  • I often tire of carrying a heavy full-size handgun. Instead of substituting a .22 rimfire “mouse gun,” I wish I had a lightweight big-bore gun. Smith & Wesson has the answer: the .44 Magnum AirLite 329PD six-shooter.
Weighing in well under 2 pounds, this revolver is easy to carry and will not break my back after hiking all day. How does S&W do it? Stay tuned as I examine this big-barking lightweight.

I own that gun. I use a Hogue 500 S&W recoil absorbing grip on mine. Changed the titanium cylinder out for a stainless steel model 629 fluted cylinder. Quad ported by Mag-Na-Port. My carry revolver in a shoulder holster.

Great gun. The hogue grip does tame it down a lot. Very accurate too.

I own one of these awesome revolvers. The lite strike is likely because the tension screw on your hammer spring has backed out. Pull the grip and blue loctite that thing. Same with your rear sight mounting screws! Enjoy!

Uhhhh no....I'd be much happier with a Charter Arms revolver in .44Spl. 250Grn LSWC/LSWCHP bullets over a warm loading would be my personal choice. S&W lost me as a loyal revolver customer decades ago. If I just gotta have a .44 Magnum revolver, it'll probably be a Ruger.

Upon use, you will want a pair of pachmayr grips.
      I know this right handed.

Great for backcountry defense, *IF* you can be effective with your shot placement and follow-ups as necessary…not so great if the first shot missed, and the front sight is embedded in your forehead!

Just like the other AirLite magnums, I wouldn't be excited to shoot the magnums in these guns but they're great with the compatible less powerful cartridges (.44 Special, .38 Special, .32 H&R and .32 Long). This is probably the coolest .44 Special carry gun. Although if you don't especially want a revolver, you can get a .45 ACP pistol with similar ballistics in a less expensive, smaller gun that's just as lightweight, which I believe is the main reason why .44 Special isn't as popular as it used to be. There are just so many modern .45 options. But if you might occasionally need that wrist-straining .44 Magnum power in a very lightweight gun, the AirLite owns the niche.
I always wanted to see strong materials like scandium and titanium applied to non-magnum cartridges. Redesigned smaller frames using stronger metal could be thinner and lighter than conventional designs. I fantasize about utilizing better materials and frame design to make really small .38s, .32s, and .22s. FYI, .32s used to be made in smaller I-frames (such as original h
Hand-Ejectors) and there was an even smaller Ladysmith .22 "M-frame". In the 1950s, both Colt and S&W briefly offered all -aluminum .38 Specials but the aluminum wasn't strong enough to last, particularly in the cylinders. There were a few all-aluminum .32s produced alongside but they were also pulled and I don't know if they fared better. But with seventy years of advancements in engineering and material science, and a few tweaks, the aluminum revolver could work. We even have successful polymer-framed revolvers now, like the Ruger LCR. The S&W M13 and Colt Aircrewman concept could be successfully revived now. Pure aluminum probably still isn't strong enough for the cylinder of any common self-defense cartridge no matter now low the pressure, but add a little scandium, make some modifications, and there could be some amazing little mousegun double-action revolvers smaller than a J-frame to compete with single-action mini-revolvers, derringers, and semi-auto pocket pistols.

I occasionally carry a Taurus Titanium ported 2" in 44 special so it dont get lonely. The S&W's are great but not at over 1K

Folks need to be aware of the cons of lightweight frame revolvers. Yes they are lighter to carry but they sacrifice durability and the recoil is much more severe than heavier steel frames. The lightweight frames just don't hold up to wear over time and I would image its worse for more powerful calibers like magnums. The recoil also has to be pretty bad. Not something that would be comfortable to practice with through a gun range session and a lot of ammo. Lighter magnums like .32Mag or .327Mag the recoil might not be as bad.

Don't feel bad Ronbo, I lose count with my revolver also, but I would whether lose count with my revolver than lose my money with a woman anyday of the week. Women -----(😬I MEAN) revolvers have a way doing that to a man.👍

I have always believed that revolvers only forgiving feature is the fact that semiautomatics cannot chamber rimmed cartridges . Some do but all of those designs have been proven too expensive and never sold so they went the way of the DODO 🦤. This makes so much sense because it ditches the weight but chambers large magnum rounds. 44 ain’t no joke. But back to the weight. I would carry this if I knew 100% that I was walking into a situation where I wanted to be certain that I would be shooting 1st and I had an element of surprise while delivering overpowered underhanded one sided violence against more than one opponent in a devastating game of life or death where survival is clearly on my mind with the mindset that I had to knock down the opponents first but the first few rounds fired would be accurate and deliberate. In all other cases I’d carry a semiautomatic where I didn’t have the element of surprise and I was the prey.
