Why This Rural Wyoming Town's Mail Was Sent 104 Miles Away

  • Postmaster DeJoy wants to make the USPS more efficient. So his solution is to take mail from this rural Wyoming town, send it to be sorted in Denver, and then ship it back to Wyoming again. It's not just absurd. It's also disastrous for postal workers and rural residents. And it's going to make all of our mail slower, too.

Yet it has been doing just that since its inception, so much that when the Government runs short of its uncontrolled spending it dips into the USPS coffers to fund even more B.S. You really should pay attention as this is common sense that's been talked about numerous times over the last couple decades, with politicians threatening to shutter the service, then the postage rates have to increase to keep it in service. Kind of like when they raise minimum wages and the big bad evil corporations offset the cost onto the customers, the Post Office does just the same and always has! Government workers Want allot of $$$ for their entitlement including crazy amazing benefits packages, so they can either steal it from you in the form of "taxes" or they can provide a service that makes a revenue and pay those wages themselves.

I'm a former City Carrier Assistant and everything in this video is true. Our bosses WILL NOT allow us to get overtime which is required for the sheer amount of packages we get regularly thanks to services like Amazon and Temu. This is because all of the new management under Postmaster General Dejoy wants a "leaner meaner" Postal Service where workers are ran ragged until they quit so he can replace them with automation. Supervisors also repeatedly intimidate and abuse new hires under their 90 days into doing anything they ask for or being let go. I personally had my supervisor cut me down to 4 hours a week as punishment.
They don't care all of this causes your mail or messes with the election this year. They only care about numbers. Dejoy and all supervisors need top to bottom terminations if you don't want your mail to take weeks to reach you and for mail-in ballots to not get "lost." But Congress passed the PAEA in 2006 and the USPS has to fund employee medical and benefits 75 years in advance! About 3 Billion dollars a years lost from operations financing. Why?? In the early 2000s the USPS was testing electric vehicles. At one point (hard to find the news clip) USPS held a glowing press conference announcing that it had the finances and was going to upgrade the postal fleet to new electric vehicles! Very shortly lobbying pressure from the oil industry and auto makers resulted in the USPS financial base being wrecked by the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) legislation!

A small reminder that wasn't brought up: The USPS was solvent until congress reworked the retirement plan back in the 70's and 90's. Postal is the only agency that pays for retirement upfront one hire date and then recycles the money into another fund when someone quits. It's also the only one to *NOT* get this funding from the US Treasury; Every other agency does. It's also the only one to adjust retirement funds due to COLA/inflation pre-retirement.
What does that mean? They have to pay for the minimum 5 years of retirement pay on hire, pay for it all out of the agency's pocket, dump more in whenever 'inflation' happens [which the legal definition isn't what you would think], and if that person quits or is fired before being eligible for retirement the money goes into a slush fund rather than being used to pay for the retirement package of a new hire. That's why there's a push to 'trim the fat'; The money goes to DeJoy's kill the post office project.

Every day they get scans "in transit", while the parcel sits on a truck, waiting to be sent. Management is more worried about
the 4 scans I have to do to return each piece of empty equipment back to the sorting facility.
In this day and age, I don't know how you get this word out to the General Public. But it needs to be done.

As an employee of the USPS, the current regime in charge of the Post Office is focused on one thing, and one thing alone: cost cutting.
There is absolutely zero regard for postal customers and employees. Management is obsessed with endless self-defeating, hare-brained schemes that seek to squeeze, harass, and cut corners… that constantly fail in increasingly comical ways.
The entire goal of the organization is getting completely lost in this disaster. I cannot fathom the abject stupidity of the people at the top of the Post Office.

The 'no layoffs' is a gloat. When employees are laid off, their employers must pay (some portion of unemployment benefits). Doing it this way absolves USPS from having to pay for laying employees off.
Also, note that if an employee quits, they are typically not entitled to unemployment compensation. It's a capitalist win all around.

Smacks of the enshitification Cory Doctorow’s written on extensively.
It’s basically setting the stage for what is the direct antithesis of the USPS’s design as shown in statute to not serve everyone equally but to serve some better than others and to make everyone pay the absolute limit of what they’d be willing to pay but not a dollar more to where they’d just not use the service. Eg the changes to first class service. With the ultimate aim of setting the stage for privatization which is already underway eg the increasing contractor use.

Here in Bethel, Alaska, we have a post office to serve an area the size of the state of Pennsylvania. There are 55 villages and one town that constitute 30,000 people living in this area of Southwestern Alaska. There used to be a small mail sorting facility right up the road from me that all mail coming in and going out would go to. At this facility the mail would be sorted to each village, then put on a flight (only way in/out are light commuter aircraft), to get where they were supposed to go. About fifteen years ago the Post Office closed this small facility and sold it off. Now, if I send a letter to a cousin in Napakiak, Alaska, only 15 miles downriver, they letter is sent into Anchorage, sorted, put in a mail bag, flown back out here from Anchorage (425 miles away), then taken to a small commuter airline for the flight to Napakiak. Yes, this adds several days. My hubby has medication for arthritis he cannot get here in the Bush, we have to have Anchorage Messenger Service pick it up from the pharmacy, take it to Alaska Airlines to have it Goldstreaked out to Bethel. $80.00 total for a $2.00 Priority Mail envelope. But if we mailed it, it could take as long as ten days to get here versus same day or rarely overnight.

This is happening in northern Nevada, too. Our mail will go 130 miles over Donner Summit to Sacramento to be sorted. Donner Pass is closed an average of 37 days every winter. It's not just rural areas getting screwed. Even a lot of decent sized cities are getting left behind. Reno, metro area of over half a million, is seeing its mail sent to Sacramento, 130 miles away and over a mountain pass that is so notorious for bad winter storms that it is named after one of the largest groups of people to get trapped there during a winter storm and die there (Donner Pass wasn't named after the reindeer). And DeJoy is pretending that this isn't going to impact reliability.

We've identified the issues. What's our solution? This is a legitimate question. I'm deeply invested in our wellbeing. DeJoy is appointed by the board of governors so leaderships change at the top is a challenge. Could USPS be reverted to be unincorporated receive tax dollars? The openings of RPDCs have been less than stellar and our rural communities are bearing the brunt the 10 year plan. The USPS has its issues and they need to be addressed.

Ironic that it takes the Post Office to prove that government is NOT a business & thus can not be run like a bussiness because it similar to all other jobs the government preforms it has different deliverables. Like my night & day different, where one focuses exclusivly on profit, the other focuses on providing a service & while A+ service is possible in the business world, service in it's self is just a means to an ends & not an end unto it's self, which is why Bussinessmen will always fail at public policy.
