While rivals like the Land Rover Discovery 4 have moved upmarket, the Shogun has kept its tyres firmly in the off-road camp. It's virtually unstoppable, and it has built up a loyal customer base that appreciates its dependability and strength.
You do pay for that rugged ability on the road, where the Shogun feels coarse and agricultural to drive compared to its sophisticated rivals. It undercuts them on price though, and there's no denying it looks good. Inside it's spacious, with seats for seven in the long-wheelbase model, but the interior exhibits its rugged focus, with lots of hard and shiny plastics.
I would choose reliability over luxury at any given time. This vehicles are build to be a tank.
I have driven my 2006 Pajero from new. Just short 350,000km it's still going strong. My wife also has a new Pajero. For the presenter to say that this Veh is uncomfortable on the road is not true. Granted it's not a luxury car, but it is comfortable to drive. Living in the Middle East, we regularly take them off road, be it on the sand or in the hills, it has never let me down.
so many car reviewers give this car low ratings because they basically don't understand that this is a utility vehicle.. It is not designed to go to school everyday... its designed to tow, boats, aeroplanes and just about anything that can be put on a trailer not to mention cross deserts, mud and mountains!!
Funny how Land Rover and Toyota can do all of those but with the added comfort and luxury people associate with large SUVs. Don't get me wrong, the Pajero is good. But not admitting that it has a lot of shortcomings compared to it's rivals is just bullcrap.
Well, maybe because it's an *ancient* car with an early 1990s parts?

Very true. Car reviewers don’t “get” 4wds and it drives me nuts. They criticise them for their lack of ability to cleanly take a 50kmh bend at 60kmh without feeling like a huge chuck of vehicle. Hello!! A Pajero is very car like too with its “lack of” independent suspension front & rear for buyers who want a 4wd without the ability of a 4wd.
After injury in the army, was moved to a position of a field driver for a general. He was issued a shiny new Shogun, with a special bulletproof body. Maaan, this SUV rocks. Drove it for last three months of service, was awesome.

I've never understood the objection to that beautiful sound that a nice diesel motor gifts you. Having owned several Land Rovers the poor finish and unreliability was the absolute killer. TBH at times I prayed for the Landy's diesel motor to please make some noise. Any noise!!! Sadly the only sound was that of the tow truck. True story. :(
A true word from you Bill. Pajero's (Montero/Shogun) durability is just legendary. Love them.
Trust me, those shoguns have best diesel engine noise in its class.... (my opinion anyway)
Over here in Australia, it's called the Pajero. It seems odd to see Shotgun written on it.
We in Africa, don't mind about cabin noise , we used to that all the time ,infact we sit in more noisy cars than the pajero and care less , here pajero is a Gem 💎
this is a man's car!!!in africa forget about land rover's, forget about mercedes ML or GL's, forget about bimmers etc...only mitsu, toyotas and nissan REALLY work back there!!!

The Pajero is just as nice to ride on the road as it is offroad. That is what I think of the Pajero 2009.
This car is a beast and also considered a luxury car in many 3rd world countries.

In Mexico it’s called the Montero, others the Pajero. I kind of wish Mitsubishi would just pick a name and run with it!

A good couple of years has passed since this review and somehow this dated but trusted construction seems to grow. We see all these modern “better” competitors lacking reliability and loosing comfort over the years. 2.0 diesel in XC90 or “trusty” Disco? Really!? You must be joking.

Didnt know that.. here in Philippines that is called Pajero but there is another mitsubishi car called Montero or Montero Sport.. :)
I am driving this car from last 10 months.....here it is called as PAJERO....it is value for money..far far better than other European Crabs....!!!!

Ok i really dont understand, the engine is noisy when your driving alone or with a few passengers but NOT when ur off roading or towing heavy stuff? Say what? :0
Are landrovers really more comfortable ?? Do they handle better on road?? No...... this is the only thing they try to cling onto as they know full well mitsubishi make a much better vehicle

In the U.S is called Montero, but the engine is manufactured by pontiac, it has low quality. Best are in Europe, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and of course, Japan.
It's how she emphasised the "and a half" statement as if it was very important for everyone to remember.

I have no idea why it's called Shogun in the UK but I do know that Pajero means "wanker" in Spanish.

Though the Middle seat because it has got has much cushioning as the other seats after a 5 hour journey . My back was breaking!
Why would someone buy this rather than a Toyota Landcruiser? Both are no nonsense, similarly priced (expensive), rugged and reliable. To me the elephant in the room (not mentioned here) is the Landcruiser.
Main reason is that the Pajero is less expensive than the Toyota.

Haha "HUGE 3.2L [engine]!" That's funny cause here in the US, a 5.0 isn't really very big at all.
I have a lwb and the ride is brilliant so don't agree with this review. Also don't find the engine too noisy. I like a bit of grunt anyway
Negatives for the Shogun by Mitsubishi:
Only really happy when either off road or towing.
The engine is noisy and the ride is uncomfortable.
It chooses not to be quiet, or absorb lumps and bumps.
Not as refined as a Land Rover Discovery.

Omgness really a shogun! It's gigantic the car!
Don't know, but the japanese have serious problems choosing names for the European/American Market. But now Opel, which is German, is also having problems: the Opel Mokka is supposed to remind us of coffee, but here in Portugal, Mokka is like when you smoke marijuana.
Rebecca talks so different on telegraph cars too the point I struggle to handle watching her reviews its so annoying. She talks in a much better way on carbuyer videos

The pajero here in philippines is about $60k USD that 2.7m phil peso and theres a better car called montero sports here and its $40k USD thats 1.7m peso but the montero sports here have a better diesel engine 2.5L VGT diesel better than that 3.2L. I think you should try that montero sports.. :) and yead cars are very expensive here in phils

It is more reliable to Land-rover discovery.
It is not as fine as a landrover discovery, noisy engine and stiff suspension system

It´s a facelift version? Because otherwise I don´t understand why you test it now? I drove with predecessor for 2 year and I hate this car. It´s noisy, slow, for 99% time too big, got terrible handling and the consumption is bad too- average 11l/100km (21mpg).
To complete Runawaydu- yes, Shogun in UK, Pajero in EU, but in Spain it´s Montero.. Guess why :)

I hired a Mitsubishi SUV once - seriously toxic smell from the interior.
I'd be hesitant about buying one and breathing that all the time.
