  • A unique opportunity to hear Holst’s ‘The Planets’ performed on Truro Cathedral’s magnificent Father Willis organ whilst seated underneath the spectacular Gaia artwork.
The performance will be undertaken by John Challenger, assistant director of music at Salisbury Cathedral, who has transposed Holst's seven-movement work, originally written to be performed by a large orchestra, specifically for the Father Willis Organ. Not copying the effect of the orchestral instruments, but finding a new version of the suite.
Speaking about his arrangement, Challenger said, “I would not have arranged The Planets for any pipe organ, but it is the character and versatility of this particular instrument which allows the music to flow. I’m not trying to imitate the orchestra but allow the music to be reborn with an organ identity.”
This promises to be a unique and exciting event enhanced by also experiencing the full illumination effect of Gaia in the darker, after-hours setting of the cathedral.
£12.00 per person (Under 11's £8.00). All funds raised will directly support the care and upkeep of Truro Cathedral.
Doors open at 7pm and it is anticipated that this seated event will run for approximately one hour.
