I was a Owner-Operator of a Semi Tractor Trailer in 1973. I was in Kinston, North Carolina and wanted to fly home for the weekend. I got to the Kinston Air Port that night before I was to fly out of there. I didn't know what kind of plane I was to fly on except I hope they might have room for me. I slept in the truck till flight time and was supprised to see this Boeing 737 sitting there on the runway with the engines running. I hurried out of the truck with my gear and ran into the building which was a wood structure just big enough to hold an office and ticket counter. Yes there was room and I needed not rush as they can't leave till he the ticket officer told them to leave...I laughed at this. I locked the truck up and headed for the plane. I climbed the steps that came out of the plane to my supprise and entered the plane. It was brand new and just acquired by the Piedmont Air Lines. I was supprised at the interior. I was impressed with the seats and decor of the plane. I had flown on military C-47s and ever a Super Connie several times. This was like something I never thought they would build for duty at a small airport as Kinston. They were really coming up in the world. As I sat by the window I notice the ticket officer come out of the shack and waved his hand for them to take off. I laughed at him as if he was waving at a Ford Trimotor to fly off sense no other customers have arrived...The two General Electric J-79s roared off the runway like I never felt before having so much power. We just blasted into the sky and in short time we were letting down at Atlanta GA. I had to transfer to another plane there to fly home. Sense then I have been on several flights with up grades of the 737 and have more respect for the aircraft then ever before. I would say this plane in my heart has taken over where the C-47 ended in safety and durability. I can still close my eyes and see them two J-79 engines roaring off the runway like a couple F104 aircraft under the wing......

Too damn cool! Great video of a legend, on her special day. Imagine going back in another 50, where she'll be 100 & the MAX will have been retired for years.

What I recall about the early days of the 737: My local airport, Baer Field, was served by United Airlines, among two others; I.E., Delta, and TWA. United used jet service before the other two, and had been flying the French made, mid sized, Caravelle. When announcing the new service, with the 737, United flew one these new aircraft in, and positioned it on the tarmac, at the local fixed base operators site at the Fort Wayne Air Service facilities. It was on display for about two days, and observers were encouraged to visit, climb the air stairs, and perform a walk through. I did so, and understood, that this new B-737-100, would stand the test of time.

My father, Lee H. Person (Test Pilot,NASA) was the main project pilot on Fat Albert at NASA Langley, Hampton, VA and was inducted into the VA Aviation Hall of Fame for his flight research on this plane.

Awesome! I did not know that the MOF had the first 737. I understand they also have the first 747 and 727. I think the first 707 is in Washington DC. I can't wait to visit Seattle in December! :)

And 787. The MOF is the best aviation museum I have ever visited, and I have visited a great many. it has one of the largest collections of aircraft both indoors and outdoors with a wealth of information. I would also recommend the Everett Boeing tour and a visit to Renton.

@@EinkOLED They have the 787, but not the first 787 which is now in Japan on display.
A pity the first 777 can't join the collection, but at least it is preserved at the Pima Air Museum.
