- I searched this river beach full of gemstones looking for the perfect gem quality garnet. What I found was mind blowing. Millions upon millions of red garnets. Most were very small, but many were big enough to collect. After hours of gem hunting we came home with a bucket full of garnets most small but some nice ones included in the mix. The goal of this prospecting was hopefully to find a big enough gemmy garnet to facet. Check out the video to see what we found. What a rock hound / gem hunter parricide this was.

My dad used to take me gold dredging when I was a kid. Most of my favorite life memories are from these trips. I lost my dad 8/9/2020 and this video brought back a flood of warm memories. I've always wanted to take my kids to do this, I know they would adore it. Thank you for these videos. I hope your children have just as many warm memories of your trips as I do of mine.

My father does the same. I joke that he is the cause of most beach erosion because he can’t go anywhere without leaving with a pocket full of rocks or sea glass. I can’t help it either!
Isn’t it lovely to bring home a rock? It sort of feels like contraband. But it is just a rock from a place where you made memories.
i just watched a 22 minute video of a happy bearded man just finding gems in the sand by moving them around in a bucket and making thousands while i'm here waiting for the miracle of that minimum wage interview, and i suddenly realized why the wizards in harry potter hid from muggles.

When I was a kid, I worked at a garnet mine in North Creek, NY. We would find large garnets everywhere. The best ones, which we called fire garnets were pretty rare though. I know by the end of summer, I had less than five of those, while I had a small bag filled with the darker garnets.
I wouldn't want to leave! Garnets are what got me into rockhounding when I was a kid. Those were only 1mm in size and in granite so collecting them was difficult.
those black ones your passing over can sometimes be hiding deep red garnets. the biggest one i ever found was fist sized and flawed to the blazes. but after alot of picking at it with a dissection kit i still managed to end up with a nice 2.7 deep red faceted gem.

Yeah, at the very least some high intensity light should be shined into the larger stones.

It might have been worth quite a bit as a polished garnet crystal ball, given the size you describe. Collectors and Spiritualists pay big money for stuff like that.

@@smithsmith1956 The vast majority of these stones aren't gem quality. They really can't be out there for the money. This is something deeper. Something you only understand when you disconnect and find nature's surprises. You should try it.
I'd love to have a bunch of these as a substrate in an aquarium accompanied by some complementary lighting.

That is a LOT of garnets. What a great way to spend family time. We used to go to a place in Panama called Fort San Lorenzo at the mouth of the Chagres River and collect glass beads from the old Spanish Gallions from the 1500's when Christopher Columbus discovered the Chagres River. Those were the best days of my life, and I am sure when the boys grow up, they will remember this for ever. Great video Dan, thanks for sharing.
These are the times that your children will remember the most. Growing up my father loved to take us rock hounding and those are some of the greatest times we ever had with our parents. Great memories!

I went rock hunting & climbing with my older sister almost 40 years ago. We collected a lot of rocks and memories from those days. I no longer have my sister but still have most of the rocks pkus the memories.

I totally agree. I mean I would pay at lest $100 for a small fighter fish in fresh water cup with those gems on the bottom. Fighting fish come in beautiful red colors.

My grandpa panned for gold.
One of the times I went with him
there were these beautiful little red stones on the sand.
I asked him what they were
he said oh they're just garnets
they're not worth anything.
Then a few years ago while watching QVC shopping Channel
they were selling garnet jewelry
That's when learned that the ones I found as a child were garnets
I wish I would have kept the ones I found with grandpa 😔

This reminds me of when the family went hiking, and my dad picked up a few of these tiny pebbles in a dried up creek bed and showed me what a garnet is. Nice memories.

Kill'em! Kill'EM! I live in Texas and those damn things suck! I have a friend who builds a plexiglass 4x4 foot square and lets them go to town. Every few months he pours lead down the main hole to make molds of the hive. Pretty cool.
In Idaho a lot of garnet mines were found by looking at the "tailings" next to ant holes. Garnets are heavy so the ants put them in a nice little pile next to their nests. The ones I saw were up to 1/8" inch diameter dark purple red garnets. Really nice!

Yeah, I did a lot of panning and stop on river beds as a kid, it’s a lot of fun, but you rarely find anything.

I would say a thin layer gem garnets with clear epoxy into a table Groove for the light underneath would be really nice like a semi bottom done up like a river bottom and lit From Below be cool

I honestly just wanna go there and find these. I was hoping to just get hundreds of tiny gemstones into a small jewelry box for decoration, where it almost looks like you have a small box full of ruby dust, but actually just super tiny gemstones
There's spots like this all over Southwest colorado. I lived in a town called salida. In solid a is the headwaters of the Arkansas river. All sorts of semi precious gemstones. Also royal gorge canyon has so much you can pick up a red pebble on the trail and odds are its a garnet.
All his vids have that joie de vivre. It's refreshing.
I couldn't imagine them having any value in that size until I read posts from people wanting to fill their fish tanks with them...

I am totally fascinated! Not only am I a rock hound, but garnets are my birthstone. I had a beautiful garnet ring as a child. It was often mistaken for a ruby. It was so perfect. Not sure what happened to it. I'm enjoying living vicariously through you and your family. I'm now disabled and homebound. But would have loved to have gone gem hunting where you are here! We have a area here in germany where 1 inch big garnets and bigger just laying around in the forest all coming from eclogite which weathers away

Here in southern Arizona we have a place loaded with the same small garnets. We know they're garnets but we call them sand Ruby's. Sounds a little more exotic.

Hey Dan get yourself a large Neodymium magnet to separate those high Iron Garnets.
Neodymium magnets shouldn't become wet. Let the samples dry first.

Took the comment right from my fingers lol and you can put your neodymium magnet in a thin plastic bag to keep it from getting wet if thats really something that shouldnt happen. I do it even with dry material just to keel my magnet clean

Hopefully they're using a coated neodymium or a different type.

Be careful with garnets in aquariums,I only say this because they contain iron,aluminium and magnesium ions which if concentrated into an aquarium will probably end up poisoning your fish.
Also there an algae that thrives on iron rich water and it produces toxic waste.

I lived near the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. My search was for well cooked beach glass. The search is the thrill. I loved it and would like to experience other kinds of rock or beach hunting. Found many fossils too. Any one have favorite hunting experiences or places? You rock hound friend.
