      Binkov's Battlegrounds
      First, let me thank you so much for the big effort you are attempting to put every video you issue.
      Second, I wanted to give you a proposal for your next video. In fact, I have given this proposal also in the comments of your last two videos. Fortunately, a lot of people interacted with this suggestion. The proposal is to make a video about a hypothetical war between Egypt and Turkey. Both countries are competing immeasurably a lot; politically, economically, and militarily. Both are competing over political presence in Mideastern countries, such as Libya, Sudan, the Gulf (the Qatari crisis), as well as Syria. In addition to all this, they are competing militarily in the Mediterranean for discoveries of oil and gas fields. Additionally, despite Turkey’s membership in the NATO; however, Egypt’s military power is rivaling the Turkish one. And if we take Turkey’s NATO-membership into consideration, then we should also take Cyprus and Greece, who are also members in the NATO and the European Union 🇪🇺, that have a lot of alliances with Egypt also into consideration.
      Thank you a lot for your hard work, again.

    Iran has the perfect terrain to fight a defensive peoples guerilla war. You literally could not ask for better defensive terrain. Wadis, swamp, narrow mountain passes, huge engaged population, long standing plans for repelling just such an invasion, thousands upon thousands of small MANPADS, MANPATS and AShM... The main goal of Iran's military doctrine is to defend the regime and make America's war with Iran as expensive as possible. Iran is going to lose in a full confrontation with the US so it's going to pull an even worse VietCong strategy and make the US waste as much resources as possible. Just look at what hezbollah did to Israel and the Houthis to the Saudis. IEDs,ATGM strikes,daily ambushes, MANPADS shooting down helicopters. Iran would slowly bleed out US forces on the ground. We are talking about 300-500 casualties a day. Not to mention the urban warfare nightmare fighting in Isfahan,Tehran,Mashad,Karaj,Shiraz,Qom,Tabriz. It would make the battle of Fallujah look like sunday morning pick up game. China and Russia could get involved. They would send Iran more manpads,ATGMS, claymore mines etc to aid in the guerilla war effort through the Caspian Sea and Pakistan. Anyone who thinks a US invasion of Iran would be a cake walk is delusional. We are talking about 10-20k US casualties in the first two months of fighting. It would end US primacy and prestige.

      There would bo no need to pursue them into that location, once the cities fall, the country falls and almost all of the major cities fall well with range of the US Navy and after the Air Force takes control of the skies, can be bombarded in submission. If the Iraqi military falls back into the mountains, no one cares, because they aren't going to be doing any harm there. The US can implement arial surveilance and when anyone or anything moves, they can drop in Apaches to wipe it out. Anyone that retreats there is going to need supplies, and as soon as they come out of the caves and crevices not only will the people be identified, but so will the location where they are hiding. The US would not have to send a single soldier into that terrain to neautralize them.

      Exactly. And even an Air Campaign alone won't make the Iranians sit still. They will cross into Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to target the Air Bases, forcing a land war. They know casualties are a factor with the US public. So a ground war is beneficial to them, not to mention China and Russia whom will supply large quantities of light weapons and endless ammo. • @pavan923
      @pavan923 6 месяцев назад +2

      1. Iran has much worse geography for an invasion, it is filled with many mountains and barren deserts, it is more similar to Afghanistan than Iraq
      2. Domestic resistance to the Iranian government is very large, however I doubt much of them will be supporting the US in this war as they would be seen more as a foreign invader than liberator.
      3. The Iranian government is not in as bad of an economic position as the Iraqi government was before Desert Storm. Yes, you can make the argument that Iran is under heavy sanctions, however Russia and China have come in to fill this economic gap. Iraq's war with Iran was so costly for Iraq that it costed more money than all of the money Iraq had made from the oil industry in the decades preceding it.
      4. The US would likely not have a big coalition backing them like they did in '91. The main reason that the Gulf War even happened was because Iraq invaded Kuwait, which angered the international community into forming the coalition. In this situation it is the opposite, it is the US invading a country, and much of the international community would either be neutral or release unbinding condemnations on the USA (with the possible exception of Russia and China, who may supply Iran). In addition, as the USSR was falling apart during the Gulf War, this was the first year in which the USA had a free-hand at doing basically whatever it wanted as it became the sole superpower. As a result, they did crippling bombings of Iraq before the invasion which was so bad Iraq regressed into a temporary stone age and never recovered for the next 12 years. Today, the situation is different, and Russia and China will most likely back Iran, in this multipolar environment the USA would not be able to do these things again or else they would risk facing harsh retaliation.
      I still do think, despite all these factors, that the US would still win out the war. However, it would be EXTREMELY costly, and once the US takes over, the guerilla war which would follow (in terms of casualties for the US) would be less like Afghanistan and more like Vietnam, possibly higher. Millenium Challenge 2002 already showed that Iran would likely be able to inflict crushing defeats on the US even despite their technological and military inferiority compared to the US.

