- Electricity is generated from gas by burning the gas to create heat, which powers a turbine that spins a generator to produce electricity:
1. Combustion
Natural gas is burned in a combustion turbine or gas-fired power plant.
2. Turbine operation
The turbine's blades spin, which drives a compressor to bring in more pressurized air and spins a generator to produce electricity.
3. Electromagnetic induction
The spinning rotor in the generator's electromagnetic field creates an electric current, which is the electricity that is produced.
4. Transmission
The electricity is sent through power lines and transformers to increase its voltage for long-distance transmission.
5. Distribution
The electricity is distributed to homes, businesses, and industries through local power grids.
There are three types of gas power stations:
Open cycle fast turbines (OCGT): These are smaller and good for short runs of energy production.
Combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT): These are more efficient than OCGTs, but more costly to build.
Combined heat and power (CHP): These are efficient, but only when the heat can be used effectively.
Natural gas power plants are more efficient than coal power generation, but they still contribute to climate change. This is because the extraction of gas releases methane into the atmosphere, and the ignition of natural gas produces carbon dioxide.
Rare to see China out of the top 3. India and Brazil also didnt show up. Seems like gas for eletricity is viable for just a few contries.
unfortunately this is because they are reliant on coal, which emits 1000g CO2 per kWh, as opposed to combined cycle gas turbines (natural gas not petrol) which emit 450g CO2 per kWh. gas is the next step from coal and many developing nations have not made this step yet.
None tbh. Gas needs to be abolished lest one uses coal, like poland or germany or the baltics.
Bad poland not investing in renewables yet having 10-15% prod by renewables.
Russian Federation?
You insistently write Turkey. I unfollowed until Turkiye wrote. 😞
