If any of this is true, it shows a remarkable capacity for self-reflection, because he's basically saying he's the evil one, driven to it by circumstances and decisions that seemed good to him at the time.
it isn´t true

Til now he became the very thing he swore to Destroy.

Best SW analysis I've seen in a long time, long time. It is very interesting to try to see what creator of work of art is trying to express.
There are unavoidable personal parallels with art, at least when art has a singular creative voice. It creates another fasinating layer of symbolism whether consiously created or out of artists subconsious mind.
"What an artist wants to say?" is much more interesting field for analysis than arguing for lore, canon or other such details.
I haven't even watched this yet, and I agree 100%. I've always believed that Star Wars is a story about all of us. I grew up without a father, lived in poverty with my disabled mother in northern california, was extremely skilled with electronics at a young age, and was eventually mentored by someone who saw my gift. Funny enough, I've been called "Padawan" since I was 17. Through my skill, I learned patience, control and forged a path for myself. When my mother died in my early 20's, I was faced with an option. To give in to my anger and pain, or to channel it the best way I knew how- Through my craft. I chose the later. Traveled the world, married a woman I met in Paris, and lived the best life I could. I didn't see Star Wars until 2 years ago, at 32yrs old after my wife and I separated. That Padawan nickname meant nothing to me until it meant everything.
My story is far from unique, and only through retrospect could I see how all the pieces fit together. I never let the size of my goals discourage me. I always believed in the impossible, and through that self belief, I made my dreams come true. While it would have been great to have grown up with Star Wars, it makes me incredibly happy to know that these stories exist. Call it the force, God or love- When you do what you truly love, you are creating and spreading the energy that binds all living beings together. Dream big, and take action. Do.
I just thought of one additional parallel between Anakin and George seen in the Phantom Menace. Anakin pilots a YELLOW Naboo fighter. Same color as his youth car.
and the Anakin's Jedi Starfighter in Revenge of the Sith is yellow. Wow this is starting to track.
I dated a girl in Los Angeles who’s dad was first cousin with George. I dated her for two years. She never met him, but did write a letter of recommendation for my girlfriend to help her get a manager/agents.
Cool story bro

