  • Danny Steyn wins his 3rd STL SCCA National Runoffs Championship Title, this time at Indy, in rainy wet conditions. None of the drivers had ever turned a lap on the Indy Road Course in the wet, so there was a lot of experimentation, exploring the various lines and braking points, looking for the limits of adhesion. Plus a lot of tentative driving so as not to overcook the turns or braking points and end up in the gravel traps.
Steyn also won the prestigious SCCA Super Sweep Award for the 2nd time, which is presented to drivers who win a U.S. Majors Tour Conference Championship, a Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour Nationwide Points Championship, and the National Championship Runoffs race, all in a single class.
Danny Steyn races SCCA and NASA events in both Spec Miata and Super Touring Lite cars. His cars are prepared by OPM Autosports, his SM is powered by Rossini Racing Engines, his STL is powered by Nelson Racing Engines, and both cars are stopped courtesy G-Loc Brake Pads, with contingency support from Hoosier Racing Tire, Toyo Tires and Mazda Motorsports. Support from Ocean Machinery, Peddinghaus Corporation and AGT Robotics.

Gawie, at least on the ice, when you mess up, there are no serious consequences! Here messing up would have meant giving up the win, and so I drove very conservatively, until the cool down lap!! Then I tried to let it all hang out but there was way more grip than I expected, so it was pretty lame!!!

Crazy how much grip you had getting back to throttle. Good drive and Thanks for the rain lesson 👍

Thanks John, much appreciated. I think we were all very surprised by how much grip we had in the rain, and especially on the dry racing line. No polished aggregate, no oily patches, only really sketchy places were the shallow puddles around the track, a small shallow river across T5, and deep puddles where the banking met the flat track - around T11 and T13.. And on the cool down lap I was really trying to drift the car, but there was so much grip that it made it tough to keep the drift going.
