Cheers John, that's the reward for owning air cooled vw's for the last 30+ years 👍 I have an early 80's T25 you may have spied in the background that we have nearly finished restoring.

@@projectsinthebarn As you probably already know. I had a T25 high top camper (LPG converted 1.9 water boxer with an auto box and I did an electric power steering conversion on it) Then a T2 bay then a T4 Trophy, so can understand the VW addiction. Id happily get another T25 or T4 but the T2 was such challenge in terms of rust and bodywork that Despite enjoying the vehicle and making a decent profit when I sold it, I doubt I shall ever own another.

@@ToTheGarage bay windows are lovely to own if you have a super solid one, but are complex in their construction if you need to restore one as all the chassis parts that commonly rot out will always affect the other surrounding areas.
We currently have a VW LT35 I converted a couple of years ago after outgrowing bays and T25's. I restored a super rare T25 karmann cheetah coach built before we bought the LT35, that was mega, but with 3 small children at the time I never felt safe as its practically a shed on wheels!

nice job. be interesting how you go about the refinishing side of things. when i have worked on these the fact there is a stone chip line is great to mask up on, I keep my primer , stone chip product and colour low and small as possible then bring the lacquer up to the stone chip line and remover the tape while the lacquer is still wet. great video , I'm really liking this! thanks again

Fantastic job Simon. In the 2 years that I’ve had my 97 XK8 I’ve replaced the rear shocks and refreshed the rear suspension components as my rear damper bushes also failed and had precisely the same rust in the sills as your car, but both sides and quite a bit deeper. That also came as a nasty shock! Still, the good thing is that I know that they really are sorted now and the inner sills are rust free and have been injected with dinitrol rust inhibitor. IMHO, it’s an essential preventative job for any UK based X100!
Keep up the good work and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Hi Gerard, great yo hear from you buddy. Thanks for sharing your XK8 's story with me, they do like to throw the odd curve ball now and again don't they! Pleased to hear you have had these areas taken care of and they should be good for a very long while now 😀
The trickiest part now will be getting it to look half descent with the paint finish in that area, so fingers crossed ot goes OK 👌
I am so pleased you are enjoying what we have done so far and there is plenty more to come so I really hope you stay tuned for that 👍

Good morning Simon... what a nasty surprise 😮 but you fixed it perfectly. Congratulations!!!! The rust removal looks good too. Continued success. Greetings Udo

Hi Udo, it was a nasty surprise, but glad it went well in the end.
I was watching one of John's 'to the garage' old xK8 show videos last night at work and saw you and your jaguar in it, I knew I had seen your beautiful car before ☺

I have literally just found exactly the same on mine on the same side. Worrying..... Looks like something needs to be done soon to fix this. :-(

Oh dear, at least you have now seen it and can deal with it before it spreads any further. I guess these cars are getting on now and these rust issues are to be expected.
Hope it goes well for you buddy, Simon.

repair panels for this area are available

      @projectsinthebarn  2 года назад +2

Hi Graham, thanks for that buddy. I did check the ones out you can buy but at around £60 each I thought I would use what I had to hand. It's turned out pretty well to be fair and by the time it's all painted back in it should be fine 👍

@@projectsinthebarn I had the same problem but mine was a lot worse and the inner lip had disintegrated!
I'm having the wheel arches and rear 1/4 panel replaced. All the front subframe and engine mounts were repaired last year.
I wish you could sell rust, I'd make a fortune!

@@grahamwalker6395 blimey, good luck with it buddy. Rust is a natural process on our old cars, at least you're cracking into it and getting it done so well done for that. Like you, I would be a millionaire if you could bottle up rust and sell it 😉

@@codylontoc8065 hi buddy, I don't think you will be able to get an after market key fob to 'talk' to the cars ecu I'm afraid. There are a few posts kicking around the jaguar forums about using the S Type flip key and programming that, never done it personally though buddy.
      Has yours stopped working?
