotation device then -- anything that floats!*
*How does a building entirely surrounded by water not have a single boat on it?*
*Gotta be something in that building that can float. Make a raft out of dead guards if you have to.*
*I'd really like to see Andy Serkis' character show up sometime down the road, showing us that he survived*
So funny that they always sing over the intro theme song and didn't notice that each episode has it's own variation of it until last time, and are now surprised about them "suddenly" changing it
I LOVE THIS SERIES! Each episode is fighting to be better than the previous. Sooo many beautiful moments of resilience, love, determination.
The Emmy competition between this show and HOTD will be ridiculous.
Honestly, this show is a league above house of the dragon in every aspect.
@@Sif3r satire? Hotd has better writing, acting, cinematography, action, quality of actors, etc. love andor but it doesn’t hold a candle to hotd
@@bryce____1114 House of the Dragon was like a cheap British soap opera that relied on shock and awe, violence and scandal to get viewership. The cinematography was better? Are you actually smoking crack?
@@Sif3r ur gone be real sad when it sweeps the Emmy’s and andor gets nothing😂. It’s not even a comparison which show is better
@@bryce____1114 lol
“What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you’ll never get to see.”
“I burn my decency for someone else’s future”
This show makes the impossible, possible: My heart was racing while watching this episode, but I could swear I didn't breathe.
Can't wait!
@@JustWasted3HoursHere OH MY GOSH i'm going to cry if that happens
Was hoping Jay would rate this 1/1 ways out.
Been so ready to see your reaction to this one. One of my favorite episodes of the series so far!
It's the same theme song, but every episode they add instruments to it to match the theme of the episode
Thats Why Palpatine never panicked, he had unlimited power
The music in this episode was particularly powerful as well. Well done!
New guy immediately read the room and contributed to the cause. RIP new guy.
Watching this again (I rewatch so many Andor videos) and your comment of the sleeping guy missing 'One Way Out' day is still gold!
Hey guys, you’re always goofing through the opening, otherwise you would know the opening theme is the same, but the intonations reflect the vibe and theme of each episode. It’s brilliant and I love it. Everything about Andor is perfection. 😁❤️
They are adding instruments to the theme opening song each week.
13:07 no light sabers, legacy characters, or force users - just amazing story telling
Disney: "You knew Andy Serkis could act, but did you know he could ACT?"
Andor and his mum, stellan and Mon's cousin,
Its like a mini theme of parental figures navigating their way thru rebellion while supporting/moulding the younger generation.
Andy is the man. I hope he wins an award so he accepts, looks at the award, and says "my precious"
Just gives us Jared Harris for that Chernobyl reunion.
I don't think it's painting the rebellion as "bad guys" it's showing that sadly rebellion has a very high cost and it's usually paid in bodies.
No, I don't see the rebellion as variants of bad guys. I think Luthen is just pointing out that "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." It makes the whole idea of the rebellion and its birth seem that much more realistic.
This show is something else I had my doubts, but the acting has been A1 . Luthens and Kinos speeches goodness had me in tears wow
"I went to the statue to tell them that I did not hit her! I did NOOOOOOOTTTTT...oh hai, Mark!"
I burn my LIFE to make a SUNRISE that I KNOW I'll never SEE.
The coordinated scream with Andy Serkis is why I watch you guy's. Your the best!
What hits me is when he says I can’t swim and the look on his face after he says it
Even if I can kinda expect what is gonna happen, this show still surprises me every week with its amazing writing and stellar performances,it deserves to be watched by more people! btw. cool shirt Jay :)
Best written and acted Sci-Fi show I have ever watched. Maybe even the most beatiful too.... Its a masterpiece!
I'd like to think somewhere the emperor used the force to hear that speech Kino made on the voice distorter and thought "I like that voice. I think I'll use that for my masterplan somehow."
I literally started loudly chanting "ONE WAY OUT!" during the escape. Scared my poor cats half to death.
