The bow is the very front part of the ship, and the very back end of it is called the stern. The port side is the left and the starboard side is the right. Propellers are sometimes referred to as “screws.” The hull is the metal sides of the ship, the keel is the very bottom of it, and the superstructure is the top deck, usually made of wood. Smokestacks or funnels are large tunnels on top of the ship used to direct steam and smoke away from the deck. Masts are large wooden poles on the deck of the ship, usually used to hoist sails or hold a crow’s nest where crew members can see for miles around the vessel. Beam is a measurement that refers to the width of the ship.
The Yamato was so valuable to the Japanese that it was in port most of the time, earning the nickname “Hotel Yamato”.

Battleships were obsolete, the future was aircraft carriers and submarines. Pearl Harbor was a waste for the Japanese
First! For a people so disciplined the handling of ammo was disastrous as was their damage control. Amazing.
Yamamoto actually lost the battle of pearl harbor. The whole plan was dependent on the destruction of the uss enterprise and her 3 sister carriers pearl. They weren't at pearl to destroy. Yamato knew Japan was doomed when he heard the news.
Why have they gotten rid of battle ships? I guess the missile ships can cause more damage without the extra costs of such a large ship!!!

WW 2 was determined by air power and aircraft carriers. Battleships we’re helpless against the Dauntless Dive Bomber
You provide great information; stop being an apologist...you do just fine with the information you provide....don't worry about the "yeah - buts" in the world.
I think the only issues I have with the episode are the images of USS Skate, IJN Kongo, and IJN Nagato. Kongo and Nagato weren't in their WWII reconstructions, Kongo was in her 1916 design, and Nagato was in her 1920s look if I recall correctly. And Skate, is a later boat entire, not the WWII Submarine.
Elinor, for a lady that professes to not be clear with Navy jargon, you do very well! I really enjoy this channel. Unlike a lot of similar ones, your info is accurate and well-reasearched. Kudos to you!
My grandfather served on the USS Bennington (CV-20) which was part of TF 58 and had bombs (of the many) that hit Yamato.
There is a museum of the Yamato in Hiroshima, where it was built, with a large scale model of it. Having watched this video, I regret not visiting it.😂

My dad was a torpedo bomber pilot in VT-84 on the USS Bunker Hill. They attacked the Yamato at 12:58pm on April 7, 1945. About half the pilots from this squadron were killed by a kamikaze strike May 11, 1945.