Ayyyy! I feel fortunate to be one of the lucky few to have first experienced this topic of discussion & video at the live show! Well done Ryan, Colton, Doug & the ScreenCrush team!
Glad you liked the peak behind the curtain and thanks so much for being there!
I for one think the Prequels are of high quality... They may not have been the films everyone expected them to be, as George already recognized that while making them, but they are of very high quality. The man pioneered the technology to create them! He's the one who really pushed the boundary and reinvented special effects for film and utilized CGI in a way no one else could've dreamed of. Full of thematics and symbolism (read The Archives 1999-2005 for more on this)... Crafted a Shakespearean-esque tragedy of a man trying to do good and falling to darkness... A constitutional republic falling to a dictatorship empire... A vast expansion of lore and lush, vibrant, highly detailed exotic planets... And the lightsaber duels on display in the prequels are by far the very best we've ever seen and likely ever will again. Whether you believe what the "true" meaning of these films are... There's definitely an argument to be had on their layered genius and vast high quality. They're not as simplistic as the OT, and there's nothing wrong with the OT being more simple and straightforward, but the prequels are fantastic.
Watch Rick Worley- why the prequels are better films than you deserve
@@kaimarquez8046 will do!
@@kaimarquez8046 just watched it... Loved it! Also enjoy the ripping apart of the narrow-minded views of hacks like Chris Stuckman and RLM haha. Thanks for leading me to that video! I've been a lifelong Prequel defender and I'm glad to see more and more people come to fully understand them for what they are and appreciate them more fully. People should really look into Paul Duncan's archives book (1999-2005). Star Wars is 1-6 and it's George's mythology and world... We're just granted a glance into it.
As a child, I always preferred the prequel trilogy. I never understood the criticism, and seeing them get the reevaluation they deserve is so gratifying.
George Lucas’s Star Wars prequels are a pure masterpiece, a magnificent, exciting, and incredibly rich work that has greatly contributed to the story, universe, characters, lore, and mythology of Star Wars. They are the greatest movies-a thrilling, cult classic trilogy from beginning to end. These are the Star Wars movies George Lucas always intended to make, and they are the best, most complete, and richest of all the Star Wars trilogies. Everything is superb: the deepening of the Star Wars universe and its narrative elements is stunning and engaging. The detailed exploration of the Clone Wars, a pivotal moment in Star Wars history, is fascinating. The period of the Clone Wars is the best era in the Star Wars saga.
The gripping storyline develops throughout the films, with the rise of Palpatine (Darth Sidious) portrayed masterfully. His behind-the-scenes machinations to undermine the Galactic Republic and bring the galaxy under his control are meticulously shown. His manipulation to create a massive clone army and wipe out the Jedi with Order 66 is central to the story, explaining how the Galactic Empire came to be after the fall of the Republic and how Anakin turned to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. Anakin’s fall, driven by his desire to save those he loved, is tragic and profound. His transformation into Darth Vader is a breathtaking, iconic scene. The connection to the original trilogy is seamlessly handled. Anakin’s internal conflict-torn between his loyalty to the Jedi Order and his desire to protect those he loves-makes his story deep and tragic. Key moments such as his confrontation with Count Dooku and his heartbreaking final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar heighten the drama.
The prequels also brought invaluable depth to the Star Wars universe, offering detailed insight into the Jedi Order, the training of Padawans, the Sith, and Jedi teachings. The focus on the Sith and their philosophy strengthened the dark side of the Force, adding layers of depth and complexity to the saga.
The political aspect of the prequel trilogy introduces a new dimension to Star Wars, with Palpatine’s machinations in the Galactic Senate and the growing tensions between planetary systems, creating a richer context for the events of the Original Trilogy-the rise of the Empire, the fall of the Republic, the extinction of the Jedi, and the tragic story of Anakin Skywalker.
The expansion of the Star Wars universe is also amazing, with new planets, races, creatures, and cultures. The introduction of Dug, Gungans, Toydarians, Kaminoans, the underwater city, the Queen’s palace, the Galactic Senate, the cloning facility, and planets like Naboo and Coruscant-all of which are among the best-help create a larger, more diverse world. Iconic locations such as Kamino, Geonosis, Utapau, Felucia, and Mustafar provide visually captivating settings for action scenes, plot development, and key moments in the story. The trilogy also gave us legendary characters like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, General Grievous, Jango Fett, and more.
The action scenes and lightsaber battles are some of the most memorable in the saga. Epic battles such as the Battle of Geonosis, the podrace on Tatooine, the Battle of Naboo, and the Battle over Coruscant are iconic, visually stunning, and filled with emotional stakes, involving characters we’ve grown to love. Lightsaber duels between legendary figures like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul, and Yoda are executed with exceptional choreography, adding visceral energy to the story. The duel on Naboo, the clash with Count Dooku, Yoda’s fight with Darth Sidious in the Senate, Darth Maul’s encounter, and the tragic brotherly battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin are unforgettable.
These episodes also enriched Star Wars lore with charismatic new characters, unforgettable music like 'Duel of the Fates,' 'Across the Stars,' and 'Battle of the Heroes,' a fascinating and expansive mythology, and a cast of talented actors, including Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Liam Neeson.
Natalie Portman is stunning, graceful, and charismatic as Padmé Amidala, queen and senator of Naboo. She brings strength, determination, and courage to her role, evolving from a queen to a senator and eventually into a strong, elegant, and determined woman-a central feature of the trilogy.
Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson deliver a classy and memorable presence onscreen, and their dynamic as Jedi Masters is palpable, conveying wisdom and resolve that ground the story in Jedi heritage. Christopher Lee’s presence as Count Dooku adds a touch of class, elegance, and charisma, enhanced by his Shakespearean delivery.
The Star Wars prequels were the revival of the Star Wars saga, bringing real dramatic weight, political context, meaningful stakes, new and iconic characters, and thrilling action scenes. They vastly expanded the Star Wars universe, making it more diverse and richly developed, with a lore that perfectly complements the Original Trilogy and is inseparable from it.
These Star Wars episodes are masterpieces that form an incredible whole, a single, exceptional galactic epic. It is the story of Anakin Skywalker-from his training as a Jedi to his fall to the dark side, and ultimately his redemption in saving his son, destroying the Sith, and bringing balance to the Force. It’s also the story of the Galactic Empire, once a democratic Republic, and Palpatine’s rise from senator to emperor of the galaxy-his manipulation to secure his authority in the Senate, create his own Empire, destroy the Jedi Order, and keep Anakin as his apprentice. Furthermore, this trilogy marked a major advancement in digital filmmaking, modern technologies, editing, and special effects, allowing the creation of new worlds, incredible world-building, and the extraordinary narrative of the Star Wars prequels. Like Avatar, it is a vast, rich, and unlimited universe that explores new planets, civilizations, technologies, and worlds.
This trilogy is the greatest, more far-reaching, more fantastc, in Star Wars, as George Lucas was able to build his universe exactly as he envisioned it. Without the prequels, the Star Wars universe would not be as interesting, vast, developed, or as exciting and rich as it is today.

