Norris McWhirter and his brother Ross were the longtime editors of the Guinness Book Of Records. Although Guinness is a brewery, they're better known for world records than their beer.
I don't know what he meant but he doesn't call any one else "boy", and the use of the word was typical of white people toward black men. I was alive at the time of this broadcast and that is how it was. These days no one that I know would use the term "boy" with any adult male as a part of normal speech.
I too was surprise; but as was mentioned earlier in these comments it wasn't something that was done with any other adult males So although it might have been said without malice it should have been removed in editing (obviously recorded for future use).
Ossie Davie - the man behind Purlie Victorious :) Too bad GT couldn't find more work for him or his lovely wife on TTTT or WML. They both would have been great. I assume that many southern cbs affiliates chose not to run this one.
I like Ossie Davis's appearance. His voice, his pronunciation of "3" So few black celebrities on TV game shows in 1963, or commercials or news...practically zero. But with the Civil Rights Movement, things were starting to change, if slowly.
I also noted his pronunciation of "3!" And there was a moment in game 3 in which Kitty reached lover and put her hand on his arm as a show of affection. In 1964 that could still raise eyebrows in some corners.
Jon Vater true but remember this was Manhattan (NYC) so it was a liberally progressive area -- rest assured nationally it was an issue the Broadcast knew they would need to face.
That "smelliest substance' discussed by the Guinness man, methyl mercaptan, is used for many things such as in making plastics. The smell may be familiar to many of us: it is added to natural gas (which is otherwise odorless) so its smell will alert us to a gas leak.
McWhirter was a household name this side of the pond, a regular on a show called record breakers where people would try to get in to the Guinness Book of Records on air. Interesting fact that his twin brother Ross McWhirter was assassinated by the IRA.
All he while watching this show never once has Bud Collier made reference of this sort to a white man. And I'm a white person who grew up in this time. It was a southern term towards men of color and it was meant to be derogatory.
Did anyone else notice that Bud Collier at the end of his conversation with Ossie Davis referred to him as "boy"? I believe Mr. Davis noticed that, there seemed to be a change in his response back. I know it was the sign of the times but this ignorance of change had to change, I wonder if the panel or Bud Collier realized this after the show.
Peggy Cass seems to say "thank you" after just about every reply from a panelist. It slows her down in asking questions, plus it's just not necessary to say all the time. I find it strange that she does this because she didn't do that in the syndicated version that Garry Moore hosted, which is the one that I grew up watching.
I’ve seen her do it in any version. Sometimes she is annoying as Polly when can’t make up her mind to choose the correct person. I don’t think Polly and Peggy are on the same panel.

@@Jasper7182009 I totally agree with you. Definately not said on purpose. And there was not much of a consciousness about such things then. I only hope he knew his faux pas and maybe said "Gee, Ozzie, I sure as heck didn't mean that like it sounded."

Kudos to the contestants in all 3 games to split up the votes the way that they did. It was great having Ossie Davis on the panel.

I so love the good naturedness (is that a word?) of this show.
In game #3 contestant 2 received the 'handsome' vote from Kitty. I bet his friends and family didn't let him live that down for some time. 😂
