I've worked in the automotive repair industry (in the parts side of the business), and have done most of my own work on my family's vehicles (including engine and transmission overhauls), and I feel confident in saying that you do the right thing for your customers. Repairs done correctly and thoughtfully; no short cuts, but always done with the knowledge and confidence that you can stand behind your work. This is borne out by the number of repeat customers you have and the ones who bring their vehicles many, many miles to have your shop do their repair and maintenance work. You exhibit the most valuable trait you can have in any business: integrity. I appreciate what you do, and how you do it.

This shape of XK is a real future classic. I vividly remember being "back stage" at the UK launch, I was working at a dealership at the time and we threw a big party for customers old and prospectively new. It was so cringe looking back, but we had one end of the showroom blanked off with a huge Union Jack suspended from the ceiling, something like 8' wide by 10' tall. The CD player used to play atmospheric music was employed, with the lights dimmed and as the backstage area was filled with dry ice smoke, the stirring strings of Elgar's "Nimrod" from the enigma variations started up. with the triumphant crenando, the sleak freshly polished shape of a brand new Antigua Blue XK8 started, and taking thier foot off the brake, crept through the archway, flag flowing over the bonnet and up past the roof to rapturous applause. We had two, the Antigua blue coupe with cream leather interior and a Madeira Red convertible with tan interior. I Still smile whenever I see one of these gorgeous cars on the road.

That XK8 already had the 3rd gen metal body tensioners installed, those were never going to fail. That does indicate that the previous owner had already had this job done before. These were originally fitted with plastic bodied tensioners. The design was revised but still plastic, that is the 2nd gen tensioners. The design was later revised and changed for the 3rd gen metal body tensioners with the plastic slippers on top. However, it doesn't hurt to have done this job, the guides usually give a little warning before they fail, and changing them is not uncalled for. However, had the owner had the complete service history, he would've known that this job did not need to be done, and as a result they never would have caught that failing cam gear. This guy may just be the luckiest person on Earth. Plunking down money on a job that was already performed to find and a replace a failing part that is not a common problem is the best outcome that could have happened.

"What's your biggest shipping nightmare?" A friend and I shipped a huge load of plastic dog crates from Muncie, IN to the Washington DC area. It was a recipe for disaster. Loaded them into the back of my 1979 Ford F-250. Even strapped down to the bed and wrapped in plastic it swayed wildly in the wind. Was also towing a small 1966 Shasta camper for us to sleep in. Could feel every big truck that went by. Made it about 200 miles from home when the nylon gears on the 460 timing chain fell apart and left us stranded in Columbus, OH. Luckily made it to a grocery store parking lot before the engine wouldn't run anymore. He rented a U-haul truck , moved everything over, left the truck & trailer and we continued our journey. Delivered them to the purchaser and he was very happy. Had a blast in DC as it was almost Christmas. All 50 states and even territories had Christmas trees they decorated and sent to the Capitol. Even had a massive fire pit with enormous logs to keep visitors warm Very cool to see. Eventually had to go back and tow the truck and camper trailer back home. Which required two trips, once for the truck and another for the camper.

Many of the Ebay Suppliers out of CA go through a third party to pick up the parts and take it to the carrier. This third party had a COVID outbreak/warehouse staff didn't come to work and they were down to 1/5 their work force. So they did ship it but their in between service was screwed up. This is what I heard when I ordered a set of lifters from CA and it took 2.5 weeks to get to Oregon.

My worst shipping nightmare was a computer. It was 2009-2010, I needed to upgrade most of my stuff, so I bought a whole computer, but as parts plus building plus testing (the idea was to make sure everything works together, even if I'm losing some money on individual components compared to other shops, and hey, I even got the Linux testing package).
First time it arrived the shipping was quick, but the computer didn't work - turned out the video card suffered some damage in shipping (assuming they did in fact run the tests I paid for ;)). So I sent it back as a package and as they were out of stock on that card, they've even upgraded it and sent it back... And then!
So like the Wizard's package that traveled between cities for no reason, my (second) package did a similar thing - it went to completely different place (North instead of East, probably mistakenly put on a wrong truck), then got redirected. But that's not a problem, what's two more days, right?
And THEN! The delivery guy did something unbelievable, he "delivered" it to another building (wait until you know how that was "possible"), then reportedly someone called him up that he made a mistake, so he retrieved it... and "delivered" to me by... leaving it at neighbor's DOOR. No one even signed it!
And guess what, the case was absolutely SMASHED, it was in pieces (after traveling all over the country). And there are rules, you know, you're supposed to open the package in the presence of the delivery guy and check for damage - but he delivered it to two other people, and not me!
It gets better - I filed a complaint with the shipping company, but the guy started his vacation the next day! So I kept the hardware and the box in damaged state for over a week until they sent someone else to assess the situation. And I was scared AF that he would just say it's me making stuff up, after all it has been delivered to the neighbor's door, right?
Fortunately it wasn't that bad - we've signed some protocols and the shipping company gratuitously _allowed_ their fault. Fine, they're guilty, but what's next?
Of course there's no free return shipping even though they've admitted destroying the package. So I had to pack that stuff back up, drive it up to a location, be granted with a guy who was probably ending his shift or something, so he was suuuuper unpleasant. But in the end, he did take me through the process. I shipped the destroyed computer back. They built a THIRD one for me. And finally I got what I ordered, just a few days later.
All in all, this took over a month. I spent the money (huge money for me), lost weeks of time, phoned two companies countless times, under constant stress that I've basically lost all this money to some broken system.
I laugh about it now, but it was unbelievably frightening back then. Holy frick!

