    • @futnucks

Fort Hood for sure. It really is "The Great Place". Sure, some stuff happens there, but it's really not bad at all. There are pretty much endless places in relatively close proximity to do anything you want. The post itself has a lot to do as well compared to some others.
Near by places that offer so much:
Belton, Temple, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and a ton of good hunting and fishing all over the state. Oh, and Marble Falls is just a beautiful place. There's not a lot to do there, it's a small town, but just really nice.

Did 3 tours at JBLM. It was easily the best base in the Army in the 80's/90's. My first duty station was Ft. Carson. Didn't mind it, but I spent 8 to 9 months a year in the field, 6/32 Armor. It was my first duty station and the only reason I reenlisted was to get out of there. I actually retired rather than go to Ft. Campbell and back into airborne status.

I was there 1992-1993, one of the worst places I have been in the Army. I was in Yuma at YPG and it sucked, but close to San Diego and Phoenix. I have been to most Army Bases Conus, Italy, Germany, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. I have not been to Alaska, But Fort Polk was the worst, and I was there pre internet and cell phones. We had one channel on the TV. I guess the experience made me appreciate other spots.

My brother was there the year before. He was on his way to Vietnam and this was AIT. While there he said people returning from Vietnam guys claimed this place was actually worse than being in country except for someone shooting at them. I personally went to Fort Leonard Wood basic base 1970 for me and Fort Carson which for me was a good base to at.

Ft. Polk (Johnson) is by far the worst US Army Instillation in the US, but I’ve never been to Ft. Irwin. There is absolutely nothing worth seeing within a 3 hour (or more) drive of that place. I only had a couple TDYs there and absolutely hated it . I could not imagine being stationed there.

Great video! I think when I enlisted in 1983 I put Hawaii as my first pick, ended up going to Weisbaden, Germany. Got to see Europe through ITT tours! PCS'd back to Ft Hood as Airborne Pathfinder in 6th Cav, great duty assignment, excellent unit, had alot of fun!
Had I stayed in I wanted to go to Ft Benning as a black hat at the airborne school, ETS'd in 1987 and came back to Pa. where I still live. Didn't regret going in the Army one bit!!

You’re right about not basing your choice on the current post commander. I worked for an incompetent new general in a staff position. Fortunately I had orders for graduate school, saved. Signing into my new assignment after school my wife showed me the post paper with the announcement of the new post commander. Within the year her command was such a disaster she was reassigned and the assignment was really enjoyable.

The best duty station that I have been to is Fort Huachuca Arizona, but you have to be in an MOS that's needed there. There's no combat arms there as far as I know. I was stationed at Fort Bliss before all of the build up, it was pretty good, but if you wanted to leave the area you had a drive ahead of you. San Antonio was 8 hours away, Dallas was 10 hours away, Tucson was almost 5 hours away, and San Diego was 10.5 hours away. The closest place was Las Cruces (48 min) and there was nothing going on there.

I was at Schofield Barracks Hawaii and couldn't believe it wasn't on the list. I'm from Oklahoma, when I was offered Hawaii, everywhere else wasn't an option. I was there 2 years and 8 months. I only did 3 years. So after BT and AIT of 8 weeks, the rest of my 3 years was Schofield. I spent 7 months on Maui, 45 days in the Philippines, 45 in South Korea, about 2 months in Micronesia and around 4 months total at PTO. Pahokaloa Training Area on the big Island. I saw so much in that 32 months, its unbelievable.

US Army 1971 -2025. I've served on a lot of bases and my favorites were Camp Zama (Sagamihara Japan), Caserma Ederle (Vicenza Italy), and White Sands Missile Range (New Mexico). I absolutely hated Fort Hood, but that was mostly due to leadership issues. My father had a career in the Army as well, but he was in Air Defense Artillery (Nike-Hercules Missile) and as such I grew up on small missile sites throughout the US North East (Buffalo, Niagara, Limestone Maine, etc.) - no more than a dozen military families in the area.

