"The Messenger" is the only acoustic song ever written by Linkin Park. The song is very mellow, the guitar is very soothing filled with husky vocals. On February 22, 2011, at a press conference in California, Chester Benington (Linkin Park vocalist) said that this song is for teenagers. He added that teenagers sometimes grow into adults and things can get tough, so finding a home is the only answer for them to live.

Bennington told the story behind the song in an interview with Artist Direct: "That song actually came to me almost entirely all at once. The second I heard the chord progression, the melody came and then the words came. It literally dawned on me like a flood, which is very rare. Usually, songs come in pieces, but this song came right away! Thank God, there's technology in my phone that allows me to record ideas whenever they arrive. Initially, I started the song off with a line that's not in there anymore. I began with, 'You are a child with so many choices. The hardest always make us cry.' Right away, I knew I was going to write a letter to my kids, basically. It's telling them you're getting ready to go out into the world, you're going to get kicked around, it's going to be tough and you're going to find yourself in some painful situations, but here's what's important - you're always going to be loved by your family, and that will always get you through. That's going to be the one lifeline that you have which will pull you through all of this chaos around you.
Eventually, what ended up coming out of that is the song you hear on the record. It's such a vulnerable, open and very honest song in that way. We really felt like we wanted to replicate that original recording of the guitar and vocal in the phone as much as possible.
We recorded the vocal, and we didn't put any special sauce on it or anything. We didn't double the vocals, and we didn't try to go for the perfect performance. I just sang it with my heart. Brad [Delson] played guitar. Mike [Shinoda] sat in the other room, and we all played it together. It was presented in the simplest way, and that's what we've got."

I teared up just by reading it, after crying over this official video of that song. its one of my favourite, not only its beautiful, and thoughtful, profound, vulnerable, bright, and just warms you, but also because its exactly That raw, and they kept it that way coz its all about those "simple" sounds, the message, and raw, authentic, angelic voice that speaks from the heart to the heart. Where can I see perhaps the video of that interview ? (where he said that) I knew before that it is addressed to his kids, but i had no idea that it came instantly to him and that the verse was different at first.. its always so great to know smth more, open smth for yourself about him. His songs (whether LP, DBS or STP) always get me to the core, and at times even if i listen to same songs 36429836439 time, I can still find smth new in it , whether in sounds, or even meaning, perspective, for myself or even for him. Its on going discovery, on going learning, and on going emotion, and heart (never ending) that he has attached to the art, which in turn will keep him alive forever!

I am not the biggest linkin park fan however I used to back in 2007 2010 I stopped listening because I moved country leaving my friends back home and my friends over seas only listened rap so I was lost in the sauce now I came back after life left me blind and love kept me kind...their lyrics just makes thousand percent more sense than it did when I was a teenager... this literally happened just now, thought i should share. my cat is usually super quiet, rarely meows. i was feeling a little sad and played this on speakers. i was also singing along. suddenly my cat came to me and said "meow", she literally came really close, climbed on to my legs (i was sitting on the floor), and meowed to my face as loud as she could. i think even my cat could feel the sadness in chester's singing. or may be i'm just over-thinking it...

I still remeber almost 5 years ago I was 18 years old, woke up in the morning and heard that Chester died. I grabed my guitar and learned this song, what a beautiful song this is. I couldnt belive he died, I grew up with his music like so many ppl did and still to this day his music helps me go through things in life.
