Well, look, I’ve never heard of this guy before and I’ve never seen anything he’s been in. So, I don’t have a dog in this fight.
But, I think, collectively, that we would all be pretty upset if they hired Chris Pine to star in a biopic about Martin Luther King, Jr. when he’s not Black. I know the Black community would lose its mind. And, there’s a mini-series called “Shardlake” that’s just out on Hulu that’s been adapted from a series of books. In the books, the main character is disabled and they actually got an actor with a similar disability to play Shardlake. Sure, they could have used a non-disabled actor and used prosthetics and CGI but I think it was nice that they used a differently-abled person.
So, let’s not act as if the viewing public doesn’t have boundaries we think actors shouldn’t cross when it comes to who should portray what on screen. Chris Pine might have the acting chops to play a great MLK - as long as you close your eyes. The second you open them, the illusion is shattered because he obviously doesn’t look the part.
So, what’s the difference between that and orientation? I mean, I definitely see what the differences are but maybe some gay people and others genuinely feel like that should be a boundary, too.
In the end, I don’t particularly agree with the people who are complaining about this guy playing gay characters but I think they have the right to be part of the conversation.

The issue isn't straight men playing gay roles its that those roles are being taken from queer people that aren't being given the same opportunity to play any other role that isn't LGBTQIA focused. That is where the problem lies. Gay people are pigeonholed into gay roles and then straight people are taking them. It is a problem of privilege (one that Darren Criss acknowledges) which makes sense for him not to take those roles anymore.
In a perfect world where true equality existed - yes, it would be a case of "come on, it's called acting", but we don't live in that world.

The reason why straight actors playing gay roles is controversial is because gay actors are usually rejected for EVEN CONSIDERATION for straight roles. Many gay actors have been outright rejected for straight roles simply for being gay.
By that logic, gay men should be most fit for gay roles. Instead, so many gay roles(prestigious ones at that) end up going to straight actors.
There is unevenness is how roles are being doled out to gay actors.

    • @joanwilder799

@@jbak87 Having a background in theater. I would say to you that that is not always the case. Gay actors are not always refused for straight rolls as there are a lot people within the LGBTQIA+ community playing straight rolls. And if we begin to put constraints like his on casting it will actually begin to take us backwards.
We would could then say that Americans can’t play Britts and Britts can’t play Americans, even though almost every major Oscar winning American role has been played by a British actors recently. We go back to people of color not being cast for rolls that don’t specify race. All of these come into question. But, I stand on it is still called acting, which means you have to be able to convincingly portray someone outside of yourself. When I look at the role that Darren Criss played as Andrew Cunanan there was so much more to that than the fact that the man was gay. One he looked so much like him, it was very creepy. In addition to that he was able to bring forth just the mental psyche of a well-known killer and play that role undeniably convincingly to the point that I’m not sure who else would’ve been able to play it gay or straight.

So gay actors have no choice but to fight over the few roles available or try to act straight so they can get straight roles (which is extremely hard if you're publicly gay) whereas straight men can come in and take some of those few gay roles without any issues, especially if they're attractive.

It is one thing to be a member of a group that feels unseen and have to act as someone different, but it is something entirely different to be a member of the “in crowd” as it were, acting as a member of that unseen group. It gives little real representation of that group but is instead an outsiders interpretation of them.
