As a content creator with two channels, I completely agree -- RUclips ads have gone insane! I've gotten more complaints in the last few months than in the last few years! I've started to manually set all ad breaks in my videos to alleviate the insanity. I like your point about buying a plan to negate the ad revenue over one's lifetime. I would agree with that math! I still never have gotten around to building my tilting router lift from you either. LOL But still LOVE the Big Print program I bought! I use it maybe once a year? But it's a life saver whenever I use it. Take care!
Very cool! Great to see the community support! I'm a cheapskate but I give you a heartfelt "THANKS!" And I do tell everyone I talk to about woodworking to watch your channel. And John Heisz! I did buy a few other plans actually and built the Box Joint Jig! Some day I'll use it for something more than a cat dish stand. Ads are ridiculous now on RUclips! Thanks again!
I am so thankful for your Big Print program Matthias . I have used it a number of times over the years to print out plans for many projects. Everyone interested in woodworking needs a copy of 'Big Print'. :-)
I love the clever little 'garbage picks' you have. I did the same thing with a trampoline I had for my children regarding the feet. I did not think of the carpet idea!
I really respect the ethical approach you take to matters like this Mathias. Many people just take advantage of what ever generosity people show. You've demonstrated true integrity and decency.
Look into the youtube channel IncomeSchool, they may be able to help you if you contact them. Also, you do a lot of tools that you use vids, find out how to do affiliate marketing. Hashtags, hashtags, hashtags, learn how to do hashtags to help people find you. Everything you need can be found on youtube. Just do a youtube search on how to make money with youtube. I just found your channel and i really enjoy it. Good luck and be safe. You inspire a lot of people. Dont give up!
I like this take. You see the systemic problems with advertisement (Whatever you're paid is not worth the time we are wasting), instead of just focusing on the your side (you get paid for us wasting our time, technically you don't have to care about our time). I appreciate people that focus on the whole value chain.
I use the Brave browser only for RUclips. It blocks all the ads by default. You are right the ads on RUclips are getting ridiculous. Keep up the good work and congrats on the new baby. Harry
The honesty is appreciated! You are one of the originals and in it for the right reasons. It’s refreshing compared to others on this platform. I swear if I have to hear one more audiobook or VPN plug...
it's incredibly relieving to see a content-maker mulling over his monetization options publicly and then follow with the question "or am I just milking my patreons by creating junky videos?" ... I have always resonated with your content more so than other woodworking channels that follow gimmicky trends and this is the reason. Your process is rooted in quality. You care about what you create. You don't want to add to the "internet fluff" as I call it. Greatly appreciate it.
I've just subscribed to your channel on the strength of your honesty, I hate ads, they drive me nuts. Thanks for the tip re: Ad Blocker. I hope you make a good living out of your hard work.
Well this gave me the push to finally buy your mechanical counter plans. I got my bandsaw set up recently so it's time. Glad you're getting more support from the last video, I hope you get a whole load more from this one too. You're a big inspiration to me Matthias, thank you :)
Thank you for being so honest. I purchase some plans sometime next month. For chairs. Right now I'm building sliding barn door. For my bedroom my wife's request
You tube membership is worth every penny just to not have to watch ads. Been watching for years...like to see more of your family though. Keep post and be safe!
I am actually going to use your plans.... i will modify them. I have a problem that way. But I have been wanting to make some dining chairs for about 8 years. The work you did has saved me countless hours of work figuring out a couple things that were not going right for me. I don't make videos. 'cause the work involved in that is something I do not want to do..... but I will send you some pics of some finished chairs. Matthias You Rock!
Of course I've been a subscriber for years and this is exactly why I like this man. But also his content is incredible and he is a very, very skilled woodworker. In my opinion the best on RUclips, him and John heisz. Stand-up guy for sure. I will be helping in any way I can
Congratulations on the new baby! I've bought plans, but never made the pantorouter, since I'm a bit intimidated by it. I'm making the wheelie desk using the free sketchup plan, so even if I never make the pantorouter, it comes out even-steven. It would be better to make the pantorouter before the wheelie desk and use the pantorouter for that. To make the wheelie desk, I may decide to make the tenoning jig which would be another plan, still on the fence about it. Long story short: It's very complicated to figure out which jigs should I make first in order to make other jigs and ultimately furniture. 😉
Router table? Heck yes. I got a fancy Bosch that I want to build all kinds of things for like a dumbed down version of your pantorouter. Finally time to buy plans for the tilting router table I've been coveting for years.
