I think so long as Nintendo (at least) keeps the communication about what they make as _distinct_ as possible from PC’s they’ll never hit a wall. Because we’re veering into faulty and flawed territory of _console power._ A factor which has _never_ pushed a machine, not even one from Nintendo, let alone Sony. I mean, we could look over our shoulder and see numbers of people having downloaded mobile games, but presence alone is not hearts and minds. There’s no event, no appointment gaming, whether we enjoy it Breath of the Wild or not, _it was compulsory_ to own it! Animal Crossing’s release was strategic and so on. It would take a better understanding of metaphysics rather than raw, _ever_ growing numbers and a lazy reliance on _framing_ of console power as chief to push the likes of developers who firmly grasp that power alone doesn’t move machines. PC will come, but it won’t push away Nintendo (at least) so long as they continue to demonstrate some wisdom of the subject. I mean. Imagine _getting excited_ to play a game. _Visualize_ the packaging, the timing, the Zeitgeist. A good example of that is just how many people play Apex on Switch simply due to convenience and easily available motion controls. It’s not graphics, it’s the other senses. The philosophy of things going ignored. Are we born yesterday? At this point I’m so exhausted about worrying about Switch power. Also it’s important to mention, the most important things which are that _games take too long and are costly to develop,_ and most importantly of all _are we still referring to playing Doom Eternal_ when we finished it _already_ and it’s expansions on several other devices? Do not video game media outlets douse the flame of excitement and are ready to put companies like Bethesda _out of business_ with Starfield for whatever obtuse reason they’ve decided? If I were _any of these companies_ I’d flee to Nintendo (and Valve) and reduce my visibility on other consoles as so to let the player decide via other avenues. Nintendo makes money from _every_ refugee and we see that with their indie and very sudden _adult_ library for the Switch. Power is Weak. Period. It has _never worked._ It never will. The Switch is a toy… not a computer. This _needs_ to be understood. Great Stuff, as always. Edit: Imagine a Nintendo console where the DLC or the entire game is loaded into the device _from an Amiibo_ itself? Edit: I can see Nintendo _never_ improving on the Switch. They would probably _go backwards_ and smaller and cheaper and _that_ would be the price cut for the device. I just found out that Apple Watches use up to 512mbs of ram and only recently a single Gb! The allowance of 4gigs of ram dedicated to games that most games haven’t even utilized in the PS4 and or X-Box One _won’t move the Earth._ To make the most of that extra power is to spend that much more time making and optimizing games which would then only have to look forward to being _cut down_ by middle men and media outlets online with no taste, let alone coding experience. There would be a civil war within the industry and Nintendo would watch it happen. I predict that console power _dies_ this very generation and it all starts with Starfield. Edit: How is anyone still dazzled and surprised by numbers when it comes to console power, _is beyond me?_ It’s not going to change a thing. Valve certainly doesn’t expect it to with their own device. We should be mindful to read up more, and pay more attention. That and mobile games are a drag. Period. Gaming socially is much, much more than just _logging on._ Real people are on the other end of these experiences, we need to be conscientious of that. _Rudderless,_ these disparate audiences _alone_ muddle and create the miasma of a gaming atmosphere, and Nintendo absolutely _understands this!_ Which is why the Switch is still a _delight_ to play _despite_ how bad the frame rate is in Apex or no matter how blurry Wolfenstein The New Colossus happens to be in handheld mode. Console power _has never_ and is incapable of _ever_ being able to account for these communicative factors which _drive_ the Switch, _alone._ Console power _remains_ as a factor of the Bermuda Triangle of Industry suckage along side the Cinematic Universe, The Live Service game (e-sports, micro transactions, mandatory battle pass grind), Incremental console power is a misunderstanding of a _toy_ you would use until it could _no longer work._ Today, Nintendo made and _still makes_ a toy, not and never… a computer. Famicom aside…
Steam Deck sold 1,6 million units in 2022 and they are planning to reach 3 in 2023. Dreamcast sold 9 million + units in 3 years and it kind of destroyed Sega. Steam Deck will probably reach 9 million units in 2027 (6 years). And we are not talking about Nintendo Switch with 125 million units (if i remember right). At this speed Steam Deck will reach 125 million units only in 22nd century. Well, probably never, because most people won't probably even want Steam Deck at that point. Steam Deck is kind of dead.
I dont think the steam deck running linux will do too much to shake Microsoft when Valve’s biggest push recently has been to encourage devs to use proton instead of native linux ports. Wines never been perfect, hell I still have to use some forks with patches for specific games, but if the lions share of the pc market stays desktops, microsoft wouldnt even have to lift a finger to get more ports. Make a pc port, get a free linux port with proton for steam deck. Make a linux port and you maintain two versions. If sony/nintendo goes full software all microsoft would do is just walk into a bunch of games pulled away from other consoles.