It goes without saying that I’ll probably never watch the prequels the same way again. Mind.Blown.🤯
Having been through some rough relationships, and seeing the life I had worked so hard for more or less implode, I suddenly identify more with Anakin’s agony as he lay on the volcanic sand, limbless and burning.
I guess that explains why Star Wars is a space soap opera
You can’t understand Star always without understanding George Lucas.

Holy smokes incredible analysis. Thank you for this gives me an entirely different perspective on Star Wars. I think the personal touch George always put in his work is why so many of us love it so much.
Ok, in all the stories of far fetched ludicrous breakdowns that are reading waaaay too faaar ahead to hit too close to home, I think this one is your absolute best one to date !
Awesometacular !
So with that point of view, then the OT was his idealistic path, what he dreamed how all things will end for him and the prequel trilogy was his realistic path, how he lost what he loved most by his ambition.
No one has crapped on the prequels since the Disney acquisition and their abomination of a sequel trilogy heightened Lucas’ genius even further. Even the Phantom Menace was redeemable. Just we don’t like certain parts of Ep.1 and 2 doesn’t mean we don’t love the prequels. …If you wondering, yes, it’s Jar Jar. Love Ahmed Best but Jar Jar is a secret Sith Lord.
The Star Wars prequels are amazing.
I really like when you look at these films as metaphors. Only viewing them as nerdy lore takes away the power of art as self-expression and social commentary. Lore is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
This was so well done
A common statement says “every story is at its core an autobiography.”
Grew up in Modesto and know a fair deal of Lucas’ backstory. You nailed the metaphor very well, I think.
my dude, Ryan, this is a brilliant thesis.

I know there have been a lot of shows and you've been doing a lot of breakdowns so you haven't had a lot of time for videos like this. But I'm glad you made the time. This is great stuff.
about George Lucas’s Divorce - The video Essay made in Toys-Story 4 was good to work on the last movie to be in like he did is not Darth Vader If any of this is true, it shows a remarkable capacity for self-reflection because he's basically saying he's the evil one, driven to it by circumstances and decisions that seemed good to him at the time. 25 minutes ago

Makes total sense...but Lucas is an ideas guy. He should never have written and directed the Prequels himself. But that's SO Anakin. lol 45 minutes ago I liked the Star Wars prequels like many, was my Childhood...is as great as the original series of course not ... Oates hasn’t changed, but Hall looks weird Just like anything, an argument can be made here for both for and against. The main problem is that George is on record as having described his initial plan for Star Wars to be 3 series of 3 films each. He specifically said that he had the idea of explaining where Darth Vader came from. The problem is, he didn't specify much so your theory is as good as any. Thanks to Ryan, Harriet, Randolf, Brianna, Lee, Ashley, and Paulina! Ryan, that was awesome. Nicely researched and fascinating. The world's great leaps are driven by the personal initiative of geniuses, and Lucas is one of those.
17:47 And this is why i will ALWAYS love the Prequels ❤️ tha fact that he created something where Hollywood or any outside executives like Disney would NEVER touch on is what makes the Prequels a thing of beauty and a true work of art and that is how the true method of storytelling should be like regardless of yall’s opinions about the Prequels with all that being said including this fantastic take by ScreenCrush
The Star Wars prequels are amazing.

