I have been painting for 30 years professionally and I charge the roller before I put it on the wall like I was shown during my apprenticeship and I have never had the issue you mention. Hi Spencer. Another superb video:). In the UK we cannot get hold of clear caulking, only in sealant form. Can you recommend something to replace the clear caulk?
Individually strapped, you cannot unravel the paint-the shrink wrap melts the sticky on the tape and makes it impossible to unravel.. Not the case however with multi-unit sleeves of tape.
@@spencercolgan hmmm thats strange,i definetely cannot get on with sherwin williams brand tape, much too thick of a paper.Sometimes i do however rarely get a roll of 3m and the first few times unraveling it,it will splinter,But goes right away,we always buy the multi unit sleeves tho have you tried the new 4 pack of orange frog tape?
What clear caulk is your favorite for taping? Alex plus? Alex flex? (You answered later, but i'm leaving this up in case you've changed or something. Great video btw!
Excellent video! If Iwe paint the baseboards with Alkyd enamel without protecting the walls above. Is there going to be any issues later when I paint walls with Latex?
@@spencercolgan That's really interesting to hear. (I"m a remodeler, jack of all trades, master of none.) I've always pushed the dry times of caulking but never just went full hog and applied paint right away. I normally resist caulking and taping because of all the problems of letting caulk dry on tape, then pulling a clean line. Amazing the amount of stuff I don't know. Time to buy some clear caulking, Thanks!
I was in the painting business for 50 years. At least this guy is not using a little 2 1/2 inch sash brush on walls like most RUclipsrs. At 15:18 you can clearly see chunks of texture in the corner where the walls and ceiling meet. You can't make a straight line painting over that. The way to do it is to cut out the chunks. Use a 1" very thin and flexible putty knife and run it back and forth with a light grip until the texture falls out and you have a straight line. Now painting a straight line is possible. As far as using a mini roller horizontally on a textured wall, it's totally unnecessary. I've never needed one on an non-textured wall. Just make sure you don't have too much paint in the roller when you roll up into the brushed area. Now, around 23:14 he is using tape, caulking and trim paint to get a straight line. A master painter is able to make a straight enough line to begin with and this is unnecessary. I hate to paint behind painters who use caulking unnecessarily. The caulking eliminates the 90 degrees between the wall and trim and you end up with a curved corner which means you have to draw a line that looks like it is still 90 degrees. On a scale of one to ten I would rate his skill at 7 at best. To do a master class on painting would take a master painter.
No need to roll out brush marks on a high wall. The higher the wall , the harder it is to see imperfections. But ideally you roll into wet cuts at the top of your wall.
Great video, but I used the same method you did earlier in the video by putting a low adhesive masking tape on the wall to get a straight line. When I was finished and pulled the tape, paint came off right down to the plaster. Any tips on how to avoid this?bearing in mind I pulled the tape at an angle and towards me. Thanks. Ps the tape I used was frog 🐸tape.
1. Did you apply the paint that came up? That’s key to trying to answer you. If you did, was it cured? Was it painted onto the surface it was applied to that would assure that it was sticky enough? Such as , was the surface scuffed you with a sanding sponge? Was it too shiny that would help it come off and pull the plaster too?
@@spencercolgan Yes I painted the surface. It was dry if that's what you mean by cured. It wasn't scuffed up and I used tape that was low adhesive. If I remember correctly and I could be wrong here, from your vid . did you apply the tape to a freshly painted surface, I mean dry to the touch. If you did this is basically what I did and was shocked when the paint came off.
Very good Tutorial on painting! Picked up many tips to make painting easier BUT, you need to find a new cameraman and audio man. Thanks for the great tips!
@@spencercolgan Thanks for the content. I'm a small, green, one man operation and can use the pep talk sometimes. I'm working on a decent size interior job right now and 5" primed base molding is soon on the agenda.
Hey Spencer I want to do your clear caulking trick to get prefect straight lines but in the UK it's very difficult to get clear caulk I saw this other trick on RUclips and I wanted your thoughts To get a straight line between the trim and the wall first you mask the painted trim and then apply a light coat of the trim paint in the gap between the tape and the wall. This creates a seal so your wall paint doesn't bleed onto the trim. After this dries you can cut and paint over this and remove the tape for a straight crisp line. What do you think? Or is there any other way if I can't get clear caulk Please advise
Check this out: ruclips.net/video/R8J7xOyjmr0/видео.html I use the EXACT procedure you’re referring to in this video!!!! Newbies however, I don’t recommend that to. Why? Because they may not keep the paint from bleeding.
@@spencercolgan So if I can't get clear caulking I just use a dry brush for each coat. Got it thanks Spencer there's one more thing I need clarity on If I mask the painted trim and cut in the first coat with dry brush as we just discussed. Then I take off the tape while the paint is still wet to get a straight line and role the wall. Now for the second coat do I need to mask the trim again and repeat the process? Do I mask twice to protect the trim or is there a better way?
I have a really dumb newbie question...why don't I just tape the ceiling edges (same way you did the trim) to prevent my wall paint from touching the ceiling? Is it just because that would take too long? I don't fully trust myself to do four walls 12' in length (48 linear feet) without going over even *once*.
Bird it’s an excellent question but it’s almost physically impossible to be looking up at the ceiling and keep your tape line straight; your body loses its perspective once you turn your body around and you’re looking upward
@@spencercolgan Wow. Never even contemplated that! You are an excellent teacher, sir. Thanks for a very clear and helpful video and quick, concise, air-tight follow-up!
Spencer , i’am confused , at 34:40 you said don’t use white caulking, use clear instead but , when you were whipping off the excess over the paper , that caulking coming off of your finger was white , wasn’t it ? 🤔
If you don't have a partner who is rolling behind you as you cut in, and you are concerned about the cut-ins drying before you have the chance to roll, can you let the cut-ins dry - and roll a couple of hours later? Thanks!
It’s an excellent excellent thought provoking question. You are obviously a perfectionist! Your answer is no; and I am I am going to post a video below after I finish this comment I will simply edit my comment to include a video; the halo effect is what you will get if you do let it dry and come back later On. please see the video that I will post momentarily Here is the video of what will happen if you let it dry ruclips.net/video/jfAcyZaPm-k/видео.html

