    2 years back when I started watching Film Riot, mostly because of NoFilmSchool, I was just starting out. I had to direct a small commercial and I was freaking out. Today, after about 24 projects, and with slightly more confidence than back then, I have to say, I owe you guys big. Not all, but a lot of things I now know, I wouldn't ever know if not for you guys breaking it down and showing it us. I'm sure I'm not the only guy who feels that way here. But I just wanted to say thank you.

    I would like to add that the POV sequence from the end of "Creep" was also an awesome sequence. The final like 3-4 mins of the film is brilliantly shot from the dashboard of a car.

  • @TheHandsomeMatt
    @TheHandsomeMatt 7 лет назад +5

    Stepping back from opinion and theory into more concrete realms; I think that the idea of making sure everything in your film is done intentionally is key. Whether you believe that left to right motion conveys something different than right to left motion doesn't matter. What does matter is that there was a reason you included a left to right dolly shot for that scene beyond the "I have a dolly and it was cool."

    Really great video for those of us trying to learn filmmaking. Learning the what and how are relatively easy, learning the why is much harder and more important in my opinion. I want to learn the "rules" prior to breaking them.

    I really hope this is a part one since it doesn’t cover diagonal (chaotic) movements or movements conflicting->cooperating with scenes or vice versa. A movie can tell a story just by recording places with different camera movements. I know all the lingo in my own language but would love a video about it in English.

    • @mikkelnyhuus9173

      Addendum: a bit weird that the video starts covering FEMO when we’re focusing on M. Why not just make a video on FEMO+angles and the meaning behind it? Title is misleading.

    This was a good episode and that skit with the guy and the statue in the studio was HILARIOUS! Ryan if you are too pressed for time you may want to considered having a second host do the shows twice a month to give yourself time to do the creative stuff.
    I have my own youtube channel which is secondary to my real life and writing scripts and making films---then my youtube stuff. In order for you to be able to do feature films it might be time to reduce how much you host this show. I've been a fan since about 2009/2010 and I have been wondering when are you going to start directing features and all that--I'm sure you have to be getting offers because you have masterfully built up your online following.

    I was supposed to leave my house minutes ago, the transfer from my SD card said it would only need 6 minutes. But I knew damn well that was an approximately 15 minute lie. I came to watch Film Riot on an empty stomach to pass the time. Picked this video, was refreshed to see more advanced camera techniques mentioned. Especially the breaking of the 180 rule at 2:00
    "But let's jump into something more typical" he said, and it was at that point I began eating the McDonalds sweet and sour sauce sitting from yesterday's lunch. Pack after pack.
    Hey Ryan, how do I get out of a project that's taking up all my time for no pay. I bit off more than I can chew, have no cash and have learned a valuable lesson but I don't want to leave these guys without a DP/editor

    • @filmriot
      @filmriot  7 лет назад +10

      One doesn't exist without the other. Symbolic imagery and scene setting is going to set tone/emotion. They can't be separated.

    • @OBSDCC7
      @OBSDCC7 7 лет назад +3

      Film Riot I know this. But what I mean is I don't get too hung up on what the meaning of the shot is unless it's a specific shot I intended. Thanks for the advice tho

    • @filmriot
      @filmriot  7 лет назад +10

      +Comedy Cove Every shot should be intentional. Every shot will mean something whether you want it to or not. If you aren't choosing wisely you may end up sending the wrong message to your audience. Great storytelling doesn't throw darts in the dark.

    Completely off topic and I'm not sure on the technical lingo but with your studio set up obviously you're shooting on a green screen but wondering what the shot would look like if you added some red "fill" lights from behind you just to give the illusion that the red from the image is bouncing onto you slightly? Possibly also some from the front as well as would give the impression that the whole of the studio has same color scheme obviously though any white lights will possibly over power the red colors some what.
