    I own a 2004 XK8 4.2 Coupe in dark blue. I've had it for around 5 years, currently on 92k miles and I love it. It's been reliable on the whole. I've probably spent £6k in maintenance and that includes all new wishbone bushes, brake discs, tyres etc, chassis v-mounts, replacing some aging hoses, gearbox oil change. But it's certainly never let me down and to be honest I just like to keep it in good condition. You could spend a lot less if you didn't actually care about keeping it nice or how it drove, which is unfortunately how a lot of these have been run. So if you buy one second hand, just assume that all of that needs doing over the next few years unless you see proof of previous history. But to actual drive, magnificent. The more more you trust it, the more you realise that the harder and faster you drive it, the better it gets. It has a beautiful sound, and what's nice is that it's not sooo crazy fast that you don't get to enjoy the sound (like a lot of modern cars). I rev it all the way out to the redline frequently and it's just so good. And that's another nice thing, it just feels like it's mean to be driven and enjoyed, like a proper car. And combined with the looks and the interior, I can't imagine myself loving another car like I love my XK8. Of course there's lots of different cars I want for lots of different reasons. But the XK8 may be the ultimate daily driver / road trip car for a great mixture of speed/comfort/looks/handling/feel/x factor.

      I'd say cars have become ugly recently: they all seek to look 'aggressive' to feed the egos of potential buyers, which is just sad. A classic XK8/XKR just looks sleek and classy, which is a rarity.

    I fell in love with the xk8 when I first saw one back in 97/98. I vowed one day that I would have one. Consequently, my dream became a reality just as COVID began, a BRG 98 Xk8. İt isn't perfect, but the drive is magnificent. I was so enticed that two years later I purchased the ultimate X100, a metallic black 2003 limited edition 4.2 XKR roadster. I've kept both as I want to get the xk8 up to prime condition before I sell it, and buy a convertible for the spring and summer.
    There's no other cars I want to buy, other than my previous favourite cars in my lifetime. An EType and Jenson Interceptor. They say you should never meet your idols as you might be disappointed. Well I've met mine and they are still, and will always be my automotive Idols .

    This type of XK8 seems to be improving with age and is one of those few cars that just somehow looks perfect from every angle. Compared with today's modern F-type it somehow keeps a sense of elegance that the F-type doesn't have... It can be very loud, aggressive and very fast but all a bit yobbish compared to this elegant yet unpretentious mobile smoking jacket of a car 🥰

    I had a 2000 black/black XKR convertible. My god it was a beautiful car. The R is the supercharged XK8. Not super fast 0-60, but 60-90 was a single leap with a tiny press of the big toe. Literally purred at 110 mph. Kind of expensive to maintain. Worth it. Regret selling it but I only had garage space for one car and I needed a daily driver, and the XKR just wasn’t as reliable as I required at the time. Would be perfect right now with the lockdown and I am not having to drive downtown to the office everyday.

My car in stock form has 400 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque. I probably deviate from that about 5 to 10 HP due to a modified exhaust (did it for sound) and an aluminum intake (did that because it was better than buying the stock plastic intake pipe). I plan on next either upgrading the supercharger pulleys or upgrading the blower to a twin screw unit. My goal is to achieve nearly 600 crank HP.

In a way that just shows that this car was a retro throwback even when it was new, but that's why I love my XK8. It feels like a modern version of a classic Jag, with just enough new tech to make you feel safe and comfortable. Whilst the newer cars are very impressive, they are just trying to be like a bland German car, full of black plastic and lacking in any real character.

      dazb2010 I had two XF’s. I agree. The interior design was stunning on launch but when you look in detail at the assembly quality, it’s actually very poor for the price when new. The latest models are even worse, to the point of being insultingly bad. At least the old XF had something about it.

      @dazb2010 In all honesty my 2004 XK8 is quite rattly too and has a few questionable bits in the interior. But the 4.2 V8, the sense of theatre and that certain x-factor makes up for it. Otherwise I wouldn't really be interested in Jag as a brand.

