Im just like you, ive purchased a z4 m40i at a car expo recently on a whim. Went there thinking i was just gonna look around this years line of cars of many car brands with no intention to buy anything. Itll be delivered end of this month, but im constantly thinking if i made the right choice.. but all the reviews online have all been positive about this car so thats a relieve.. im excited for it

I own a Z4 M40i. This car is so underrated. There are so many positive reviews out recently for the LCI model, despite the fact it is almost identical to the previous version. I think people need to try one and understand it as an ownership proposition rather than a track toy. It is fast, fun, and fabulously good looking. But the boot is good, it is fine around town, you can park it easily, but if you want drama it can deliver that too. It is an all round great roadster. I love mine !
@@chuckcribbs3398 Lifecycle Impulse, basically a refresh of the car. So the 2024 model received an LCI update which was pretty much limited to some cosmetic changes to the front bumper. Some LCI updates can be more substantial but I guess the Z4 is such a low volume car they don't really invest in it. It's pretty spot on anyway 🙂
@@ecarnomics Mine has been very reliable so far. Reading various Z4 G29 forums doesn't show up any major recuring issues. The drive train itself is super-reliable and in many different BMW models. As for maintenance it has been quite reasonable. In UK prices a minor service is £250, a major one £550. Tyres are £250-£270 each. I had a new battery for £340. Annual comprehensive warranty is under £400, and should the worst happen a complete hood replacement including parts and labour is £3000.
My parents own a Z4 M40i (as a 2020 model year car), very nice “gt like” roadster. Used it for a holiday to Austria a couple of years ago, great car for this purpose. Compared to my 991.2 the suspension setup is a little to comfortable but this car is very underrated in my opinion. Value for money in this category!
8:20 the car is likely quieter than before because in 2022 the 2nd stage of EU noise regs were introduced. There's another step coming in 2026. I own a pre-2022 model and even that one sounded very muffled and sad. This car just _begs_ to have its OPF removed, it sounds incredible without it. Best upgrade I've ever done.
Correct... I immediately noticed this M40i is more quiet. I have an OPF delete on my z4 g29 30i... sound improved but also some drone on low rpm. Probably because the resonator is also removed.
@@Geneticx77 well pointed out, I noticed the exact same thing. There's a drone at 1900RPM which is noticeable under decent throttle. Thankfully the car doesn't really hang around that rev number in comfort mode, so it's not really a bother as far as I'm concerned. I believe the OPF itself acted as a resonator of sort as I didn't see any actual resonator inside the pipe, just the white filter. Regardless, it was a great upgrade in my opinion. Wish I'd have done it sooner. I'm assuming you feel the same.
First I fitted a 200 cell sports cat then I removed the OPF on my 2019 M40i. It was simply too loud so I had a straight through resonator made and fitted. Next mod was a remote valve controller which made me realise that the valves were almost always open so maybe the OPF bypass would have been ok. I now have a Remus quad tip exhaust and it’s even better. I’m still experimenting as to the perfect sound so i will try a decat.
serious question for all z4 drivers!! How much space does the front passenger have if the seat is pushed all the way back to the stop? I booked the z4 m40 for my wedding and hope that my bride and her dress will fit in... if necessary, I'll strap her to the roof😜
@@ed.83997 my wife had no issue fitting in with her wedding dress and the chair wasn't all the way back. The passenger chair also goes ridiculously low in case she's abnormally tall (much more than the driver seat for some reason). So unless her dress is huge I don't think you'll have any issues, it's a well-sized roadster much bigger than the Miata. Oh, and happy marriage!

I own a 2022 M40i and it definitely needs some kind of flip-up spoiler on top of the windshield when the roof is down. Too much wind and wind noise inside the car above ~100km/h. I also swapped the wind deflector in the back with a glass one so you can actually see something at night.
You guys should ask Manhart if you can drive their Z4 M40i.. Shmee drove it.. the exhaust noise on that example is epic!!! I love mine, its a fabulous car, and turns heads everywhere it goes. Plenty of untapped ponies in the B58, they just need releasing. 👌
Because most people are boring.. They go for the "safe" sedan/coupe or practical comfort SUV option.. Same reason why most cars have boring colours like white/black/gray..
Because 2 seater, convertible, expensive (for a 340hp 2 seater as convertible). i mean a g80 is a complete other car and is perfectly able to do daily stuff.
I love my 2020 Z4M40i so much, that I'm picking up new LCI model next month. I'm slightly disappointed that they didn't increased the power. BTW, red calipers in UK are available only on manual models.

