I think if they had actually made Tedros another musician it would make a lot of sense. Jocelyn is the sweet pop idol and he's the darker, edgier artist and as the two become entangled, everyone realizes that Tedros is not only an idol, but a leader to a group of devotees and when Jocelyn realizes how dangerous he is, its too late to get out and her and the team would have to figure out how to separate them and expose his past so that his fanbase would turn on him and his relationship with Jocelyn would dissolve, leaving her as the true "Idol" while also giving us a complex and dangerous story.

From the first episode it gave me the impression that this is an ego project for Lilly Rose Depp, Abel and Sam Levinson. Sam Levinson loves to be over the top and exploitative, especially with violence, manipulation, toxicity sexual scenes and nudity, Abel has the same thematic past with his music and they both love to be artsy fartsy and edgy so it felt to them like a match made in Heaven. Film and music by Abel and he also get’s to act and produce. Lilly has benefited massively from being a nepo baby in all industries especially in fashion, the place were people hailed her as a edgier Chanel girl and generally edgy, which she totally bought into. I remember her almost playing the same sort of character as in edgy but snarky in the ego nepotism daddy project Yoga Hosers. I mean I was not even suprised that these 3 individuals created and promoted such a “masterpiece”. A wasted potential, a wasted talented cast behind them, all wasted. Is it any wonder the first female director was booted? They are living their fantasies through this show but it’s not even close to enough to make it a decent show.

I just love how none of the supporting characters had any executing for their motivations. Like Xander did what Tedros told him to do in episode 4, and basically framed a famous actor for rape with a picture and an accusation. And then Xander ends up worshiping Jocelyn in the finale episode? With one of the most random and idiotic twists ever written!
This show is so terrible, it’s almost good. 😂

@@goated3285i still don’t understand the people saying she’s “just as bad or worse” than him… like i get that the show wants you to think that by the end, but nothing in the actual content of the show demonstrates that to the audience? like… she lied about the abuse and used tedros for creative inspiration. and… what else? didn’t let jenny’s character release the song that was originally hers? didn’t let troye’s character sing (though he said that was her mom’s doing, so…)? i guess she manipulated everyone around her but i’m not sure what she manipulated them into doing since she kept getting told no by her team the whole time until she came up with some profitable music of her own and finally won them over, which… does not scream manipulative cunning to me, that’s just plain old straightforward work. did she make people believe her mom and tedros were abusing her? but if she never went public with her mom’s abuse and people on her team were still harsh and said no to her anyway, what sympathy did she really gain? why didn’t she use it to profit artistically sooner and in a less convoluted way if that was her plan? like it doesn’t really show us what her big evil plan was.
then there’s tedros, who has literally kidnapped, physically abused, and pimped out women in the past in addition to grooming vulnerable and underaged people within his cult, and he’s supposed to be… equally or less evil than her? or as sam said, “the real victim” all along? like… idgi

If Joss was a master manipulator for a few years, the message of the show is completely different from promised. Joss was a teenage villain, and teen/young women in the industry are THE PLAGUE. Really? Those teens and young women are destroying the lives of ‘helpless’ powerful old men (or women) in that world. That is NOT the tune of all the apologists of the show. Girls are the menace??? Ok, if that’s the plot, frame it as an anomaly. All and all, the apologists are the ones who 'didn't get it ' apparently, all this time. WOMEN AND GIRLS are the evil unleashed. F… you, Levinston! (Yup, I’m copy/pasting this comment everywhere 🙂 )

I honestly would want the first episode to be the second so we can see snippets of Jocelyn's childhood, career beginnings and rise to fame then cut a couple years later to the photoshoot so the audience can pick up that she is in her bad girl phase. Tedros should have been like his original iteration where he looks clean cut and sharply dressed. The finale should have covered the six weeks of Jocelyn's successful comeback and Tedros getting his life crumbled.

The Idol is this generation's Showgirls: they were trying to tell a serious story about the dark side of show business but ended up a cringey mess. Both feature a young actress baring it all thinking that she'll be taken seriously as an actress. I will say I think Lily did a good job and if anything Abel gave the Nomi Malone performance. Both feature laughable sex scenes and terrible dialogue and nonsensical plot points. I just wonder if The Idol will become a cult classic like Showgirls.