Be assured that we are with you all the way. I play the ads but in the background while I watch the actual video in another window. I've tried with up to 10 ads in the background and can still watch the video without problem. Just do whatever it takes.
Dude, with someone as genuine and legit and nice and funny and useful and entertaining and awesome as you, juts putting a patreon link under every video is NOT a crime and heaps of people that love your work will see it and throw a few bucks your way with NO expectation. Put the link in, please. You deserve it, 10x over. Think of all the past videos you've put effort into, some or all of the patreon coin is to cover that. My 2c. As usual, 11/10.
for the people who have been with you for a while, we understand. we know you are a dad who has kids, and supporting you in any way we can to maybe (even if by a little bit) you make content, sounds good to me! I see patreon as supporting you in your ability to make content, not paying you to make content. It is a small distinction, but it matter.
Thanks for your videos. You were the first person I saw really be precise with woodworking, and as a former physicist with some interest in engineering it's been fun watching your videos. I bought a couple plans from you a couple years ago (one of the bandsaws, screw advance box joint jig, and i think one more that i'm not remembering) but at the time didn't have a good place to do woodworking and didn't end up building them. Now that I've got my own garage in which to do woodworking I'll look through the plan catalog again, because there's definitely some that would be useful for me now.
I bought your bandsaw plans like 4 years ago and needless to say I have never had the available time/space/motivation to build it but I'm glad you appreciate my support. Make more videos and I will certainly buy another.
I bought some of your plans 8 years ago not realizing they were in metric XD, but the decade of videos has been well worth the money spent. You could potentially boost your sales with imperial (primitive) versions of existing plans
Hey, Matthias. Big fan of your work. I purchased your chair plans last week just to support you. Glad to hear I gained ad-block absolution because I've been using ad blockers for probably 20 years. I also just joined your Patreon. I'd have joined ages ago if I'd known for sure it was really you. Considering you had no mention of it on the channel I thought it might have been a fake account trying to make money on your good name!
This should be posted all over, _A Philosophy for Content Creators_. Wonderful! I just bought the marble machine 2.1 plans. $16, a steal :) I think maybe the first video of yours I watched was maybe during the first marble machine and I've been watching ever since, intrigued by the furniture, toys, gadgets, Blackberry ephemera, the jigs and other tools, and the stories of the camp and life in Canada. I have no shop and it still doesn't seem likely that I would in the near-term. One never knows how life goes. There is beauty in plans themselves however, and so it does not matter at all if I never build it as I will enjoy just looking at them and knowing I supported some great content as its creator wished.
Matthias, I like the idea of buying plans to support because you get most of the revenue and it’s direct. On that note, the projects that are easy to do or are fun like the cap thrower are what I may buy for the time being. I’ve bought the more complex plans before but my skill set hasn’t reached those levels yet. Thanks for the great videos and sharing your adventures with us.
And now I'm a patreon. You are literally the reason I own a table saw, and wanted to get back into wood working... You can have a few bucks a month from me. And just so you know, that comes with no obligation to post videos more frequently, though I DO really enjoy your videos. Cheers!
What a legend, after making content for years, now with over 1.7 million total subscribers, and he only turned on his ads 2 years ago? He is the most humble creator I know.
@@matthiasrandomstuff2221 Yes, my mistake, however I admire your aim to always have your viewers interests at heart, even if it impacts on your own benefit from doing what you love.
Don’t waste your time, I signed up to stop all ads a couple of months ago, believe or not it was an advert to stop adverts, I watch a lot of you tube but I haven’t seen an ad since signing up for that and until you mentioned ads in this video I had forgotten about having to watch ads and now I just enjoy the videos.
There are a number of other woodworking channels that use Patreon to essentially do what you describe. Don't be shy. You are your strongest advocate. You make fantastic content. You should- and can- be paid for it. Folks wouldn't need to buy plans for chairs for kids that are long out of the house if they could support you another way that is more direct.
Advertising is poison, but I can't blame you for it. It's hard to participate in the economy without it. I bought a table saw plan from you some years ago, so I guess I can have a clean conscience while using an ad blocker. Love your videos, hope you can keep doing them.
Greetings from Nebraska, USA! I found you when I was searching for a bandsaw solution in my shop (years ago). I'm guessing I'm one of the few who has found your RUclips channel through your website, via organic search results. I ended up purchasing the plans for the 14" bandsaw. I'm about halfway through, children and a career derailing my intended timeline. That said, if you're expecting year over year sales to decline on your plans, you might get extra mileage out of them by offering a comprehensive option. Access to all plans for the cost of 3 or such. I love your work, keep it up!