I'm not sure they are selling the Steam Deck at a loss, maybe the cheaper one at a small loss but not much of one and we can't compare the cost of the Steam Deck to the Nintendo Switch, the truth is, the Switch is way overpriced for the hardware it's got and should be a lot cheaper. I suspect Valve are selling the cheaper model either at manufacturing cost or at a small loss whiles making a little money on the more expensive models, after all, we should remember that Valve is working with AMD on a custom APU and that offers much of the same benefits that consoles have when it comes to reducing cost. The other portable PC were more or less using off the shelf parts, hence the high price tag but I suspect there is nothing stopping other companies doing the same thing what Valve is doing and if the Steam Deck is a success, others will follow. I do agree on the flood gate part, if the Steam Deck is a success many other companies are going to create their own PC consoles and not just portable ones but also home based PC consoles, after all, if the Steam Deck is a success, I can see Valve doing the same for a home PC consoles, using the same formula as the Steam Deck, low price, easy to use and so on. In any case, if the Steam Deck and future devices are a threat to consoles, it's not going to be overnight and will be a slow burn and it will take time to dislodge Sony and Nintendo and as for Microsoft, they could adapt to this the best, they are the more open of the 3 companies are already big in the PC space, it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft and Valve even do a deal at some point, maybe with Xbox games or something like that.
I love Linux 😊. I got a Nintendo switch and im thinking of emulate it if im able to. Want to play pikmin 3 in 4k. What I find really odd, that my old PC hardware i7-2600k and GTX970 still holds up. (CPU was released in 2011 and GPU in 2014) I was surprised to see, that I was able to play Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn on 1080p 60fps.
Also another better thing is variety it seems like most Playstation games are focused entirely on graphics and Nintendo games are focused on being kid friendly
Well, if you are able to run emulators like Yuzu or Ryujinx in the SteamDeck, the whole point of Switch exclusives doesn't really matters anymore since it's the same experience but better.
I'm here to tell you that (at least with .75 resolution and FSR), the Deck can run a good number of games at their max performance, with a few exceptions. Nintendo knows the videos are popping up and they're SCARED.
A hacked Switch will especially run games better than a Steam Deck (which requires sub-native resolution in some games), plus you won't get any online functionality in emulators.
valve may be the company that releases 1 tech demo every 9 years and an update for a console no one owns every 2 weeks but at least the console is getting updates.

Is it region locked? If i had a buddy, who could reserve one, could i sell it to someone from Japan and it would work there? I'm pretty shure, it would, but i'm also a complete noob.
another big thing is that consoles have a relatively short lifespan so the Steam Deck because it plays PC games, it will always be relevant (unless physical upgrades are made but the OG would have use for people that mostly play light games) and i'm gonna be honest here, a handheld/controller just plays better than a keyboard
those controls are awful, they are too on the top, get an ayn odin or a loki max, the deck is trash, is the same price but with awful controls and weaker than the loki.
Console got their buyer base, given how jaded *blinded* and ready and willing to lick boot to hate you if you prefer PC (i know many blocked me on Twitter to any cause of it) many didn't care of this to said something prob dumb but we'll wait and see of this sadly from IGN or god forbid the verge (Game informer, pls) or based niche gamer i'd prefer. this is a cool thing isn't too crazy with the times of the shortage to this is surely affected by, it'll do ok.
Naaaahh. Steamdeck still don't give the convenience that console gaming gives. And I don't like having to settle on medium to low setting with low battery life for a portable game. I think in the next or third iteration it can be, but I'm still playing more on my plug and play switch and PS5 than my steamdeck.
My issue with this thesis is do we really want portable PCs or to play PC games in this format? Its neat but no software was designed with this in mind, its always going to be a big compromise performance wise and how often will the portability actually be valuable? The Switch is slim but its not pocket slim, its something in a backpack or handbag. Its has one job, no thinking required, pull out play games throw back in bag. If I want a fully featured PC on the go a laptop seems like a far superior package. Its small, it can be very small, reach quite close to desktop performance, has better thermal management, far superior screen and I/O. I just see portable PCs as a niche product, gaming is about the only reason to want one. Nintendo have always ended up on top despite a hardware disadvantage each generation because of compelling first party games; their consoles develop an identity that easily compliments other systems. Steam ain't that, PC gaming isn't that and I think laptops fill a more useful device gap for 99% of buyers.
Yeah, but the steam deck isn't supposed to be a fully fledged computer. It's a computer specifically for playing games and customizing the gaming experience.
