  • Today Christian brings you a cool upcycle tutorial. Ever have a pair of jeans that doesn't fit, got ripped too many times, or you just don't wear? well, here's a solution that will make you or someone in your life very happy.
    Christian needed an apron for grilling and for the cooking segments over at / afterschoolshow , and decided to make his own. Sure, he bought a pair of jeans at the thrift store (seriously, they have so many size and style choices), but that's still upcycling, right? Follow along with the easy steps to make your own.
    Share pics of YOUR creations by tagging Christian on / dadsews or / dadsews - He'd LOVE to see your finished project!

    I would have loved to see the back of the apron. You talked about the waistband and button, but, you never showed us. I loved your project, but, could you just follow-up with pic of the finished apron? Loved it, though....

    If they are very large jeans, like a 42" waist, each leg will make an apron?

  • @Makyrie

    One more comment! Why’d you pick the pockets out??? Why didn’t you just cut around the pocket with a 1” -1 1/2” of extra fabric just, just just at the top fold it over a bit to make a hem and then just sew around the three sides! Then you’d have a 2 TWO compartment pocket..... Sooo cool! Dude what a lot of extra work.. well you did it perfect. Great look. Oh and plus you could have sectioned off the back pocket and VOILA a lot of pocket. ROFLMAO!!!

    That was cool. But you left out the waist tie (or belt, or whatever). I'll just have to make that part up. ;) Love your slogan, "Sew, Fail, Repeat".

    I think I'll cut it wide enough to keep the belt loops intact, because I can imagine uses for them: (a) hold earbud wires out of my work zone; (b) hang pens and tools off of; etc.

    Pretty cool idea. I'm not sure why you didn't just sew both pant legs together to get wider fabric if you wanted a bigger apron though. 🤷‍♀️. Also, get yourself a pair of Gingher sewing shears. Very high quality, and the company with sharpen them for you whenever they need it.

    I think I might try this. I have some jeans that are in retirement. For the length did you just cut below the back pocket? I even have a denim skort, skirt with shorts, that I upcycled. I added some eyelet lace to the edge. I love it, but I have to do something to it cause it's rather worn. Any ideas I could do with it?

    • @DadSews
      @DadSews  6 лет назад

      Maybe try bias tape for the worn bit? I moved my pattern around until I was cutting the easiest part of the fabric and was sure to seamrip and remove excess pieces.

      Also with some jeans that are out there. Especially for women, they have quite a bit of stretch to them. I know it's easier to work with men's jeans as they don't have as much give in them as women's do. However what kind of needle would be preferred when working with women's jeans? A denim needle or a stretch needle? Unfortunately not all jeans are created equal these days. Are there any other tips for this as I don't have a machine that start off with a comma and at least 3 zeros after it? It works great as a beginner, but I wonder if a project like this might be beyond not only my skill level and/or the capability of my machine.

    I do appreciate how you made the apron but your "fun facts" and "brand dropping" is too much. Your video would be half the length just by not talking so much and just show more of your technique.