Unlike some certain (and bigger) other Canadian youtuber, you have such integrity and honesty Mathias. I always appreciate your channels and your contents, and this video makes me respect you even more. Keep up the good work mate. P/S: Bought a couple plans to support you. Cheers
It’s strange because we notice shows pumping ads, sponsors and annoying games....but we fail to notice members who’ve not turned ads on, just for our benefit. Your integrity is welcomed and it’s you who I will now alloy the ads as I know you’ve tried to help my viewing pleasure......Thank you
Hey Matthias, I was wondering if you would do a video on using your big print program? I’m building your 16 bandsaw and your jointer an I seem to always get hung up in the big print. Thanks. I consider myself a regular. Looking forward for your next project. Thanks you for doing this
I really enjoy your videos although I cannot build any of the building plans because, I dont have a workshop but that doesn't stop me from enjoying your content!
I sincerely appreciate what you do and how you do it. In my case, the tools and jigs that you design so well are the things I have been most excited about and would like to see more of. Your chair work is cool! However, my lovely wife has filled our house with more chairs than we need already (arghhh). You make mention of designing a router table - I built one about 20 years ago that I would like to update so I would readily buy a set of plans for your router table design. Thanks again for your work and your honesty and integrity of design.
I think using ad-block is just entering a downwards spiral. The people who dont use it will get more ads, because others use the blocker. This turns more people towards using blockers etc. I agree, that sometimes RUclips puts extreme amount of ads in videos. My latest experience was a rewatch of a live stream, where at some point in a 25 minute span, ads were coming every 3-5 minutes. This can completely ruin the viewing experience. It was nice to hear about this stuff. I am in the camp, that watches the ads all the way on channels I regularly visit. Now I will consider donating directly instead. Thank you for the honest talk.
Appreciate your honesty Matthias, the trampoline segment was interesting as it's good to know how you approach and solve problems. Enjoy your videos and looking forward to a router table build! Best, Bill (ps another live stream q+a would be good if you can spare the time)
Even so, Mr. Wandel, we support you 100% as we always expect that amazingness and spontaneous content from your videos, no matter what kind or type of project you present us viewers, as I always said, you deserve the whole world to suscribe to your channel. We got your back as also we know your RUclips colleagues support you as well. Can't wait for your next post. Thanks......!!!
years ago I bought your apple grinder plans and then went ahead and built one, had my whole family help me grind a bunch of apples and then made delicious apple juice best 10 bucks ever!
I havent seen you in a while but i remembered your advice on CNC and can confirm - though the numbers being bought/built seems extraordinary (must be a product placement thing)
I'm apparently one of the few ppl that pays for RUclips Red. I can't stand most of the content they create, but to me it's worth it to have no ads and (supposedly) help the people I view. So I hope you're getting your Red cut :)
It's true, i was just about to abandon the platform, but someone turn me on to Adblocker. It works. The ads just sucked so bad. . . Hope you can continue, all the best.
Matthias, Looking forward to some build content from you. If you ever do get around to building a new bandsaw, I would buy the plans because I might build one. Hey there’s an thought, have people pre purchase the bandsaw plans to help offset the cost of the “now expensive” materials?!
Hi Matthias, I used to watch all of your videos and I have also bought a lot of your plans, but I did not know about this channel and just came across it by accident, I have now subscribed and rang the bell for all notifications so I will not miss any of your new videos and looking through this cannel I see that I have a lot to catch up on. I thought you had stopped doing anything because I am subscribed to your other channel but you haven’t posted anything on there for a while and as I said I did not know this channel existed until I stumbled onto it today and looked at the thumbnail and thought that looked like one of your videos but I had not been notified about any new things. Well I think I have rambled on enough so I will wish you a good Christmas and all the best for next year. By then I might have gone through all the videos on this channel and watched any new one that I will be notified about.
I’ve been one of your patrons for a while (because I looked for you out there). I say go for the Patreon route. If people don’t feel they are getting value for supporting you they can always cancel ore reduce. I think anybody who supports your work knows what they are in for. Help us help you help us!!
The chair plans were a great idea. Not sure why they didn't sell. I would have bought except I close my outside shop during winter. I do wish you had a better method of molding the chair seat. I am not crazy about the flat chairs.