    They actually are pretty affordable to own, one of these, or and XJ8 for that matter, can comfortably turn in 25 mpg on the motorway with the cruise control set at a sensible speed, and they'll cruise all day like that without any stress on the car or the driver. It would be useful to have a Jaguar specialist who knows these cars well to hand if you own one as they're far from being the easiest cars in the world to work on and a bit of knowledge definitely trumps a lower labour rate as it's very easy to tackle a job on one of these, take a lot of stuff apart and then find you've just got to turn around and put it all back together again as you can't actually access what you wanted to work on like that, something that a knowledgeable specialist would know. Some parts for these, particularly suspension parts, are expensive and they seem to have a taste for air conditioning condensers as they are mounted low down at the front and take a beating, but otherwise good ones seem to be generally pretty reliable. Rust can be an issue on less than good ones, but for the price difference between a tired example and a genuinely nice one, there really isn't any point in buying anything other than a nice one, then sit back, enjoy it and look after it and watch the prices start going up again. XKR prices already are, so these are bound to follow...

    There must be a financial dividing line somewhere between buying a much newer, much more economical car for a lot more money, and buying an old but well-kept luxury car for a bargain price, and taking the hit on insurance, fuel and MOT costs.
    I've no idea where that line is, but my gut feeling is that this XKR might well fall near it. Depending on what mileage you expected to put on it and how long you intended to keep it, I guess. I'd be very tempted indeed!

    • @furiousdriving

    The story about there only being 7 designs of Ford security keys is correct, but misunderstood. There were only 7 designs of key BLANK, but the options for cutting them are much greater than for conventional saw-tooth keys, so there are many millions of possible key design. It may be possible that another key could be made to fit a very worn early example of one of those lock cylinders but I'm not actually aware of any vehicles being stolen like that. The later lock cylinders, like the ones found on this car and most surviving Fords with these locks were much better made and didn't suffer the wear issues due to the lock cylinder components being changed to steel from brass, something that also was done with the earlier Chubb-designed security locks...
    The most important question when looking at a V8 Jag of this age is whether or not the original engine with the Nikasil cylinder walls has been replaced by a later version with the steel cylinder walls. The Nikasil liners were very prone to excess wear, especially on cars that didn't see much use and were usually only used over short distances as the excess fuel injected when the vehicle is running on fast idle when cold, effectively "on choke" just wrecked the material of the cylinder walls and could, surprisingly quickly, have the vehicle blowing blue oil smoke out of the exhaust as the wear would prevent the oil control rings from sealing properly. A lot of engines were replaced by Jaguar under warranty, and the change should be recorded in the service book for the vehicle, and a careful owner is likely to have kept the warranty paperwork for the new engine with the vehicle as that would be needed for any subsequent warranty claims on the engine. There are still early V8 Jags, and Daimlers, out there still with there original Nikasil engine, and the cost of replacing it for a steel liner unit is enormous just in terms of labour man hours and wrote off a lot of these that missed the warranty work. Add in the cost of the replacement engine and you could easily spend as much, or more than the car is worth as even used engines are not cheap at all. A friendly Jaguar dealer may be able to find out if a car someone is interested in has had the engine changed, but they may well need a lot of details to get that information accurately. Needless to say, the warranty no longer applies to these cars, partly due to time and partly due to Jaguar having changed hands, but I have heard rumours of Jaguar doing the work on much older cars that have been scrupulously dealer maintained and that are owned by long time Jaguar customers, which is nice to hear...

    • @C64SX
      @C64SX 4 года назад

      No need to stay away from Nikasil engines. If the engine is running fine today, a long time after the problematic sulphur-rich fuel types are gone from the market, you don't have to worry about the Nikasil lining. If you're unsure, take the car to a Jag specialist. They know what tests to run.

    I have a 2010 XK 5.0, and in many ways it's far superior to this car. But there's something about the class and beauty of this generation XK8 that the newer car cannot match. The wood in my XK could be optioned out (and often was), whereas in this car it almost looks structural. Sadly, Jaguar have continued to move away from this classic design language, in a quest to appear modern, something which Jaguars have always been anyway.
