I just chronographed some 124gr HST ammo through my 16" M&P FPC and 5" & 4.25" M&P 2.0 pistols. I then put this info into a ballistics calculator and found trajectories for 10y, 15y, 20y, and 25yrds zeros. Turns out that a 28yrd zero gave a tad bit flatter trajectory from point blank to 100yrds with maximum rise over line of sight being +1.3" @ 60yrds and -1.00" @ 100yrds vs. 25yrd zero = +1.8" @ 55y-70y and 0.0" @ 100yrds. This was with a muzzle velocity of 1335fps and a 3" height over bore dot on my PCC. I shot 10y,15y, 20y, 25y,40y, 50y, 60y, 70y, 80y,and 100yrds to confirm. And a week later this video popped up. Great to see you actually showing the actual confirmation of each zero at different yardages out to 100yrds. I had watched countless videos looking for someone showing this info for 9mm on RUclips to no avail. That's what prompted me to do it myself a week ago. Glad to see someone actually put out a video showing it. Great stuff, & I'm subscribed.
Would love to see this again but with a target camera, that way we could see where the rounds were hitting the whole time. I like the 15 yard zero because at 50 it’s pretty close and i rarely shoot my pistol past 50. I think I’ll try the 25 yard zero though it’s probably the only pistol zero i haven’t tried yet. I like that it gives more room to make sure that windage is good. When i first got my pistol dot i zeroed it at 5 yards, went back to 50 and it was going off the side of the target. I definitely gotta get me a tripod, I’ve been zeroing off hand with my pistol.
Nice video. Good data. I would like to see this redone all through one pistol and one dot. More time consuming, but less variables. Personally gonna stick with 10m zero because I suspect your closer range shots at 25m zero are all high and 50m+ were closer to center mass. For EDC I’d prefer my likely scenario of a self defense situation be as accurate as possible in the event I’m shooting around barriers or other people. 25m+ defensive shoot situation is very unlikely.
I may just leave that up to everyone to do on their own if they want to. Regardless, if multiple pistols introduce too many variables, even if I do it with the same pistol, it won't match everyone else's pistol, anymore than my pistols match each other. And there would still be too many variables for everyone to walk away with concrete results.
@@OperatoroverallsI get that. It wouldn’t match everyone’s setup, but it would remove some variables on your specific test. Would have also been cool to see what the impacts looked like at each distance to follow rise and drop. Just my thoughts. Cool video.👍
Good job with the setup. Constructive criticism: the tripod idea was great, if still a little wobbly looking in the mount. A second camera on the target would help us visualize the impacts, and also record them for yourself to know what, exactly, is going on at each distance.
@@chuckhightower2730 the little bit of slop in the tripod was on purpose. As to not induce any deflection. Torquing on the frame will cause the POI to shift drastically. And I suppose I will work on buying a second camera
@ I totally understand. Thanks for the reply. Even your phone as the 2nd camera would be fine if you’re shooting at cardboard. Seems like you’ve got a good channel starting up.
I think what i had for breakfast that morning will matter more than my zero distance if I’m ever actually in a gunfight. Just make sure you are zeroed and practice regularly. Come shoot USPSA and get skills that are hard to train on your own. Good video regardless!
Would’ve been sweet to see the impacts on target with a different camera up close to see where bullets impacted target at different yards. All in all great video.
I run 124’s so I guess the 25 is the best sidenote still looking for that 300 blackout bolt action but I picked up a Henry 45 long colt lever last week! What’s your favorite lever action caliber?
@ that was my thought too when I was going down the rack 357/38 or 45-70 but I want the stainless and gray marlin 4570 and then I came across that 45 LC and was like wow I already stock that Ammo from my judge soooo 🤷🏼♂️
@Operatoroveralls it's got less target spread than the 50 yard when shooting out to 200. That's the furthest shot I can get where im at so it works for me. Same with the pistols though, gotta check that drift as it gets further out there.
Good work. Didn't catch if the barrels are all the same length? Because different length would be different velocity meaning potentially different groups. The 25 yd dropped rounds at 100. If the 20yd zero did, the 25yd zero did.
@Operatoroveralls true not much at all of a difference, but combined with zero distance it can amplify or reduce it. Nice job! Useful info for many new (or even experienced) rds shooters.
25 yds is the way, use it for both comp and carry. I had issues with a 15 yd zero at match with some vertical stringing (landing high) on small steel plates at around 30 yds.
@ I think the 25 may be more resilient to changes in load, might be a fun test for the channel with 115, 124, and 147. Also I run a 5” PDP, frickin love the platform.
Your test looked legit but honestly the results confuse me. All the ballistic calculations I'm seeing show that a 9mm 25 yard zero should be impacting 10" low at 100 yards. And that a 25yard zero shouldn't have hardly any impacts above the point of aim because the trajectory is basically flat from 0 to 25 yards and then the bullet begins to drop drastically after that.
Yeah. Surprised me as well. I'll just chalk it up to, that's why it's important for people to proof their own stuff. Ballistic calculators are a great starting point. But they need to be trued, to your specifics.
I agree 25 yards is the best however I put red dots only on full sized pistols. From personal experience shooting a pistol at 50 yards with a barrel less than 4.5 inches causes velocity issues.
Seeing as a P365 will hit at 50yds on a 6x10 without much trouble, it can't be that severe of a velocity issue. I have a 15yd on my carry pistol and 25yd on my old competition pistol, and you can hold center at 50 and hit a 6x10 no problem. All my guns are below 4.5 actually, and I've never had a significant issue hitting targets at 50yds or 100yds.
Ah, the bullets do not rise statement at the end. That is correct that they don't rise like the chart shows. The problem with that is when you aim your site at a target, your barrel is not perfectly parallel to the ground. You're literally launching a projectile UP into the air against the pull of gravity. The literal definition of rise= to go UP; or an increase of elevation. Therefore the bullet is in fact rising (going UP) against the pull of gravity until it's overcome by its pull and then starts to fall back down to earth. The targets themselves, shows that the bullet hits high and then drops low. Only when a gun is fired perfectly flat or parallel to earth (0°) does the bullet then start to drop immediately as soon as it leaves the barrel. Still subscribed because of the great info. Check my first comment.