I'm pretty sure strong marketing (on Steam especially) and media coverage sold the units that are already ordered. Reasons why you would want to buy Steam Deck is mobile gaming of course, but how on earth it could supersede regular consoles which are way more powerful and more comfortable to play on? Mobile gaming has long been successful, even the first Gameboy proved there are lots of people wanting to play on the go, but they are not the majority. The regular gamer who pays more than pennies for his gaming enjoyment, play their games via TV or monitor. The fact is as long as mobile devices are not as powerful as consoles, you won't have as great experience. People want to be immersed and mobile game is kind of the opposite of that, while VR is the most immersive experience we have right now, but a problematic one. I actually do not expect Steam Deck to be any sort of massive success, but it is certainly welcome and interesting device for those who want for some reason to play nondemanding indie games and such on the go, or have a somewhat compromised experience with AAA games (think future hardware requirements). Steam Deck can run an OS like Windows, but for what reason you would install Windows on the device other than to experiment, I really don't know. The real question is, is Steam deck a Switch killer? No, it is not since it doesn't have motion controls and Nintendo's exclusive titles. It's library is extremely vast though, but many good games from Steam require mouse and keyboard, or at least are more enjoyable with these, like for example Faster Than Light or any other strategy game. I feel due to mentioned reasons that Steam Deck is an indie game platform for rather hardcore nerds and that's about it - for hardcore nerds who want to go and play outside I might add.
You know, the nintendo ds is the second best selling console and it wasn't even the most powerful portable at the time, quite the opposite... and yet that thing alone sold almost as much as the ps3 and xbox 360 combined.
@@TheSupremeSkill not quite, the 3ds only sold half as much. The Steam Deck has it's own appeal as well, game library, many sales, and like the ds it is trying to do one thing very well. Anyway, I only meant to say that even to this day there is a massive market for handheld devices and there is a itch that no 3ds, Switch or Vita was able to scratch, while the Deck is not quite there yet, it is closer than those devices.
This platform isn't going anywhere when it's biggest draw is the ability to pirate games. You can't run a business on a consumer base of non-paying customers. Sony and Nintendo are successful because people are willing to pay for their hardware and software and they aren't trying to create a haven for freeloaders. If Valve is selling these decks at a loss, the price is inevitably going to go up because customers who just want to game for free aren't gonna make up the profit difference.
Can't wait to sell my Series X for this thing in December sucks that I can't reserve because I didn't have a steam account until it came out but I get that they're trying to stop resellers.
This should be put in the context of a larger trend which is the death of Moore's law. Now that the constant rapid progress of general purpose microprocessors is slowly grinding to a halt, systems like this have become more viable. There are also other developments related to this ranging from massive software companies like Facebook wanting to fabricate their own tech stack starting from the hardware level and individuals like Jonathan Blow trying to create more efficient programming languages and paradigms to squeeze out more performance out of existing hardware.
The steam deck would be a good portable device if you didn't need to charge it every 30 minutes. Kinda defeats the portability aspect of you have to be glued to the charger if you want to play for an hour or longer.
@@Lethal_Spoon a slight over exaggeration perhaps, but isn't that kind of a feature of the steam deck? To play PC games portably? I don't think people get a steam deck to exclusively to play indie games. Even on mid settings you can barely squeeze out 1 and a half hours of playtime. On low settings 3 and a half hours. It's an impressive piece of tech for sure, but for a handheld battery life is everything. This issue will be solved in time as processors get more energy efficient or power supplies get more efficient. We're not there yet however, so at this time. Seeing what I've seen from people around me and videos on the device, I don't think it's worth it for the battery life.
@@RawrItsJuul if you're playing for longer than 1 and a half hours you're probably not going anywhere and can afford to charge it. worst case scenario you'll need a portable battery.
I knew deckers were delusional simply because they always compared the deck experience to switch. They’re not even comparable. Going from TV to handheld is so fluent on switch it’s nit even a process. Deck doesn’t let you take games into the bathroom unless you spend too much time to make it worth it.
@@TheFloodFourm I don't have a problem with people liking a Steam Deck, my problem is they point out issues of the Switch that the Deck also suffers, and calls the Deck a "Switch Killer"
The Steam Deck has one flaw: it doesn't have Nintendo games. Nintendo games are the only ones that truly focus on fun and Innovative gameplay and everything else is only there to support the first.

Console power _has never_ and is incapable of _ever_ being able to account for these communicative factors which _drive_ the Switch, _alone._
Console power _remains_ as a factor of the Bermuda Triangle of Industry suckage along side the Cinematic Universe, The Live Service game (e-sports, micro transactions, mandatory battle pass grind), Incremental console power is a misunderstanding of a _toy_ you would use until it could _no longer work._
Today, Nintendo made and _still makes_ a toy, not and never… a computer.
This is literally the ps vita 2 that we wanted!
I enjoy the valve index, the Oculus quest i hate it because of Facebook, i just ditched the quest for the index. If I get a steam deck, I want to see if I could install fallout 4 with mods.
