I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease 2 years ago. My eGFR ranged from 48-52. I was told by my doctor that it would progress over time, but this progression could be slowed by medication which would be prescribed when my eGFR reached 40. I read about plant based diets and decided to give it a try. 6 weeks after eating mainly brown rice and vegetables my eGFR went up to 65. Now, 18 months after a whole food plant based diet my eGFR is 94. Incidentally I had pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, and was on 8 prescription medications. I was 60 pounds overweight. I am in my late 60's. I take no prescriptions now. I lost the 60 pounds, my cholesterol is 117, my asthma is gone, my A1c is 5.4, and my blood pressure averages 108/62. I have seasonal allergies, and sadly they did not go away ( I had hoped). By the way, I also eat 5 bananas a day. None of the doctors I have ever seen suggested a whole food plant based diet. I credit Drs. Greger, Barnard, and McDougall as having saved my life.

A few years ago I was diagnosed with lupus, RA, APS and then just last year they suspected I have pulmonary hypertension because of an enlargement of one of the Chambers in my heart and presence of ventricular tachycardia during a 14 day monitor. Unfortunately I was not medicated for it but it was something that there were going to monitor over the next year and a half for progression. I say unfortunately because I had a heart attack about 2 weeks ago due to the VT and a sudden high blood pressure spike. The major thing that saved me was the blood thinners I was already on so thankfully there was no damage to my heart and I was placed on beta blockers and put on a very low sodium diet. I just started using potassium chloride but before this, I've never heard of it in my entire life. It actually taste great and you don't have to use a ton to get the salt taste. A little goes a long way and after a full week or so eating food with zero or the exact same flavor, and don't get me wrong Mrs Dash makes a few awesome salt free seasoning mixed, eating food with a mouth full of salty goodness and knowing it's actually good for me, is Heaven sent. Well, actually Earth sent since it's gonna keep me here on the Earth for a little while longer at least.

Possibly cost. I’ve been using potassium chloride for a while and it’s a lot more expensive than salt. But I think what Dr. Greger mentioned about flavor is probably more of a stumbling block. Not only the type of food, but also the quantity of potassium chloride can be severely detrimental to flavor. I use the stuff very sparingly and taste test to make sure it’s not too much. It definitely tastes different than sodium and once you cross the line, it’s really revolting 🤮

Do you have any comments on the potassium-40 radionuclide contained in this salt? I poured a small pile onto a plate and measured 6x the background levels coming from the salt. It was a dose of almost 1 uSeivert per hour.
Potassium-40 naturally occurs as a small fraction of nearly all potassium, and potassium is important for life. It has a biological half life of 30 days and it is a beta and gamma emitter. The lack of alpha makes it much safer for ingestion relative to other radioactive materials.
But what are the consequences of significantly increasing the dose by replacing regular salt? This seems to go much beyond the otherwise natural level of consumption due to it being in foods like bananas and spinach.

20 bananas a day is only about 10g of potassium, in about 2500kcal. I could eat 4kg of Kale in a day, get almost 15g of potassium, but less than 2000kcal. One clear thing to do is use carefully and have your K (potassium) level check to rule out any rare but potential risk. There’s benefit / risk to almost everything. Here the benefit outweighs the risk with what should be modest use (ie idea isn’t to switch from proverbial tons of sodium salt to tons of potassium salt). But to mitigate risk, simply nudge into potassium salt and have doc check potassium blood levels. Note, my preferred product is Morton Lite (50/50) salt. Lo Salt is 70/30 (K/Na) but harder to find here in Detroit.

I think that salt and potassium are both needed for overall health. Mainly eliminating salt, as this video seems to suggest, and replacing it with potassium chloride fails to allow for the benefits of salt, as it is an essential mineral for overall health. I spent more than a year studying the optimum salt and potassium intakes and found that the general information given to us by government and medical professionals is misguided and outdated. Other online resources have shown that a sodium intake of between 4-6 grams per day is linked to the lowest all-cause mortality numbers worldwide, so the current "guidelines" of less than 2g sodium a day are actually not achievable and are unhealthy. As for the potassium intake, at 4.7 G recommendation, it is rarely achieved by most of the population, and I think that getting 7-8 g per day of potassium is closer to the ideal amount. The only way to do this is with a potassium powder, like potassium citrate and mix it with some juice and water each day. As this video clearly shows, higher potassium intake is linked to a much lower rate or all-cause mortality. It is a shame that the general medical establishment doesn't seem to understand these seemingly simple things that could dramatically improve overall health in the population.

The point was that it may be dangerous, but if you have NaCl in your pantry, it's the same level of risk for KCl. We don't have an epidemic of NaCl overdoses so I don't see KCl as an issue.

Potassium chloride is probably safe a high doses because your body will never absorb it. I'm taking "medical grade" potassium chloride for a deficiency in form of three times a day two 600mg pills. The package says absorption of two pills is already weaker than one and more pills than three at a time is pointless.

I was amazed what I found when I started tracking sodium intake. While eating no processed meats, salty snacks or added table salt, I still found I was pushing the 1500 mg / day recommended limit. I was eating two slices of multi-grain bread on a sandwich for lunch, each of which I discovered contained 250 mg of sodium. Just one slice of plant based cheese added another 250. If I added 4 strips of tempeh bacon, that would add another 640, or 1,390 mg of sodium just at lunch. Eat plant based, as the doctor advises, but be cautious of the sodium even in otherwise healthy plant based foods. Since watching this video series, I switched to a lower sodium whole wheat bread and substituted fresh vegetables with some NuSalt and hummus for the tempeh and cheese. Still a delicious lunch, but with much lower sodium and higher potassium.

I got off my BP meds (through diet too) and I added more potassium (about 5k mg a day) one teaspoon of Nu salt or No salt diluted with water (about 1 cup) twice a day. FDA suggests 4700 mg a day. Salt is the scapegoat for the SAD diet. If you took all the salt out of the SAD diet, it would be just as unhealthy. If you added 0.5-1.5 teaspoons of salt a day (1100-3300 mg of sodium in addition to the 50-500 mg you get naturally from fruits and vegetables) to a low fat wfpb diet, the diet would be no less healthy.