I spent two months tracking down a OEM set; since Packard only made v8 engines for two years, there was no aftermarket parts at that time. So, I can relate to parts issues. Today, they have been re-produced and can be ordered by a number of Packard parts specialists.

I was working for a startup that was doing on-site computers, printers, etc servicing. We had a customer try us out with a particularly gnarly and expensive enterprise-level laser printer. Thankfully, I had a fair bit of experience with this printer, and was able to diagnose the problem, and traced it to a failed part. The part cost almost as much as the printer new...but it was a case of budgets...they could spend money from their maintenance budget, but had no money in their new equipment budget.
So we ordered the part for the repair...and it was sent out via a well-known shipping service that rhymes with OOPS. We waited...and waited...we check with the shipping company, and they said they had delivered it! That was impossible since we had been sitting, waiting for the part. There was always someone there since we knew the shipment was due. So we went back and forth with rhymes with OOPS. They claimed we had received it, and signed for it. They sent a scan of the signature...and it wasn't from any of us in the company. They stonewalled us. Eventually, we had to order a replacement part...which means we paid twice for the part like you did Wizard. And we had it shipped via a different carrier, and it arrived in a couple of days, no problem.
Where there was a problem was with the customer...since they had been without the printer for almost a couple of weeks now, and it was vital to their business...they cancelled our support contract with them, and convinced the CEO and bought a new, upgraded printer. So we were left with an expensive part that we had paid twice for and no immediate income. The supplier initially wasn't willing to take the part back and give us our second payment back...we eventually prevailed upon them. All through this time our company was fighting with the company that rhymes with OOPS. Never got satisfaction from them. Had to eat many thousands of dollars on the missing part.
Not a fun experience...and it eventually led to the collapse of the company. And that is why I never ship with the company that rhymes with OOPS unless I have no other choice whatsoever.

those upper tensioners look like they were replaced at some point. the originals had a plastic body that would split, and those look like the early replacements. But best to swap it all as who knows how worn out it all is. Also where did you find that cam gear? I need to swap mine out...

You are correct, sir. These were the correct retrofit parts with metal tensioners. First retrofits had plastic with a spring to hold a bit longer, and second retrofits are the ones on the work stand, including the lower metal tensioners. When I did mine, (Lots of busywork, but relatively brainless with a set of crank and cam hold tools and a harmonic holder and high torque torque wrench), I took about three weeks of leisure spare time doing mostly bolt fitting: I don’t feel turning a wrench was worth $80 - $150 an hour. I agree that this job was unnecessary, except for the VVT unit replacement and the metal water pump tower and hoses, also a trivial job when this part of the engine is apart. The radiator fans come out easily, as does the hood removal and replacement to give relatively good access.

Back in 1991 I learned something about that "white Plastic" or nylon they use on cars. On my 1971 Ford Galaxy 500 the driver's side door wouldn't close,. The white nylon bushing had broken... I mean it was fine then it just got chewed up... So I replaced it with a bushing out of a 1976 Ford. A few weeks later the bushing on the passenger door went the same way... strange, that door was hardly used... then suddenly all of the wires fell out from under the dash board just drooped down as the white plastic ties broke on their own... then the white plastic clips that held up the windshield washer hoses just broke.... Literally every piece of white plastic just broke within a few months on the entire car. I pretty much realized that the timing gears were also made of white plastic and I replaced them and they were starting to show wear too... And by the way in 1996 the white plastic bushing from the 1976 donor ford went bad just like clockwork, on schedule. Luckily, I took the passenger side bushing out of a much newer car, as I finally did with the driver's side door, so I didn't have to replace them again.
You were very likely right to replace the timing chain, especially the guides. Some of that white plastic doesn't actually wear out... it literally ages out. It's a super strong material that just turns bad overnight and goes soft. In my case, the failure point was almost exactly 20 years. And I'm pretty sure Ford really didn't care at that point, it was way out of warranty.
So beware the white plastic... it doesn't look like it's going bad until it suddenly shatters or mushes.

I've had those kind of shipping nightmares before this year. The exact same thing in fact. Only from Michigan to Oklahoma City and then back to Michigan. It was returned to Michigan claiming "no such address" but they sent me a picture and I confirmed it was my address and that I do exist. They shipped it back to me and the 2nd time it arrived. It was a month for a shipment from Michigan to Oklahoma though. Talk about ridiculous.

