How to change the color of the SEAT STITCHING on my C8 Corvette Z06! | Dyeing the threads

- I wanted to make a HOW TO video on this modification, and it was a scary modification! I wanted orange accents on my blue car. I ordered the orange seat belts so I had to dye the stitching orange to match.
So here I go with only $5 in supplies and many many many MANY hours.
The C8 Z06 is a beautiful machine and this takes the interior to the next level.

I was gonna say something bad for doing this to a 100k+ car, but it looks really good at the end i cant lie.
Thanks! And I actually wouldn’t blame you for having that opinion! It was a stressful decision for sure.
Looks amazing. Contrast stitching is such a nice touch and can be ridiculously pricey in some cases from the factory. Great work!
Yeah it makes a huge difference. But I imagine they know that if it takes 20 hours to complete the job, then they can charge a lot
Thank you for this video ,I bought the Marvy markers in yellow for my 2024 , 3lz . I ordered black interior with sky cool grey seats , yellow seat belts and accelerate yellow exterior . Because of the grey seats I was unable to get the yellow stitching . I followed your instructions and the result was amazing . Thanks again .
That’s awesome! So glad you got some value 🙏
I thought about doing this to my SHELBY GT500 White Stitching. Changing it to RED. Great Video bro.
Thank you. It will take a LOT of patience
WHEW. man you have more patience than me....looks good!
Thanks Rick! For sure this tested my patience 😅
Man, that looks really good! I mean, great! I just bought a C7 ZRI 3ZR/ZTK from the original owner that had 3145 miles on it. The car is shadow gray with black interior and would have looked so much better if it had been ordered with blue top stitch. That was only like a $495 add back then and makes such a huge difference. I am not the guy you described with patience and steady hands so I will leave mine as is. But wow! I am impressed with the job you did and how well it all comes together.
Thank you 🙏
Labor of love, thanks for showing, bigger project than I would have imagined.
Yes, it was a big project. Just about any other mod could be done in less man hours. But being able do it myself in the driveway for $5. Priceless.
That is a GREAT JOB! Your attention to detail, step by step. The color contrast works...it works!! Sometimes you have to be bold enough to step out! Enjoy your beautiful ride!😊 Maybe you have to just hold the marker on the stitch for a few seconds to let the stitch soak up the ink on the stubborn ones.
Thanks for the kind words. This was the plan all along so I knew what I was getting myself into 😁. I tried to let us “soak” in and it just doesn’t flow from the market like a fountain pen so that didn’t work. I kinda wish it did
😂homie is really sharpie'ing his car.
I love it. 😂
Well not a sharpie, it’s a dye marker. But yes I love it too
Been doing this to my Amplify Orange Stingray. I used Windex and a disposable blue shop towel. The blue shop towel has better accuracy and won’t smear the work you have just done.
Don’t use the Neon Sharpie pens, they glow under black light, but it fades QUICK! I used a UV resident marker. Not sure I would try this with the Alcantara.
Yeah I didn’t see good things about the sharpie neon/fluorescent pens. These seemed to have the best feedback online. Good luck with your project. It’s a beast
Gorgeous car looks awesome
Thank you
I did my 2022 C8 with orange sharpie fabric markers, the dash faded the first day in the sun. Had to redo it. And yes I posted it on Corvette forum.
Oh man that’s a bummer. I have not seen any fading yet on mine.
After redoing it, how has it been holding up? So basically doing 2-3 layers will just make it last longer?
Wow! Thank you. Great idea😮
Yeah it’s a lot of work, but it’s great!
Wow, looks great! I thought about doing something very similar to mine once I receive it and had been looking online for ideas. Some have used fabric markers and some said, Sharpie's work best. I'm still researching ideas, but damn glad I got to see how much work goes into this from your video.
Be well...
-Shane
yeah I've seen sharpies. It's probably easier to lay down the dye with a sharpie, but I wouldn't dare use a normal sharpie because you'd permanently mark the leather. I think they make a fabric-like marker as well, so that may work ok. But I also saw they were "fluorescent", which I wanted to match the darker orange on the seatbelts. I just saw good reviews of these markers from others doing the same project so that's why I chose them. The only thing that I learned was different is I heard some people say that the threads "soak up" the ink...not at all. You really have to lay it down, so that's why it takes so long and can get messy.
@@SupercarRanch thank you! Good to know from someone who has tackled this already and has good first hand knowledge!
It looks great BTW!
-Shane
@@SupercarRanch How's the Orange 🧡 color holding up? Any fading issues so far?
How does the color match up to the seatbelts?
Thanks
-Shane
never knew I could do that to my car, just ordered some pens to do it. It was a detail that was bugging me so much
Awesome. Good luck 👍
Thank you Tim Bradford
Fantastic work man 👍 just wanted to ask , does the colour fade at some point ? I’d love to do mine in blue but concerned that the sun will just ruin the colour after a month or so.
Always keep nice cars out of the sun
let us know how the color holds up! i want to do red stitching in my C8
So far so good but it doesn’t get much sunlight in the garage
Supercar. It’s been now two months, how is the color holding up? Did u use a basic color or a fluorescent color?