    Iran can also do something that Iraq could not. They have the potential to hit the US directly because of sleeper cells within the USA. While it will not strategically affect the front lines, it could be a useful political tool for Iran as some Americans don't have the stomach for war.

      Attacking the US is definitely not in Irans best interest. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 shows that Americans come together after attacks and that war support rises. If Iran's goal is to use the US public's war support against the government then it would think twice about attacking US soil.

It's a dangerous bet, regardless, terrorism can sometimes keep the defender nation's free, but it could also risks retaliation that may lead to more civilians (that insurgents are "supposed" to protect) being killed. Morale is almost impossible to predict, anyone could say "my country is braver," but the thing with human psychology is that it can flip upside down in mere minutes. Binkov do include morale in his analysis, but it's not emphasized upon because of the aforementioned reason. The US, on paper, would win in the war of attrition against Iran due to larger population pool and larger economy, but modern, real-life war have never been fought "to the last man," political, morale, and logistics determined the victors. If your country has an overwhelming numerical advantage, but your enemy is half the world away and you can only send few thousands troops at the time, you lose by logistical failure. If you have all the advantages except for morale and politics, your citizens will eventually think the war is stupid and will resist draft and other supports (like in the game of chess, it doesn't matter if you lose only few pawns but your enemy have only king left, if you knocked your own king piece down, you lose the game).

    I believe the Iranians moral would be fairly high, this would likely be due to their very long and natural history. Unlike the rest of the Middle East following World War 1, Iran (persia) was not balkanized like the remnants of the Ottoman empire. The reason Iraq's troops would occasionally surrender without a fight is because they were not of the same ethnicity or religious sect.
    Iran on the other hand is composed of mostly ethnic Iranians who, for the most part, share the same branch of religion and support for thier secular government. So a prediction of years of bloody and fierce fighting on both sides would be accurate.

    • @espacfc2365
      @espacfc2365 5 лет назад +8

      Nikolay Mikhayluts Yes the Iranians would be a very tough crowd.
      Even after the collapse of their government and loss of their military, some ex soldiers or even civilians could take arms and start a guerrilla war against the occupying Americans. This could lead to Iranian freedom fighters and terrorist groups ambushing US forces, terrorist plots, and even launching attacks on American civilians, committing acts comparable to 9/11, leading to a whole new can of worms.
      Would truly be a shit show if the Americans went to war with Iran. The war itself would be brutal and long, the Iranians have a decent military. After the Americans eventually won over, the occupation and keeping the peace would be hard. Look at Iraq. 16 years after the 2003 invasion and its still a war torn country. Iran would be like that just on a much larger scale, having further repercussions on the wider world.

    One factor you may not be considering. If Iran has already built a nuclear weapon all it takes is a group of Russian, Chinese or Pakistani scientists to show them how to miniaturize it into battlefield nuclear weapons (i.e. nuclear torpedoes, nuclear artillery). If they have figured that out, US casualties will multiply.

      Even with 30% being fit, that's more than 8 million that you would need. The US doesn't need to occupy anything. Occupation is totally optional. The strength of the US is the ability to win in offensive campaigns. Sitting around in an occupation is a recipe for insurgency. Simply razing the country to the stone age would secure the US's strategic goals without the need to provide Iranians fairly stationary targets. I think the US has learned that lesson.

    I was a scout in Desert Storm. The Army held educational classes to teach us about the history and culture differences in the middle east to help us understand the political views, how history molded the current middle east, and why they don't want western cultures there.
    I remember when the US embassy in Iran was taken for a full year during the Carter Administration, and the US embassy in Beirut was bombed, as well as the year prior to 9/11, among many other incidents.
    Throughout the last 1500 years the middle eastern countries have made a very clear message, and repeated it clearly and consistently: They do not want their culture influenced by the west, they are willing to partake in trade and allow tourism, but no occupation by any foreigners.

Yeah, morale would be SKY-HIGH, iran would be seen as the defender of islam, the waving flag of the world against american imperialism, it would also definitely get volunteers..
