80,s. What else can you say. But for a long while you would find your self just singing ANYTHING and adding “whip it-whip it good” on the end of it. It just stuck in your brain!
I love Mexican Radio....I grew up in San Diego in the 60s and we listened to a lot of over the border music and pirate stations that had strong signals you could not use in the US. That's how Wolfman Jack got started,
@@ithilnin123 And Thomas Dolby continued to work in actual science and music. He has worked in production and as a session musician. I think u kinda had to be there , the 80’s, to get this, as is the case with tons of 80’s bands. They were huge with this song because it was early 80’s when synth-type music/sound was just coming into play, but really a one hit wonder when other bands hit harder. But its a classic man... its ok not to get it, its all in good fun. But it IS a classic jam 🙂💁🏻♀️
Music videos were new, there was no template. We got to watch the evolution of the genre. There was some pretty wacky stuff going on. One of the weirdest ones was Safety Dance, but the Literal version is so much better 😂😂😂 check it out for a good laugh. Literal version of Someone I Used to Know is funny too, if you like that type of humor.
BadPop agree. MRM did safety dance! And the other u mention was actually within the decade, so I guess sometimes quirky doesn’t evolve as quickly lol.. but I like quirky 😉
5 art school students from Ohio created one of the greatest New Wave bands. Probably the only other American New Wave band as influential as Devo were the Talking Heads. This song may merely seem weird today but it was a huge hit in the early 80s. It cracked the mainstream pop charts, partly because of the outrageous video. Devo were pioneers at music videos, making some of the most popular MTV videos in its early years. Also check out Freedom of Choice, The Girl You Want, We’re Through Being Cool and their version of Cant Get No Satisfaction. Back then audiences craved music that was new and different much more than we do today. Maybe we’ve reached the creative limits of pop music.
This is Devo's "one hit," but if you look deeper, there is a lot more to get into. I will say that I'm not totally into much after their first four albums, but do think their first album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo, is a masterpiece. Other songs by them to check out are: - Jocko Homo - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (cover of the Rolling Stones) - Uncontrollable Urge - Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA - Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy - Girl U Want - Through Being Cool - Freedom of Choice - Gates of Steel - Beautiful World
Loved the creativity of the Mothersbaugh brothers. Later in their careers they did a lot of film scores, and they did the theme songs and / or music for a lot of kid's shows, like Rugrats, Rugrats All Growed Up, Rocket Power, Pee Wee's Playhouse etc.
I saw Devo play a private club in Lawrence, Kansas back in 1978, just before they hit it big. Before their show, instead of another band on the bill with them, they showed the 1930s B&W movie "Freaks" (which used real circus freaks as actors). It was a fun show. This is one band that doesn't take itself seriously.
This cracks me up. I look at this song For people that may be stuck. Stuck with guilt or stuck with depression or stuck with grief over losing a loved one or a marriage or even a pet. We really need to work on letting things go in this case according to this song it would be to whip it. I am 58 and I remember this song in high school and I loved it it was a great song to dance to and as far as a dance For just this particular song I don’t think there was one. Keep up the good work I love listening to you and you’re not too hard on the eyes either. LOL
DEVO is a New Wave band from Akron, Ohio. Their first album, "Freedom Of Choice", came out in 1979, on Warner Brothers Records. This song, "Whip It", was from this album, and was released as a single in 1980. When I heard the song on the radio that year, I thought that it was a good dance song, and had some interesting bass chords and synthesizer arrangements. It would be a few years before I saw the music video on the USA Network's "Night Flight" program that aired on Friday nights and Saturday nights. I guess that the S & M themes in the music video scared the "Standards And Practices" department at MTV back in 1981, and chose not to air it for several years. The band would continue to record albums until about 1990. The band never officially broke up, but they did find other jobs outside of music that made the band members more money than recording and touring as DEVO. Two of the band members have passed away in recent years. Mark Mothersbaugh (the lead singer) and Gerald "Jerry" Casale are the remaining surviving members of DEVO.
DEVO were at the forefront of very creative electronic and theatrical music as were Talking Heads. I’m not surprised you don’t get it...DEVO were really “out there”! 😎
Absolutely love DEVO!!! Lead Singer, Mark Mothersbaugh writes television themes, notably the Them from Nickelodeon's Rugrats. The other singer, Gerald Casale sadly passed too young. The name Devo comes from De-evolution. Seems they thought things were headed backwards. Imagine that.

Google Devo energy domes. They prevent orgone energy loss through the head and radiate said energy back down through the body. You can get them from club Devo.
The song is about overcoming life problems. "Whip it" in essence means to take on your problems head on and overcome them in life. Devo is famous for their attire and stage presence. The whip in this and the woman being undressed by his whip may represent some sort of sado masochism disorder he is trying to overcome.
Mark Mothersbaugh, the lead singer, went on to have a prolific career writing theme songs, for such shows as Rugrats and Pee Wee's Playhouse. He also wrote the music for Thor:Ragnarok.
That was a punk rock song, it was good for roller skating relay races. The crowd would go nuts at the Roll-A-Wheel when this song played, if you couldn't skate fast, you either got out of the way, or got knocked down!! 😂😂😂
This song came out in my senior year of high school. Of course we equated it with a certain self-pleasuring activity that only the males of our species come anatomically equipped to perform. It was one of the first big hits of the New Wave era of popular music. We thought it was rather odd. Trust me. New Wave improved. You should check out Oingo Boingo. Genius music! Stay, Dead Man's Party, Just Another Day, all great stuff!
They were basically unknown til they debuted on SNL and freaked everyone out! People in the audience were so flabbergasted they didn’t know if they should clap or laugh or what. They were in stunned silence. I have seen so many acts debut at 666 in Atlanta like Sex Pistols, Sting, REM, but there was nothing in the world like DEVO. Even today I don’t understand all the symbolism.
"Whip it good!" Great cardio song. Never saw the video before....? I always took it to mean, if you hit a rough patch, dig in and succeed. "Give the Past a slip" The only thing that I notice is that the old saying we used to chant as children walking to school on concrete sidewalks was "Step on a line, break your daddy's spine, step on a crack, break your momma's back" It makes you look pretty funny when attempting to walk on brick pavers, I can tell you! :D I guess that was our "the floor is lava!" moment. Devo was definitely an acquired taste. I like them............what could THAT mean?

This took me back to coming home from Juniors High School and watching videos. I think I was about around twelve years old when this song came out. I liked Whip It because I thought it was catchy and different but I wondered why they were taking the woman's clothes off with that whip, I thought that was nasty.
I laughed all through this at your face and reaction! I was a teen in the 80s and we loved Devo! Yeah, they are kind of weird LOL! (And why is that girl cross eyed in the video????)
Unfortunately DEVO is mostly known to the masses for this one song but they are so much more. The lyrics of this song were inspired by the lead singers father who is featured in some of their films. Whip it was his way of saying if you're having issues just whip it! This video confused so many people thinking that they're actually singing about whipping in the physical sense. Those hats are Energy Domes. DEVO rules!
80's were called the age of new conservatism. It was nothing if compared to the modern day double standards, hate speech, polarisation and everyone being offended on something which is none of their business in the first place. This music is as relevant as it was back then, sadly.
