    Such a magnificent composer, who is sadly often forgotten and neglected.

      ...with that he shares only the fate of many great composers who rarely make it onto the radio, even more rarely on CD and almost never make it into concert halls...and his legacy is actually doing comparatively well...

    One word to describe this symphony: Epic

  • @robhurford747

    I strongly believe, in a genuinely schenkerian analysis' perspective, that the beauty of the WHOLE Symphony is summed up in ONE NOTE in particular. That wonderfully played note at 25:14 that emerges from the refined texture of the orchestration like the final touch of an artist completing a true Masterpiece of orchestral interpretation. Or am I maybe wrong?

    A gorgeous, glorious, dramatic, driven, exotic, exhilarating, powerfully moving symphony. I hadn't heard it recently, and I was once again taken by surprise at its emotional impact, once again bringing me to tears. Noseda's infectious, energetic commitment to this superb work communicated to everyone, and a great musical experience took place.

    Non conoscevo Casella. Questa sinfonia l'ho ascoltata al teatro lirico di Cagliari il 12.10.19. E' stata una sorprendente esibizione. Definisco l'autore un grande della musica sinfonica e un grande arrangiatore. Sorpreso favorevolmente. Peccato non averlo oggi con noi. Formidabile!!

    Casella’s Masterpiece played beautifully by Noseda and Frankfurt, who truly brought the heart and soul of this work to life with all the love and passion it requires.
    Thanks to Bom & Quotenwagnerianer for bringing to my attention the completion dates of Casella and Mahler's symphonies, I had been given misinformation previously.
    Anyhow, Casella’s 2nd symphony, IMHO, equaled or in some places even surpassed Mahler in vitality, drive and spirited momentum, not to mention the gorgeous slow movement and the thunderous finale that is on par with Richard Strauss. This work is monumental!
    Casella and this Symphony were honored in the novel MY NAZI NEMESIS, an award-winning dark thriller. Thank you, Casella, for this masterpiece, and the inspiration it engendered.

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal 6 лет назад +1

      Since Mahler's 2nd was finished in 1894, that means that Casella would have finished this symphony around age 10. Somehow, that sounds unlikely. The date of completion I read most is 1909. That doesn't make it any less impressive, by the way.

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer 5 лет назад +2

      The symphony was composed between 1908 and 1909. Therefore he had the numbers 1-7 of the Mahler symphonies to draw from and he had set the 7th for piano four hands by that time.

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal 3 года назад +1

      @@Quotenwagnerianer Theoretically, yes. But music didn't circulate quite as fast then as it does today, and the first editions of scores were prohibitively expensive, even for conservatories. The cheaper editions were the ones sold most, but these would appear later. In practice, I think it's unlikely Casella would have heard anything more recent than Mahler's fifth before beginning work on this symphony in 1908.

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal 3 года назад +1

      The big problem of these high romantic behemoths is generally their lack of momentum, and to me Mahler's works suffer from this more than most.

    • @richdisilvio4591
      @richdisilvio4591 3 года назад

      @@bomcabedal Agreed. I love sections of Mahler’s symphonies but listening from start to finish is a chore. Casella’s 2nd Symphony is different and is an exciting venture all the way through. He may have been influenced by Mahler, but Casella crafted a full-rounded gem here.

    Ah, to be a concert organist get to splash out that massive closing chord on 32-foot pipes.... It must be worth the 50-minute wait. At least I hope so for the organist (perhaps he only walks in 5 minutes before the end). A very impressive and awesome symphony, though clearly under the spell of Mahler. The closing pages almost outdo Mahler in grandiosity.

    Hier kann man wieder mal sehen wie unbeweglich die Klassikszene ist.
    Noseda war es auch, der die allererste CD-Einspielung dieses Werks gemacht hat. Und anstatt, dass das dazu führt, dass sich jemand anderes mal aufrafft die Sinfonie aufzuführen, muss er auch noch selber dafür sorgen, dass mal ein deutsches Orchester das Werk im Konzert spielt.
    Ein weiteres Beispiel wäre Bruckner's 9. mit dem vervollständigten Finale. Das führt außer Simon Rattle auch niemand regelmäßig auf obwohl Bruckner nie wollte, dass die Sinfonie als Torso aufgeführt wird. Aber man ist das nach 100 Jahren halt so gewohnt, also warum das ändern? Traurig.
