    Hi Greg. Your video was very educational and explained better then any other video we've watched. We can hardly wait to get started. My husband and I are going to build our own house as we own our property. Thank you for expertly explaining the skillion roof structure in such patient manner.

    Thank you for the video. This might be the solution that I need to be able to add onto my back porch/shop. Once I realized that the addition would have a 12/1 roof pitch, I gave up on the idea, until I saw this video. Now I am reconsidering it. Thanks again

    Hi!
    In your illustration, the peak point, I’m doing the same thing & I ripped the top plate to 3 degrees to match the angle of the roof, so sheathing sits flat with no gap.
    Is that acceptable?

    Can one build this same type roof with an open floor plan by using double or triple LVL beams across the top and letting the end wall with extra support carry the load?

    Hi
    How do you nail the rafters for a skillion roof? Also how do you use a hurricane tie or similar to stop lifting?
    Thank you...your videos are VERY helpful.

    Hi Greg I have a similar project like this but on a remodel. The higher roof will not be sloping away but towards and onto the lower roof. I’m planning on having windows to let light in for the second floor. We would be going from about 26’ high on the high side to 12-14’ on the lower end. Is there any sloping issues or problems that you foresee happening?

    I wonder what a structural engineer would say about the lean-to on a ledger board alternatives with I-joists. My guess is that you could get the lean to I-joists onto a double top plate and jack studs in each cavity of the support wall with the beveled plate option from the I-joist specifier guide and this would be covered under prescriptive specification without an engineering stamp. Would love to know an engineer's thoughts on this. Or any building inspectors/plan reviewers out there :)

    If the perlin on top the rafter , the rise of the roof will increase??

    Your work is Excellent. 4 yrs ago I built a 12x18 screen porch with a 1-1/2:12 low pitch roof at my northern WI cabin. I used joist hangers at my ledger board with a small seat cut so all sat flush in the hanger. Its built to withstand a 43 lbs/sq-ft snow load + 10lb dead load (just above Code). However, I'd like to go back and double up my rafters to increase my snow load capacity. The tricky part is the one side of the joist hangers all being in the way if I sister on additional rafters. Have you ever had this scenario arise?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  Год назад

      Maybe it will be better to add another rafter in between the existing ones with a new hanger that won't be in the way. If not then you could always remove old hangers and install double hangers.

    I’m trying to build something similar for a chicken run. Both sides will have 8 foot walls made up of 4x4 studs, 3 feet on center spacing and hardware cloth between the studs. It’s essentially an 18x18 square. The roof will be polycarbonate clear panels. Since the roof it’s light I’m hoping I can get by with 4x4 post with two 2x6 vertical boards with 1/2 inch spacing between for the “top plate”, and the adding the necessary height to achieve my desired slope. I’m not sure if what I’m saying makes sense, but your videos helped me change/improve my original gambrel roof design. Thank you

    Hello, how do you determine how many tresses a person needs on a 40’ long building?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 года назад +1

      You would need to check with the truss manufacturing company or the supplier of the trusses. The design of the roof truss, span and roofing materials I'll play an important role in answering your question also.

    Do you think it's possible to attach two skillion roofs to an existing hipped roof?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 года назад +1

      It would all depend upon the design, but yes I think it could be possible.

      Im doing a hilltop cabin. I used 8x8 hemlock piers that I burned and treated with linseed/turps. Set in concrete. Then used same for carrier beams. Insulating in between floor joists before advantek goes down.

    What are the benefits to a skillion roof?

    • @gregvancom

      It's just another design. I can't think of any advantages over a simple gable roof that would stick out in my mind.

      With windows, you allow more natural lighting Into to the interior of the building.

    Do you really have to have that center wall frame? Can you just replace it with a solid beam going across giving you more open space in the building?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  Год назад

      I've seen them built with beams instead of walls.