I owned a s30i and now a M40i, it's a very underrated car. Unfortunately, that's the type of car that's bound to disappear, i don't think BMW will keep making Z4s after that model. We should enjoy those while we can (especially in Europe).
Did you forget to change transmission to SPORTS PLUS for the launch, instead of SPORTS mode? I drive a m40i in the UK and mostly drive in SPORTS PLUS with the roof down for the thrill of it :)
Very cool car and quite beautiful as well. I think with an OPF delete there should be a great sound hidden under there, since the B58 can sound quite appealing if it's let loose. Beautiful colour, too. Reminds me a bit (just a bit) of the iconic midnight purple which came on the Skyline GT-R, though that is a pearlescent paint. With the short wheelbase and low center of gravity, this should make for a very fun ride. I had a real difficult time deciding between this and an M340i (previous generations) but practicality made me choose the M340i. Still regret that a bit every time I see one Damn those left-lane hoggers though, ugh, I hope they step on a lego (yes, I am evil). They're everywhere these past few years and it's getting worse and worse. So much so that on certain stretches of highway you're now a rare exception (and someone I enthusiastically salute) if you do try to keep right as much as is reasonable. The person behind you will usually also immediately stomp on the gas and close the gap if you go to the right, in stead of leaving you space to get into the left lane again if necessary, leaving you stuck and forcing you to brake. No traffic insight, nada, nil, zero
I don't think there is a single Toyota part or technology in this car. Nearly purchased one last summer after 2 years of research and looking, drove several times throughout that time, its a great car, heck, even the 4 cylinder drives great in every real world situation here in the USA. Maybe will have to re-visit my desire for one...

I’m surprised to not hear you mention the tune. I have 465 hp on my x3 m40i and I know you have the same on your m340i. I know Joe Achilles was also in love with a tuned AC Schnitzer Z4 and I was deciding between that and an M850i convertible and just copped the M850i based on your JD performance review. Love your channel. Keep it up! (And don’t be afraid to throw in a little tune advice again from time to time :p)
That's pretty nice! Did you do any supporting mods to get 465HP? Or is it the 374HP version? I notice that a simple stage 1 tune tends to be limited to around 400-420HP on the 340HP model.
Mine is 2018/2019 so with the sport dif but also with OPF. I ordered a stone exhaust downpipe and removed the OPF. I could have done without the DP to be honest. But the OPF removal has been crucial in reducing turbo lag. You can see that the car breaths so much better. I wouldnt be surprised if thats the big issue on this Z4 also@@xIcarus227
I always die a little on the inside when reviewers say a Boxter drives better. Im in the market for either a Boxter or a Z4 and while they may have similar list prices, on the used market the Boxters loses so little value (like all Porsches with an ICE) and therefore cost significantly more money than a used Z4. More money than im willing to spend. For a reasonable 4-5 year old Z4 M40i with roughly 50k km, youd get a 10 year old Boxter with 100k km+

The reasoning behind the 340 HP is really stupid.. Thankfully this is easily solved with a simple tune.. The B58 can easily do well over 400 HP just stage 1..
Also looks better and has a quieter interior with a louder engine. At least that's why I picked it. I wasn't looking for a "driver's car." Always wanted that cruising feel. Boxster definitely better if you want to drive hard.
I extensively tested both and finally went for the Z4. Yes, the Boxster IS (a bit) more fun on sunny days. But it cannot be a daily driver like the Z4 can. I can take it for two weeks to the south of France with the missus and still have space in the boot to bring back some wine. And the Boxtser only has a four-pot (even the S). You need to go up to the GTS to get the 6-cylinder and, boy, is it more expensive to buy AND to drive! So, if I was rich, it would be a M3 for the week and a Boxter GTS for the weekend. But the Z4 is the best blend for my budget. ;)

Too refined for a roadster . I feel it is somehow a roadster 3 series . Porsche 718 , Lotus Emira and Alpine A110 are the fun ones .

Z4 is looking very good. A pity that is not as value stable as Porsche.
I love BMWs and have had many over the past 20 years, but why would you take this over a Boxter?

340 hp is because of the European restriction and fight against the combustion engine.
Unfortunatelly, Z4 won't have a future generation.