Great video. Just goes to show we're still learning new things about George's movies we might not have thought of before.
God dammit this is a good analysis and great video! I love your content! You might just be my favourite Star Wars youtuber.
Ryan - I love this take on Lucas and the personal influence on his films! Definitely some things I hadn't considered before but certainly make sense. I wonder how much of that was intentional in his storytelling versus what kinda seeped in from his subconscious? Well done, sir! If you'd like to take a deeper dive into Lucas's contributions to the technology of filmmaking, check out Michael Rubin's book, "Droidmaker: George Lucas And the Digital Revolution" It chronicles the the history of Lucas's vision to streamline the film production process complete with the early back and forth between Lucas and Coppola up through the emergence of digital production. Highly recommend!
Ryan, you’re great and I think this take is spot on. And I want to help you pronounce “taciturn.” It’s “tassiturn,” not “tackiturn.”
You’ve got it all wrong, the prequels are actually about your mom
Rewatched after first view & subscribing even without visiting the Channel cuz this Video is Excellent!! I don't have but a few friends but will share this with all of them.
Why do we discredit George??? Because George discredits his wife and others that literally saved Star Wars in the edit. He wants everyone to think he was THE creator of Star Wars.... don't look behind the curtain at my wife and everyone else.
Then, when he surrounded himself with yes people we get Jara Jat Binks and absolutely horrible dialogue. The prequels weren't bad... they just showed how much George relied on true collaborators and an openess to seeking and taking feedback.
ill never stop crapping on the prequels. in 15 years everyone going to go easy on the sequel trilogy too & ill be there to remind them everything post return of the jedi will always be a 2 pack of ass
Rogue1 was good, some of the shows have been pretty good too.
You keep saying this and it’s been 9 years since the force awakens and people still think it’s crap and the sequels overall. Nobody hating on the prequels except you 🤓
I'm with ya 100% on this
ROTJ was the beginning of decadence in Star Wars. Jar Jar is just an over-the-top ewok.

Wow; this was very good and amazing. I actually knew nothing about Lucas except for some of his movies, and you tied this together well.
Isn't the Indiana Jones trilogy another one under Luca's belt?
2:21 and those are probably just two random dudes that look just like Hall & Oates. 🤣
Great analysis! It's impossible to peer into Lucas's soul to know how much of this is true, even if it was somewhat subconscious for him. But you make some great points. Kudos!
You nailed it.
🤔😏 Interesting, very thought provoking
This is so incredibly clever, it gives me such a greater respect for movies i already love and respect hugely and a director a respect hugely.
Great video! Also, you could have mentioned George Lucas was the executive producer for Howard the Duck. This was a notable failure for Lucas. Now I understand why he got that made, because of his love for the old Scrooge McDuck comics.
This totally made me rewatch Menace and Clones. Not. Not for all the ganja in Texas.
He rarely comes to Modesto anymore. They have a graffiti every year. Now we know why he is reluctant to come back there. Thank you for this video. It’s really shown light to why one of that towns most, if not the most influential people is so hesitant to engage in it’s community.