I have an ad blocker for a very long time - simply hate ads! The short times I watch TV, I mute the sound when commercials start. I support the channels I follow regularly, either by subscription of a channel's service that I find useful or, like in your case (and some other woodworkers), I occasionally buy a set of plans (didn't buy the chair, though).
I love your gear program lol. Bought it a while ago and have used it to make gears for some cool projects. I even cut some pin gears out of brass and made a really cool rack and pinion for a 3d printer.
Big fan of the channel, and even more after that video. It's so refreshing to se a youtuber so honest and clear viewing about youtube. I do use addblocker and seriously can't understand how other people can use any internet website without it. I stop totally listening to radio because i can't bare those agressive commercials. And i'm of those who deplore so many woodworking channels on youtube have became barely more than a showroom for manufacturer's social marketing campaigns over the last few year. And i'm sick and tired to have to have to spend so many of my time listening to those youtuber spending entire minutes of every single one of their video repeating like robots the same "social call to actions" (more than a minute on those bs out of a video that is less than 10min is just to low a ratio sorry). So no i don't want to be their patreon because then more than 10% of my money would pay them to something i sincerely hate no mater how much i appreciate the remaining content as you put it that doesn't worth it. And no i will not follow you on twiter, instagram, tiktok, facebook and so and so, because i have better thing to do in my life to follow a dozen of "social" media (like as an exemple actually getting involved in real social activities with real people...) I'm not here judging people who will cherry pick one or two of those and spend some of their time flowing those few but following as many as typical youtubers mention at the end of their videos is just purely insane ! I'm actually spending probably far too much time watching videos on youtube and when a significant proportion of that time has no other purpose than leting some xyz company the opportunity to manipulate me on buying things i don't really need then that start to defeat reason. So thank you Matthias to be one of the last mohican who don't get trapped into all those nonsenses and be a real honest man who care enough for us all to deliver such great contents without all the noises.
I watch a lot of youtube and your channel is my favorite. I wish you could get better at the artistic part . I would like see you collaborate with a decorative designer on furniture and apholstery.
I truly appreciate your honesty and integrity Mathias. Cheers.
Agreed 100%. If the RUclips ads would really profit for any content creator or channel, then there would be an ad every 1 minute :)
I appreciate the transparency Matthias.

Your content is stellar. You should be compensated for the quality of your videos.
Always good to view your videos!
Duuuuuude! I really want the ad-blocker-absolution plan. I’ll buy 10! 🤙
yay for router table, it will be interesting to see what you come up with.
Informative and entertaining as usual. Will not be purchasing your chair plans anytime soon but I intend to buy your box joint masterpiece.
Thanks for the update! Good talk, good talk.
I would love a router table video, i want to build one and would really like to see your approach on fences and especially dust collection!
Haven't used Adblock on RUclips since Red came out. Always watch and love your videos 🙏
years ago I bought your apple grinder plans and then went ahead and built one, had my whole family help me grind a bunch of apples and then made delicious apple juice
best 10 bucks ever!
Nice
I havent seen you in a while but i remembered your advice on CNC and can confirm - though the numbers being bought/built seems extraordinary (must be a product placement thing)
The chairs are beautiful but way above my ability.
Love your channel! I do buy plans to support you but I also hope to build some of them sometime soon!
Matthias, Looking forward to some build content from you. If you ever do get around to building a new bandsaw, I would buy the plans because I might build one. Hey there’s an thought, have people pre purchase the bandsaw plans to help offset the cost of the “now expensive” materials?!
way ahead of you, been using an ad blocker for about 15 years now.
Sir, I love your content and really appreciate how you approach life in general. Keep it up and remember Family First!
Thats what I like about you and John H. You say it how it is without all the BS. You two are the only ones I have bought plans from.
Thanks for the absolution. Best 8 bucks I've spent today. Scott
I would be very interested in plans for a router table!
Yeh. It's a really good standalone program. Well worth the money. I don't have to faf about with f360 etcs Pina plugins etc
You dont have to justify anything to us. You do good work, will always watch! Ad blocker on pc not on cell so ads or no ads will watch.
Would you ever consider making a *discounted* bundle of all the plans available on your website?
This man is in another league ... if just other youtubers were so clear and open ....
I watch a lot of youtube and your channel is my favorite. I wish you could get better at the artistic part . I would like see you collaborate with a decorative designer on furniture and apholstery.
I did buy the chair plans but I am actually very excited to build them as well. Will be building the spruce version.
