I've been afraid of this for years

  • I think there's an issue within the creative community that few people are caring to address about courses and "premium" education. After years of going back and forth on how I could approach this in a way that's authentic to me and genuine to my audience, I think I've finally made the right decision.
    Thank you for being here. I built this for everyone. Cheers

    Honestly a great take on the subject. I think that there are some amazing courses out there, but it's true that they are definitely few and far between. The vast majority tend to over-promise and under deliver. Lovely vid btw - the shot looks so good!

    Great one Ryan. Let me add a perspective here: If 10 people out of 100 who bought a course made $10K on the next month, it's not a false promise although difficult. It drives sales but it's too flashy. People are starting to run away from this kind of promises.
    Also, the "cool kids club" and premium pricing is a brand vision/strategy from the creator, as it is for your brand a course being valuable and affordable at the same time. I understand both sides.
    I think the RUclips community has a problem with digital products because we learned here everything for free but there's people who would rather happily pay a $1000 to learn directly from you, because they've only connected with your way of teaching.

    You're right although a lot of the stigma that has developed has also come from some people selling courses on skills/experience they haven't really gotten or aren't' good enough in, so they end up teaching it to make a living. Nothing wrong with it, film schools or universities have been doing it for a long time. It's simply an extension into the digital education space and people should be aware of it. I've seen some 'creators' selling courses on breaking into the film industry/DPing for example even though the course really only teaches videography/one man band type work (nothing wrong with that career path btw!). This just strikes me as being dishonest and it's playing on the Hollywood dream that a lot of people have that are in/want to be in video. As long as people are transparent about what their actual niche/skills are, it's a great thing. Just my two cents. Best of luck!

    "From Hero to Zero, join my course and learn how to become a full time slacker who's not getting anywhere in life even though he's really trying but clearly not trying hard enough!" That'll be my course title.

    What you shared is exactly how I've been feeling about our filmmaking and creator space when it comes to some of the "premium" education being offered online. I've been approached by a handful of people, all charging several thousands for their entry level offer with big promises of results. While I can see myself with 10 years in the business benefitting from something like that, it's left me wondering what about the folks who are just starting out, that need something more in-depth than what's readily free on RUclips. Anyhow, this video hit me in the feels because access to education is something I've always been passionate about. I'd love to check out your course and see who else I can recommend it to!

    • @RyanKao
      @RyanKao  6 месяцев назад +3

      Wow. Alex, this is a really good feeling to hear. Honestly, I was a bit hesitant to approach this video in this way but now I'm relieved to say I'm glad I did. It's truly a territory in our space that I feel is very polarizing and somewhat uncomfortable in some ways. Thanks for being honest and genuine as always. I appreciate you!!

    • @itsalexoh
      @itsalexoh 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@RyanKao Definitely! I think the "premium" stuff has its place, especially if it includes really custom consulting or private 1-on-1 time with the creator to discuss some deeper industry insights, but I love what you wrote about "I built this for everyone." For anyone else reading this, I'm not saying creators shouldn't have expensive courses. I'm all for creators making more money, especially for those providing big value... but for most of history, education has only been accessible to people in positions of privilege, whether that's university, private tutoring, or even in the way the home environment you grow up in affects your ability to learn. (and that's a serious problem) I am hopeful when I see creators teaching for free on RUclips and partner with platforms like Skillshare to provide that next level education at a price that is accessible to many more people. Anyhow, this is getting way too deep and long haha. Keep up the great work Ryan!

    I think the problem with most of the shade thrown at classes/courses is that they run 500-1000 dollars and offer mostly stuff you can find on RUclips, I looked at a few of the premuim ones and most of the first half was basic how to use a camera stuff and although learning some of the transistions looked great it wasn't worth the money. That being said I love skill share, its incredible value and the courses are nicely focused with assets and material to follow and learn with. Defo will have a look at your classes .