@@MC_1993 Thank you very much! I would stick with a lamb wool roller and a Purdy 3 inch and a four-inch brush. The effect of the roller cannot be matched without resorting to the spray machine

Been watching your videos and definitely needed a refresher. When you said the pva primer is bad I had flashbacks to sherwin I think guys were getting that for 15$ a gallon in bulk. Always with complaints.
I have had plenty of customers tell me that when they pay for a pro painter they get worried when said pro painter uses tape because they say “ I could have done that myself and saved their fee”
You know and I know that even with tape and a $50 brush they couldn’t do it; tape is the way professionals perfect the line; I have to be honest, even professionals who paint very nice lines could easily perfect the aligns with teeth but I don’t wanna do it and I understand that; my lines are razor sharp
Spencer instead of tagging the wall with the paint for the baseboards why don't you just put some frog tape across the bottom of the wall it's so much faster than coming back and having to touch up your wall.. takes hardly no time to put a piece of tape and caulk, now you can splash your paint on and then remove the tape AND YOUR DONE!. You should also be using frog tape to cut that straight line in the corner I don't think you're using the right tape ,you got too much adhesion on there it could pull the surface off . thank you brother..i learned how to do vinyl wall covering at work many yrs ago..and repairing it ,patching it..i love the challange.. thanks for all your tips and tricks......lol thanks for the breathing advise hahahahhaha.
just an FYI ... it's " A - LEX " ( long A sound ) then LEX as in Acrylic LatEX.... EVERYONE calls it ALEX simply because that's what it looks like and lack of knowledge.
You also know that with tape and caulk your line might look straight but it still isn’t perfect because the paint dries at a different rate than the caulk and if you don’t take off your tape fast enough you could get into trouble and it is also messy getting rid of the wet tape.
Brilliant video, one of the best around but im biting my nails watching how you caulk it’s really frustrating, I’m sure you can do better then that, no hate speech here just honesty

$2.50 for caulk… those were the good old days! Thanks Uncle Joe! 😮😢
Instead of taping along the door frame or 1/4 round, why not use a edging tool? I used these and got good results.
Do I get a certificate of completion after watching?
Very good Tutorial on painting! Picked up many tips to make painting easier BUT, you need to find a new cameraman and audio man. Thanks for the great tips!
Will caulking the bottom of the base cause issues later with expansion? Or aren't you using enough to matter.
Not an issue at all sir.
@@spencercolgan Thanks for the content. I'm a small, green, one man operation and can use the pep talk sometimes. I'm working on a decent size interior job right now and 5" primed base molding is soon on the agenda.
Is that a straight cut 4”? Purdy clear cut or nylox? I usually use a 2 1/2” Chinex or Wooster alpha
Straight XL Medium Stiff
Thank You
Hey Spencer
I want to do your clear caulking trick to get prefect straight lines but in the UK it's very difficult to get clear caulk
I saw this other trick on RUclips and I wanted your thoughts
To get a straight line between the trim and the wall first you mask the painted trim and then apply a light coat of the trim paint in the gap between the tape and the wall. This creates a seal so your wall paint doesn't bleed onto the trim. After this dries you can cut and paint over this and remove the tape for a straight crisp line.
What do you think?
Or is there any other way if I can't get clear caulk
Please advise