Thank you for posting this video 🎥🍿🥤. You have given me. A different way to look at it. I always knew that. STAR WARS was about George Lucas. But I had no idea 💡. Just how much of it. Was the man, & the story. I guess it’s both the same thing. Dam…
underrated af video
The secret history of Star Wars is a fascinating book. It brings up so many things from interviews articles and lays out everything that is out there (much more detailed than the official LucasFilm version, obviously).
The book goes to show how the six films reflects George Lucas's journey through life and coming to terms with things he experienced. But it seems (the book posits) that it was rarely intentional, more subconscious.
I wonder what would have happened had George not neglected his first marriage.
If he’d leaned more towards family earlier on perhaps he could have still created ILM but with Marsha at his side later on.
Since she was a cheater with someone they had hired, it stands to reason she is a low life. So she would've cheated, divorced, stolen ILM from him, and movies would end up even worse. So not only did he dodge a bullet by getting rid of Marsha and her "California values", but he also continued to gift all of us, with his ingenuity. Thank You George.
Nicely done Ryan.Thank you.
I’ve always thought there was truth to this idea. I was actually disappointed when we didn’t get a love triangle between Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padme. I thought that would’ve been the perfect reflection on his wife’s affair.
This video for some reason just brought me to tears
Wow this was great! I believe every bit of it. There is a heart and soul to the 6 original movies that obviously are missing to the sequel trilogy..
Star Wars I-VI are the true cult classic wonderful movies that built the legend of the Star Wars universe, the Skywalker saga, Star Wars world building, iconic characters, world expansion and exploration, the diversity of peoples, planets, environments, creatures, and digital technologies revolution, a great galactic epic in six wonderful parts, the story of Anakin Skywalker, the chosen one destined to bring balance to the Force, the rise and fall of a hero who succumbs to fear, anger and the temptation of the dark side, his quest to save those he loved, leading him to become Darth Vader, and how he ultimately redeems himself through the love of his son, the story of a democracy slowly corrupted into a dictatorship, as Palpatine manipulates fear and crisis to seize absolute power, until the fall of the Empire and the restoration of the Republic's order through Anakin's sacrifice, ending with the liberation of all the planets of the Star Wars world, the wonderful Star Wars galaxy, the work of its creator, two wonderful facets that form an inseparable seamless whole of the Star Wars galaxy, the six original movies of the Star Wars universe, the creativity of world-building, the perfectionist visionary genius, wonderful creative vision and incredible fantastic imagination of George Lucas, and Star Wars I-VI will never be beaten.
Great essay, Ryan.

George Lucas watching this video right now....
"hello darkness my old friend"
This is right on . A Brilliant analogy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
Anakin is not greedy for wanting his mother to still be alive. She was freaking tortured to death.
If this theory is correct, then it also means that Lucas used a blockbuster franchise to express his regret for his role in creating the blockbuster franchise, which adds whole new layers of irony to the prequels.
Great video essay!!
amazing video.
I didn’t / don’t know too much about Lucas’ life… thanks for the video
In a very big coffee table book on Return of the Jedi, Larry Kasdan was Trying to get info out of George on the Identity of the Emperor and George finally snapped and revealed the ID for the Emperor is Richard Nixon... Yeah, try translating that into a space fantasy.
I drive by Skywalker ranch sometimes. It's a beautiful area
Side note about the modesto ca thing.
Besides me living here, but jeremy renner was born in modesto and timothy olyphant was raised in modesto.
Olyphant was in the mandolorian and boba fett. Which is awesome!
So me and my wife have been catching up on bad batch, and my wife actually made a comment that the empire scientist (forgot his name) that is spearheading the cloning stuff looks JUST like renner. So we thought it would be AMAZING if he is planned for a live action show/movie appearance and renner portrays him in person. Renner would be amazing and have that same eerie presence as the character is in the cartoon.
I havent finished bad batch so im not sure if the empire scientist dude dies. But anyways. Just a thought to the whole Modesto shoutout thing. Would be awesome for a sort of collab of 2 town heroes. Lucas and renner.
I've been saying this FOR YEARS! The prequels were always a personal story about George and his feelings about his divorce and where his brain was during the Bush years. Also the relationship Luke (also george) had with Darth vader (his father).
That was a rad breakdown, thank you.
Wow, I never looked at the prequels that way...very interesting points!
I've never heard anything about George's mother in any documentary or interview, so I always assumed she died when he was young and that inspired Shmi Skywalker's early demise. Not so, Dorothy Lucas - George's mother - didn't die until 1983 after George finished the original trilogy.
Would love to see one on Jk Rowling and Harry Potter. I know SC talk about Tarantino but would love to see a similar breakdown.
I really like this theory, and I think you've made a great video essay!
That's G.E. Smith with John Oates, for the record.
G.E. Smith must be related to Cillian Murphy.
Great analysis Ryan! This really shows that Star Wars is George Lucas and that every step that Disney takes to move away from that just further alienates the fans that love George's Star Wars movies.
Just like anything, an argument can be made here for both for and against.
