i always assumed pyro just showed up one day and they couldn't get rid of them. i'm pretty sure that canonically pyro's flamethrower is homemade, so that kinda plays into this idea

The part where Soldier was talking about "always knowing it" actually refers to him "always knowing the plane they were next to was filled with honey." Pyro's gender is still unknown, but there have been a lot of theories about Pyro being a woman because of stuff like "I fear no man... but that thing... it scares me" (in reference to Pyro), so the tf2 comics team threw in some jokes to make us question it more (hence the Soldier line, which once again is confirmed later that Soldier wasn't talking about Pyro, and also the tfc Pyro being female)

The part where Soldier was talking about "always knowing it" actually refers to him "always knowing the plane they were next to was filled with honey." Pyro's gender is still unknown, but there have been a lot of theories about Pyro being a woman because of stuff like "I fear no man... but that thing... it scares me" (in reference to Pyro), so the tf2 comics team threw in some jokes to make us question it more (hence the Soldier line, which once again is confirmed later that Soldier wasn't talking about Pyro, and also the tfc Pyro being female)
Pyro is not a woman. Pyro is not a man and the word man doesnt always mean male. This argument must end. Developers obviously doesnt want anyone to know its gender. If you ask a developer he is going to say he is designed in a genderless way. The tfc pyro being female doesnt have anything to do with tf2 pyro. It changes almost nothing about the fact that we dont know his gender. We will never know it. Gaben wont come out and say its a woman. Worthless argument, i wish people nowadays were able to think deeper about things, critical thinking is dead. Everybody just expects some resource or theory to give them the truth but nobody is looking carefully to see that he is designed genderless on purpose, if you just look at small words like 'he' or 'man' you won't get anywhere and it will confuse yourself a lot. Pyro is the mangle of TF2, and you can’t convince me otherwise.
With the fact that Pauling even refers to Pyro with male terms and due to how much deeper his voice is (yes I know about the whole thing with the gas mask and how the material the suit is made out of can affect his voice), but keeping this mentally along with the build that Pyro has (keep in mind, practically every single female in the comics still has that shape in their chest to signalize the breasts) And yet Pyro lacks that.
So with the voice, his build, and from what Pauling says. Frankly I’d say it makes the most sense for Pyro to be a male.
…also because valve has stated that they’ll never add female characters to tf2 which straight up implys (all of the 9 Mercs are male, even Pyro.)
