Songbirds in the morning, had my head lost in the tall trees I knew well, well I would say Dreaming my dry weeds Stray light finds its way to all of us Say something green, it comes back Sign light on my lips, let 'em kiss, dark leaves Let the hands of the wrong prophets heal me all they should Let the wine of the poison Jesus says tastes good And all those trees lay down if you were a bird and fell into my arms If I wrote your song in stone If I wore your wings back home Where the dreams in the backwater drown us far from home Give this to the gray, it comes back gold Birds of the morning, they may know Know more than us, giving their hymns for life Let the waves on the wrong water say what they will say While the wind and the broken branches blow me away All tall tree lay down if you were the bird who fell into my arms I could write your song in stone I could wear your wings back home Where the dreams in the backwater drown us far from home
I just discovered this version and have been listening over and over again. The imagery, his voice, the rhythm of the music box guitar playing has me spinning and dreaming in the most beautiful way. I have so many favorite I and W songs but damn this may take the cake. Thank you for doing these precious radio recordings and making them available to all of us ❤
So, here's a skeleton tab of the song. For the most part, each of these chord shapes is held for 1 bar (6 beats). The main exception is the 050050 / 040030 / 020010 bit in the 2nd lines of the verse and bridge, which is 1 bar altogether -- 050050 for beats 1-4, 040030 for beat 5, and 020010 for beat 6. I can't work out exactly what he's doing at the tail end of the chorus (when he sings "drown us far from home") so if anyone figures it out, let us know. Song in Stone - Iron and Wine Tuning: DDADF#A 6/8 time Intro: 004030 / 002010 (2x) Verse: 000000 / walk up bass line on A string to 055030 (2x) 050050 / 040030 / 020010 / 000000 070070/ 050050 Bridge: 055030 / 044030 / 022010 (2x) 070070 / 050050 / 040030 / 020010 / 000000 Chorus: 004030 / 002010 (3x) 000000
Thank you so much to those of you for figuring out this tuning and the chords he plays. It was driving me nuts. Once you guys got me close, I think he might actually be using EEBF#A♭B Basically, same intervals. Just in between the two tunings suggested. Sounds the best to me...but my ears are shit, haha.
This man is otherworldly.
Amen~!
It is hard to believe how good Sam is... singer... songwriter... guitarist... performer...
Songbirds in the morning, had my head lost in the tall trees
I knew well, well I would say
Dreaming my dry weeds
Stray light finds its way to all of us
Say something green, it comes back
Sign light on my lips, let 'em kiss, dark leaves
Let the hands of the wrong prophets heal me all they should
Let the wine of the poison Jesus says tastes good
And all those trees lay down if you were a bird and fell into my arms
If I wrote your song in stone
If I wore your wings back home
Where the dreams in the backwater drown us far from home
Give this to the gray, it comes back gold
Birds of the morning, they may know
Know more than us, giving their hymns for life
Let the waves on the wrong water say what they will say
While the wind and the broken branches blow me away
All tall tree lay down if you were the bird who fell into my arms
I could write your song in stone
I could wear your wings back home
Where the dreams in the backwater drown us far from home
Back to his roots. Silky.
God, this is perfect. Is the most talent singer ever. All my love and respect.

Wow The dear hen
What tuning is he using
I think it's DDADF#A. So the opening two chords are 004030 and 002010. Still trying to work out the rest. Beautiful song.
Please let us know when you do.

There's a few Joni Mitchell numbers using the same tuning

Tuning is DADF#AD with a capo on 3. I am trying to figure out the chords as we speak..
How's it coming?
I don't see a capo?!
dafuq there's literally no capo there. The bottom two strings seem to both be F
FFCFAC