I did three tours in the Army, but only one stateside station: Ft. Carson CO at the end of the 80s.
    Most. Eff'd. Up. Post. Ever.
When I got out the Army was in flux. The Warsaw Pact was on the verge of breaking up and Saddam Hussein had not yet gone stupid crazy. Major forts hosted an entire division all in one spot and Cartoon hosted the 4th ID [M]. At the time the division was a huge cluster frig. It didn't even have a legit mission. When I finally checked out, the mission of the 4th ID was 'to provide engaged units with trained and experienced replacement personnel' and 'to prepare for deployment should such a deployment become necessary'. Translated that meant the entirety of the division, less cadre, was one big replacement depot. We weren't even turning wrenches on the vehicles or equipment we were theoretically gonna go to war with. It was post full of ROAD NCOs and time-serving officers and everybody was dying to escape it.
We joked about it, but there was some biting truth to it... Fort Cartoon's mission in life was to support the strip joints, dance clubs, and pizza delivery companies in the greater Colorado Springs area.

I do not know why people ask for Ft Bliss but as a native of El Paso I can tell youwhat should and does cause many retirees live there. 1) El Paso is one the largest city in the US to have a military installation (pop just short of a million. ) 2) Fort Bliss goes back to the frontier forts in the Indians Wars so the population has a great respect for army and strong tradition. 3) The military hospital as well as the retail you mentioned. 4) Sunshine, it has some the greatest number of sunny days in the United States. 5) Educational opportunities. The public schools are better than most military towns and there is UTEP. 6) It is in Texas which has no income tax and allows you to claim residence for the rest of your career once you live in the state. 7) Nice desert weather which means a wide spread between low and high temperatures so there is almost always a nice time to be outside. Incidentally, the desert does get snow usually actual accumulation of 3 to 5 inches for 1 to 2 days a year and the lows at night or often under freezing in the winter and usually you get a temperature down near to or at zero every winter. Of course, the afternoon high is likely to be in the fifties. In the summer afternoon highs of 90 or above usually means nighttime lows in 60s or 50s. Sure beats where I know live in Houston

We couldn't go to bars or clubs to meet chicks and Colorado Springs was a small town feel even though it was a city. Denver wasn't so fun even though it was away from Carson, state side was lame. I finally got my 4187 approved and went to Panama and I had fun their and being a Paratrooper and it was a single mans paradise.

Don't know about the Army...but i did 26 years in the Marine Corps. And a MAJOR consideration when ranking assignments was always the cost of living in that area. Military pay is much better than it once was, but still lags behind civilian wages. Some installations in high-cost regions can put a very real stress on your lifestyle and budget. Having a bunch of great local amenities you can't afford is not an appealing scenario.

Interesting that you show Ft. Polk (now Ft. Johnson) in the thumbnail. In the opening monologue in the film, "Patton" (1970), Patton, played by George C. Scott, makes reference to "...shoveling sh*t in Louisiana," he was referring to Camp Polk, as it was in WWII. Ol' Blood 'n' Guts got it right. BTW - Louisiana natives still refer to it as Ft. Polk, and screw the PC name change.

Hard to fathom what modern day soldiers consider good duty stations since they are alien to soldiers of my day. I was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO in 1962 for training for about 4-5 months, and then shipped overseas for 18 months before returning to spend my last year of my enlistment at Fort Campbell, KY. I liked Fort Campbell because it was like a small town. Very quiet and peaceful outside of my military duties, but my best duty station was in Ankara Turkey for 18 months. Duty was good there and I wanted to extend for 12 months and be discharged after i returned from there. The guy I replaced did that. I had it approved,, but the new Commander that came in about two months before my 18 months was up vetoed me staying on for another year. His only reason he gave me was he thought American Soldiers should not stay away from home too long in a country like Turkey. I was given the choice of going to Germany for one year or returning to the US. In a weak moment I decided to return to the US. But it worked out.