Thanks for the vid
Mcvicker said theyre not selling Deck at a loss, the margin will be thin on the cheapeat one tho
there will always be room for a bare minimum budget option, i cant believe people play ps4 games at 20fps but they do 😒
let alone so many defend sony to ride sony's things so hard and love and i mean LOVE licking that boot..... it's weird i'm on so many sony type shit list for playing on PC to not anything playstation but i owned many systems *see what being blind and jaded to a corporation does to a mf* lol
@Libra October what does single player have to do with it? it sickening
What I find really odd, that my old PC hardware i7-2600k and GTX970 still holds up. (CPU was released in 2011 and GPU in 2014) I was surprised to see, that I was able to play Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn on 1080p 60fps.
Valve is great. Like damn dude

Also another better thing is variety it seems like most Playstation games are focused entirely on graphics

Do you really think it's normal to make piracy a selling point of a console? That's depressing.
A hacked Switch will especially run games better than a Steam Deck (which requires sub-native resolution in some games), plus you won't get any online functionality in emulators.
@@chlorobyte_projects Actually yuzu introduced online play not too long ago
@@hellacia8151 That's by emulating local wireless, also known as LDN, not the actual online services.
valve may be the company that releases 1 tech demo every 9 years and an update for a console no one owns every 2 weeks
but at least the console is getting updates.
In my eyes this is just another gadget you buy to have it lay around b/c you have too much money. :P Still I love GabeN who, to me at least, is staying true to their core customer base: GAMERS! Still I seem to have gotten too old for games, lack of time, lack of interest. If I have kids they‘ll play N64, SuperSega and PSOne. Thanks for the video :)
Yeah no
It's no where near a threat to anyone
Nice
My main console is the Xbox One X. I wouldn't have bought this thing had the steam Machine Consoles successfully broke into the console industry. I really don't care for the portable nature though I just want to play this thing on my TV because I have a large steam library but I don't care to play at my computer
If Warframe runs well under the new steam os. Im ditching windows and never coming back.
Step 1: Valve announces new hardware.
Step 2: PC fans go crazy about the prospects.
Step 3: Articles and video essays are made proclaiming "new Valve hardware is a game changer! Everyone is gonna HAVE to buy it!!!!!!"
Step 4: No one but enthusiasts actually buys Valve hardware at release.
Step 5: Enthusiasts release cope articles and video essays about how people just need to give it time. "New Valve hardware is different from old Valve hardware. Give it time; people will catch on!"
Step 6: No one but enthusiasts continue to buy Valve hardware.
Step 7: Enthusiasts release articles and video essays saying "of course only enthusiasts bought Valve hardware. It was never meant to be a mass product anyway."
Step 8: Valve announces new hardware and the cycle continues.
that's the youtube video essay industry for ya
bunch of dudes that think they are much smarter then they really are
it's really arrogant, honestly
Is it region locked? If i had a buddy, who could reserve one, could i sell it to someone from Japan and it would work there? I'm pretty shure, it would, but i'm also a complete noob.
As far as I know, your steam account will be the region lock. The device is open, you can even dual boot into Windows.
Ah shit, now I won't get Bloodborne for PC anymore.
another big thing is that consoles have a relatively short lifespan
so the Steam Deck because it plays PC games, it will always be relevant (unless physical upgrades are made but the OG would have use for people that mostly play light games)
and i'm gonna be honest here, a handheld/controller just plays better than a keyboard
steam deck no longer has a supply issue
those controls are awful, they are too on the top, get an ayn odin or a loki max, the deck is trash, is the same price but with awful controls and weaker than the loki.
Why couldn't he count to 3?
Naaaahh. Steamdeck still don't give the convenience that console gaming gives. And I don't like having to settle on medium to low setting with low battery life for a portable game.
I think in the next or third iteration it can be, but I'm still playing more on my plug and play switch and PS5 than my steamdeck.
Competition is good
Old liabrary should be supported
It's a computer specifically for playing games and customizing the gaming experience.
so the wii u game pad came back as the steam deck to get revenge on its creators!?!? (steam deck lore lol)
seems heavy
In the hands-on demonstrations, they were surprised at how little the weight was to what they expected (Around Aug 5 I believe?)
@@user-pq4by2rq9y The success of Nintendo's handhelds are due to their family friendly nature and cheap price. These don't really apply to Steam Deck.
“I can’t tell the difference between Spider-Man on PS4 and PS5”. Look at Peter Parker’s face.
looks basically the same
Linux is far more customizable and light weight smth as light weight windows is an illusion.
No f-ing way
This should be put in the context of a larger trend which is the death of Moore's law.
Kinda defeats the portability aspect of you have to be glued to the charger if you want to play for an hour or longer.
if you have to recharge it every 30 minutes, you’re playing a beefy as hell game
@@Lethal_Spoon that's not an argument, just an excuse.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand this didn't do much.