I use the EXACT procedure you’re referring to in this video!!!! Newbies however, I don’t recommend that to. Why? Because they may not keep the paint from bleeding.
@@spencercolgan
So if I can't get clear caulking I just use a dry brush for each coat. Got it thanks
Spencer there's one more thing I need clarity on
If I mask the painted trim and cut in the first coat with dry brush as we just discussed.
Exactly correct but it dries clear; good point it was clear caulking that I was using
Spencer Colgan Wallpaper & Painting . Got it !
I do the same type of work you do and I really appreciate your videos . Keep it up Spencer !!
Zarco NY And I appreciate people viewing my channel
If you don't have a partner who is rolling behind you as you cut in, and you are concerned about the cut-ins drying before you have the chance to roll, can you let the cut-ins dry - and roll a couple of hours later? Thanks!
It’s an excellent excellent thought provoking question. You are obviously a perfectionist! Your answer is no; and I am I am going to post a video below after I finish this comment I will simply edit my comment to include a video; the halo effect is what you will get if you do let it dry and come back later On. please see the video that I will post momentarily
Here is the video of what will happen if you let it dry
ruclips.net/video/jfAcyZaPm-k/видео.html
I have posted a video of what will happen as a result of the scenario in your excellent question.
@@spencercolgan THANKS!!!
@@spencercolgan I will study it. You are a very valuable resource.
Anyone know what color that blue paint is? lol
Great vid but this guy is a pro with his brush, 18:05 is a recipe to get splattered paint on ceiling
You’re right
@@spencercolgan don’t worry, you’re still the best painter I’ve seen on RUclips. I used to run a sherwin williams in shrewsbury nj. I know all the products you’re using. The paint additive to reduce strokes? Great call. I can tell we would’ve had a good working relationship lol. All the new guys are big on sprayers.. but the sprayers maintence isn’t worth it. I like you’re style and methods, truly a pro ! Thank you for your vids.
Question. I’m repainting my small bathroom but don’t feel like getting rollers. Have a bunch of good brushes. Can I just use brushes and still get a good finish?
@@MC_1993 Thank you very much! I would stick with a lamb wool roller and a Purdy 3 inch and a four-inch brush.
The effect of the roller cannot be matched without resorting to the spray machine
@@spencercolgan thanks for the response. I’ll take your advice and do it the right way with a roller. Using duration in a bathroom..with popcorn ceiling. Been watching your videos and definitely needed a refresher. When you said the pva primer is bad I had flashbacks to sherwin I think guys were getting that for 15$ a gallon in bulk. Always with complaints.
You sound like Willam Defoe:))
That tape could remove the finish on stained trim.
You’re correct. In that case, I’d go with yellow frog tape Thomas.
Thanks what's wrong with blue. It's cheaper than the yellow and could still do the caulk technique.
@@spencercolgan Thanks for the motivation. You're an amazing Painter
Thomas Komos that’s an awesome compliments
Thank you so much; since you wrote this, I have purchased green frog tape and I will be using it; thank you for your advice
@@spencercolgan yes sir. Great tips spencer thank you brother.
Doesn't all that caulk ruin your expensive brushes
Not at all. Water soluble.
just an FYI ... it's " A - LEX " ( long A sound ) then LEX as in Acrylic LatEX.... EVERYONE calls it ALEX simply because that's what it looks like and lack of knowledge.
How did you know that
👍👌👏👏🏅
I think I love you now................................................................................................

Why do americans all use such a large brush for cutting in?
Its painting.....😂 do you do any other type lf work that needs skills?
You also know that with tape and caulk your line might look straight but it still isn’t perfect because the paint dries at a different rate than the caulk and if you don’t take off your tape fast enough you could get into trouble and it is also messy getting rid of the wet tape.
Excellent point
WOW... ANOTHER NEGATIVE CRITIC WHEN SOMEONE GIVING GOOD INFO. U MUST B 1OF THEM PPL.
😂
Not good culking my friend
Brilliant video, one of the best around but im biting my nails watching how you caulk it’s really frustrating, I’m sure you can do better then that, no hate speech here just honesty
He hasn't really got a clue about being a professional,.
You’re weird. Look at all the compliments I’ve received on this video? Are you well sir?