Thanks
@@Texas_Clay so far no issues at all. I used basic colors. The pens I used are linked in the description of the video. I wouldn't recommend the fluorescent colors as they don't seem to match the colors of the car.
Great video got the markers on the way but dose anyone know if you use (leather care - Armor care - with bees wax) if the marker will come off???? Also I have white leather in some parts do you think I should do it?
I would for sure not use them soon after the work. But after it sets in, I’m not sure how it will perform. I don’t use those materials often though. And on the white/grey leather I don’t know if I’d recommend this project. I’m really not sure if the overage will stain.
Thanks so much!
On the subject of customizing, can one order say an E Ray with red dipped interior 3LZ pay extra money to override colors and get the red dipped Alcanterra steering wheel as seen on certain RUclips channels or Google?
Good question. I do not believe so. I think that steering wheel was only on some prototype cars that chevy had in their reveal videos, but I don’t think that option made it to production
What would you do if they already came colored. For example my car came with red stitching so I tried to add blue (on a small spot so I didn’t mess it up) but it just turned black. So I’m thinking I have to take it to an upholstery shop to change it unless there is another way?
I would not recommend. You’re just mixing red plus blue. It doesn’t paint over the thread, it dyes the thread. So if you want to full change red to blue, yeah you’d have to get the seat covers fully restitched. If you do end up doing that, let me know how much it costs. Cause if it isn’t crazy, I may do that next time considering how long this took!
Any thoughts on doing this on alcantara stitching? I’m afraid the color might absorb into the alcantara and discolor the black material around the stitching before I can wipe it off
I would not recommend trying it in alcantara. But I’ve never tried it. You can get a pen and test it out in a place that is not very visible.
@@SupercarRanch UPDATE: tested it on an black alcantara shift knob with white threads and any overshot was wiped off with very little to no discoloration to the alcantara. Will update tomorrow again with what it looks like in natural sunlight.
That’s good to hear 👍
My idea is a two toned black and natural interior with red stitching. I wonder if red marker on natural leather might not wipe off as well as on the black. Other problem might be if the tan stitching did not dye as well as off white stitching. Actually I was hoping that Chevy might for a charge just use the red stitching as if they were doing an all black interior...why not? The other exotic manufacturers will do it. I would also want the steering wheel to have the red marker rather than tan.
It should come off, but I would be very wary of using the markers on ran or light colored leather just in case there is any light residual left on it.
I agree that I really wish they offered more configurations like adding colored stitching to anything if someone is willing to pay.
Heard you bought a new z06? How did the stitching hold up?
Also heard on octane hour u wouldn’t do it again? What is your regret?
I am thinking about doing this on my C8. Wish i could pick ur brain.
Any thoughts are appreciated
I learned a few things after living with it for a while. It will fade if it is parked out in the sun and you don’t have UV tint. But if you park in the garage or have tint all around plus windshield then you should be fine. Plus when I was touching up I learned a trick to break the marker and soak a q tip, then run the q tip on the threads. That worked waaaaay better and was faster. So if I did it again, I’d do it that way.
I wonder how many dealerships have dont this and chrged 10k for custom stiching..? 😂
how does it hold up, does it stain when you touch it or thats not a issue after i dryes ? :D
It holds up well never had it rub off on clothes. I did a second deeper coat a couple months later and it helped a lot. I sold the car, but it’s on a used car lot right now and still looks great in their pics.
the areas that were hard to do were dirty. If you notice its only places that you would be actually touching, so maybe just a good cleaning before and it would solve that!
I considered that and did clean it, but not with any degreasing agent. maybe some oils were present. But considering it was only the interior seat threads and I’d never had anyone ever in the passenger seat, my suspicion was that there was either a dealer porter cleaned it with some protectant or the thread used in that section from the factory has a scotch-guard like infusion to prevent staining.
@@SupercarRanch ahh i gotcha haha yea i was just guessing! I just did the same thing to my mustang and even cleaning it with strong degreaser it was doing the same as in your video!
nice
Thank you
Does it last long or do you have to keep dying it after certain period of time?
Can't you customize the stitching from factory???
With the 3LT/Z option you can select yellow or red stitching if you have black interior. Or if you get red interior on any trim level you get red stitching. Otherwise, you don’t get any other stitching options from the factory
Patient
do you think it could be done on sky cool gray or think it would dye the leather?
The marker should wipe right off, but I’m honestly not sure. I’d be a little more worried some residual might stain the grey seats. Try at your own risk.
You could have sharpened the tips to make it more pointy and get into the stitch holes easily.
Never considered that, but that also would have taken longer with the coverage of the market. If I do it again one day, I’ll try that and see what happens.
Not crazy about the orange, blue would look better!
I wanted the blue and orange contrast. Blue on blue is too common.
What type of marker is that?
Wait, nvm 😅
Glad you figured it out 😁
why would a light blue car get orange stitchs?😅😂
I don’t know. Ask Porsche, Ford, Lamborghini, McLaren, Aston Martin and others who pair these colors 🤷♂️
Because it looks awesome!
Technically blue and orange are contrasting & therefore complimenting colors, on the color wheel 🤓 they make each other “pop”.
In theory it doesn’t sound good, but the proof is in the pudding. I think it looks great.
