I have been working on this a lot since your series on serving targets. I am playing with guys at mostly 4.5 with several 5.0 level players too, who are real strong baseliners and returners, and I can't tell you how many times each time out it happens that I go maybe down the T and miss it, and come back with a tight hard spin into the body that they set up to crank one on, but wind up hooking it into the side fence or someplace. I just think it is really tough for players who have not had extensive coaching to wait long enough to see the bounce of that spinning, kicking ball and still be able to get their racket around on the shot.
Great! As a lefty I love slicing to my opponent's backhand (if they hit right) most people return that cross court so the returns are pretty predictable to anticipate too. Great video Love that u keep them short.
Hi Brady, just a small suggestion. I think these tutorials, though valuable, would make for better viewing if you were doing a voiceover during a montage of the shots you're discussing. I often end up turning off the video before you give a practical example because I find you standing and talking into the camera for four minutes a bit much. Some great tips, nothing disrespectful - just a suggestion. Also, where are you playing? The view is superb.
Thanks Joe! Yes I do that sometimes. I also always try to keep the videos around 5 minutes due to our limited attention spans these days. I film on the north side of LA.
Since I've stopped playing indoors and I'm playing in the wnd, my serve has gone to pot. Bad toss and changing my technique as advised by online coaches has messed up my serve.
There's more than one way to hit a serve, just make sure you have the fundamentals down. Having a good toss is mandatory and I wouldn't work on much else on the serve until you get it figured out. Here's a video I did on the toss, hope it helps: ruclips.net/video/LP8zRXcBSrY/видео.html
+Wesley Martin Absolutely not. Flat serves definitely have its place, especially if it's a strength of yours. Hitting with spin will complement your flat serve and can also produce angles that flat serves cannot.
i have a friend that only does flat serves, and i can rarely predict it's direction. flat serves are muchos faster lmao. howevet, harder to get into the box
Perhaps you might want to change perspective : the base of your choice of serve changes when you go up the ranks. Going by your own strength is good, having the versatility to expose the weaknesses of your opponents is better. And if you meet someone with slow reactions a good ol' flat one might just do the trick. I observed this in my league where all players hit kick all day long + topspin during rallies. Just one guy goes flat and produces extremely low slices off both bh and fh - and noone is near to his winning record...
The top 4.0 in the whole country used a flat serve serve on his first serve. Its very hard to defend against because of the angle and power@@heikospahn3061
Got to say it, IMO Brady is the best coach certainly on youtube. A natural. Thanks for all your video’s across many areas of the game.
Appreciate that Phil!

We all collectively hate playing lefties--even lefties hate playing lefties.

So if I understand this video a flat serve is absolutely useless and should I hit spin, kick and slice serves the whole match. Right????