I'm a long-standing Jaguar nutcase so am always interested in your shows on Jaguars. The car you have there was somewhat of a troublesome beast, I'm afraid to say, and doesn't have a particularly good reputation here in England, not least due to its tendency to rust badly. The later model made of aluminium is a far better car built from about 2005. Make sure you check the upper front wishbone trunnions. If they seize, the suspension still works, but the securing bolt then just rotates in the subframe and wears an oval hole at which point it is scrap.

I have had the same issue with tracking shipments that I've been expecting. Last week, I was getting a parcel from Maryland to Topeka. It came to KC, went BACK to Columbia, MO, then to KC and finally back to me. It added 3 or 4 days. I have had the same thing happen a couple of other times Pre-COVID. I don't know what's going on. It's only been FedEx that I've had it happen with. USPS and UPS haven't done this to me - yet.

Then it went ot Melbourne in Victoria Then back to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne then finally Brisbane and my address. Three weeks and 9,734km or 6,048miles. Its travelled more than I have.

Really nice conversion on the Mercedes.
Having timing chain issues under 100,000 just seems ridiculous.
Some of the early 3.8 v6s from Kia had a similar issue. However it's the hydraulic tensioners that fail. There's a ratcheting mechanism that prevents them from retracting too much after the engine shuts off. That fails and so at cold start up you get a bit of chain flop that makes a hell of a racket until the oil pressure comes up.
It doesn't matter how badly the timing chain guides wear it never has enough slop to cause it to jump a tooth.
However what will happen is that the plastic gliding material on the tensioners eventually gets worn away from the chain flopping around and then the chain starts tearing into the metal backing. Then you end up with powdered metal floating through the oiling system and that will wreck the engine.
Got upgraded OE parts from Korea for about $300. Labor looks about the same as what you had to do on that Jag. Took us about a day having never done one before and just following info off the internet.
I can't imagine all that stuff costing $3k+

During this pandemic I've had more weird things happen with shipping than in the entirety of my 58-year life. No joke. As you said I've had a couple shipments "take weird journeys" in seemingly no hurry to get to me, a couple of things simply "disappear" and one arrive 2 months AFTER RECEIVING A REFUND!! And they've *all been the USPS.* Not UPS, not FEDEX. No. But the USPS has lost its mind!

I'm in Louisiana and it went to Michigan, Washington DC, New Jersey and places I can't remember before I got it. Normally packages from Hawaii go to California then directly to New Orleans then to my local post office. Three stops not dozens.

1:07 I've worked in shipping and receiving, and I have been a delivery driver for a good majority of my life. I'm 99% positive what happened is that someone in the warehouse in Kansas, misread the shipping label, and put it on the outbound truck going back to the original shippers address in California. When it arrived in California, the sort team put it back on the outbound truck going back to California. Either way, sorry you had to experience that man. Been through it myself, and it's super frustrating. Especially when you're waiting on car parts.

Good think you were in MEXICO when you filmed yourself going 65 in a 50. But shipping nightmares. Well at work we had a machine with a big 150 hp blower that pulled suction to operate the machine. Well it sucked cardbourd dust through the impeller all day and after 6 months it built up on the impeller blade in a out of balance fashion and Boom. Machine down! We needed to air freight a new one from Germany. But this was in 2010 when the volcano in Iceland had spewed ash all over Europe and grounded all air traffic. The factory was covered up in work for that machine and was looking at huge penalties and lost contracts if the machine wasn't working. One of the other maintenance guys thought of a way that might work to run the machine. The machine had another 75 hp motor fan that only blew dust off the board loaded into the feeder station. The suction blower had a 10" diameter hose and the 75hp had a 6" hose. The hoses were routed side by side. We reversed the polarity of the smaller blower to make it suck. Then went to lowes and got a round sheet metal hvac duct neck down from 10" to 8" and another from 8" to 6". We hooked the 6" line to the 10" and it worked like new. It ran for the 10 days or so that the air flights were shut down and till the backlog in shipping cleared out. The manufacturer sent engineers to our plant to see how we bypassed the problem because other customers had the same happen to their suction impeller. They made our adoption the official workaround until they fixed the dust imbalance problem about 8 months later. I'm the one who thought of using the hvac duct neckdowns.

The reason why people would say no to a new cam gear is that they are paying for a timing chain replacement and the bad cam gear is found. Then they are quoted for the entire rate of the cam gear change on top of the timing chain repair. So they are being charged twice for the same work.
Don't brush this off as "the customer just doesn't understand that the gear needs to be changed and it's unfortunate for him". You know this happens.

Companies need to understand that their shipper determines their customer satisfaction. I am done ordering from FCP Euro at this point because I have wrote them to tell them FedEx is a problem and they tell me one day they will let you select FedEx vs UPS, but after 3 out of 3 problematic shipments I can't keep waiting.
